Grappling with a brutal economic climate, more than 200 of the nation's mayors have descended upon Washington to urge President Obama to help cities out of the fiscal morass they find themselves in as state and federal aid dries up.
Several mayors, attending the annual National Conference of Mayors, met behind closed doors with the president and Vice President Biden on Thursday afternoon. Job creation is high on the agenda as the local executives push the administration to help find work in America's cities and townships, where 85 percent of the nation's population resides.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the group had a "great meeting" in which the president said he would focus on economic development and "the need for the federal government to partner with cities."
"What was clear to me, this is a president who is focused on our cities," Villaraigosa said after the meeting.
More than one-third of the nation's 363 metro areas are expected to have unemployment rates higher than 10 percent at the end of 2011, according to a report released by the conference and Global Insight.

Our nation's next welfare class. Rubbish, I say, if they cannot maintain their cities, let them rot and fall into decline. Pity the inhabitants? No, they elected irresponsible leaders to run their cities into the ground, probably on pipe dream promise platforms!
It's time we put the word "responsibility" back into the everyday citizen's vocabulary.
You bet Smitty, Exactly like Ocen City now faced with declining income and budget shortfalls. the council tried to cut some waste with employees, nope mayor says no, empoyees go clap clap. I'd like to hear about the ones that will still be clapping next year, that have been laid off at home, wondering what happened to their jobs. If your a big government body, city or federal, and you don't cut back and economize your resources, your going to get what you deserve. This economy is still going down, not up. The liberal Obama media is putting a positive spin on everything hoping suckers will buy it. Not me! As of Jan 1, 2011 your Obama people changed the way unemployment stats are calculated, (a much longer period then ever before) to bring down the numbers of unemployed for suckers to believe.
