The Empathy Test: Why Nobody Cares About Horse Slaughter

Early last week Congress voted to lift the ban on horse slaughter in the United States. The act has surely sent legions of horse lovers into deep depression. But the message I'm hearing from many advocates in the animal welfare world is that this decision will benefit domestic horses.

As it turns out, the most common destination for U.S. horses deemed ready for slaughter was Mexico, where slaughterhouse regulation is weak. Horses killed in the United States, I'm told, will assuredly be better off than if they'd been killed in Mexico. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), partially in deference to this logic, agrees. And as the matter is now framed, so do I.

Have any of you ever watched a slaughter house video. Animals are traumatized and killed horribly. Cows pigs and horses alike and American slaughter houses are no better then in other countries. They are shot with a bolt gun many don't die. They are hoisted up by their back legs and have their throats cut many still fully alive and in severe distress. I will be at the occupy Obama protest in the nations capital on June 11th as will animal rights activists from all over the US and hope to help close horse slaughter for good. Their are currently 40,000 American mustangs already rounded up by our government awaiting this fate. There are a lot of people that care about horse slaughter. PETA taking this position isn't strange. Out of about 2000 dogs and cats taken into their shelter in Va last year I think 28 made it our alive. They are one of the highest kill organizations in the country. I was working for Ingred Newkirk PETA's president when she co founded the organization. She was kill happy then and seems even worse now. Make the kind choice in this world. GO VEGAN!!!!

You cannot blame the animal shelters for "killing" cats & dogs. That is solely the fault of the ignorant masses who refuse to have their animals spayed or neutered.Recently I was trying to explain to a man why he needs to get his newly acquired pit bull female fixed and he was like " but do you know how much money I can make off those puppies" and I replied "do you know how many pit bulls, puppies and adults are put to death every month in this country"? He did not "get it" and the whole conversation was like beating my head into a wall.He assumed it was his right to exploit this poor dog for his own gain.Until this mentality is addressed,we will always have the problem of unwanted animals.

Whether they are killed here, or somewhere else like Mexico, the end result will be the same: The horse will be just as dead either way.

To the person that was talking about dogs and cats. I agree whiole heartedly that all pets should be spayed and neutered. Until it becomes law there will always be people breeding animals that are destined for the shelters and yes I know shelters have to eurhanize but 28 placed out of 2000 is a little overwhelming. Joe could do much better then that here. He has emptied the shelter here before.
To the person that said they are just as dead in Mexico you are also right but there is a bill in congress to stop the export of horses to other countries for slaughter.
I mean there is no such thing as Humane Slaughter.
