Annapolis: Today, Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex Mooney called on the Obama Justice Department and Deputy Attorney General Tom Perez to take action to stop minority voter dilution in Maryland's newly passed congressional map. The most populous majority-minority jurisdiction in the state was split into three majority-white congressional districts and District 4, a majority-minority district was removed from the county.
"Montgomery County is a majority-minority county and it's clearly being diluted for partisan political interests, keeping two white congressmen in power and electing a third," Mooney continued. "I would ask Assistant Attorney General Perez what is he going to do about brazen disregard for Voting Rights Act provisions in his own home county?"
"The Maryland Republican Party was the first in Maryland to call for a second majority-minority congressional district back in the early 1990's. Once again, we're leading the charge for fundamental fairness and compliance with the Voting Rights Act," said Mooney. "It's time that the Justice Department to enforce the laws fairly and equitably without partisan bias."
