GEORGETOWN — Georgetown police are investigating an alleged altercation between Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips and Sussex Sheriff Jeff Christopher.
At 5 p.m. Oct. 26, Christopher filed a complaint against Phillips with Georgetown police. Georgetown Chief William Topping said the two were attending a meeting set up by a third party at Sussex County GOP headquarters in downtown Georgetown to discuss issues between the council and the Sheriff’s Office.

I guess "sensitive nature" means "there's gonna be a coverup"?
Why is this matter anymore sensitive because of the people involved.
IF there was a crime committed, it shouldn't matter WHO it was!
I see this as no more than the Sheriff doesn't like Vance Phillips and Vance Phillips doesn't like the Sheriff. Plain and simple. WELL known FACT.
Vance has gotten too big for his britches and has tried to squash the Sheriff's dept. for YEARS.
Also, does this have something to do with elections?

STATEMENT BY SHERIFF CHRISTOPHER:
Greetings,
My name is Jeff Christopher, your Sussex County Sheriff. Yesterday, October
26, at approximately 4:30 PM while attending a meeting in Georgetown, I
became a victim of an unprovoked criminal assault while on duty and in full
uniform. The perpetrator is a sitting member of the Sussex County Council.
My first thoughts were to take the perpetrator into custody as that is the
duty of any Law Enforcement Officer who witnesses or is a victim him/herself
of an assault. However the injury that I had sustained to my left eye and
groin prevented me from carrying out any further response to the matter at
that time. A short time later, I contacted the Georgetown Police Department
to report the incident. After the occurrence, one of the witnesses to the
event called and checked on my condition and congratulated me on using what
he called “extreme constraint” in this matter. I felt that discretion of
constraint was the better avenue to take. I want the people to know that I
have full trust and confidence that a proper and just investigation will be
conducted and that the appropriate outcome will prevail. As you know, I am a
strong proponent of anti-crime measures and I feel that crime must not be
tolerated to any degree. This, in order, to ensure a safer community for
everyone. The people deserve a Sheriff who will not tolerate any crime
,especially violent crime and I will continue to do all I can to prevent
crime in our community.

It's nice to hear the Sheriff's side of the story. Thank you for posting. Now, where's Vance Phillips' side? He probably won't give one, hoping it just goes away.
The Sussex County Council made our Sheriff's department powerless a long time ago.
With increasing crime, I would prefer to have the Sheriff's office have policing powers. They are needed. Especially in Western Sussex County!
If they're only going to be "paper servers" then what's the point of having a Sheriff's Dept. at all?
