Greensboro, N.C. – The Greensboro Grasshoppers plated five runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 12-7 to level the series at one game apiece. The Shorebirds recorded double digit hits in a losing effort for the fifth time in six games.
The Grasshoppers raced to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Delmarva responded in the top of the third. After a Steve Bumbry leadoff single, Justin Dalles belted his second home of the season to pull the Shorebirds within a run. Garabez Rosa, who went 3-for-4, followed with a double to right center field. Two batters later, Mike Mooney hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Rosa.
The Grasshoppers regained the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Chase Austin that scored Chad Cregar, who reached on an error.
The ‘Birds grabbed the lead away from Greensboro in the fourth. Tyler Kolodny set the table with a double. Then, Brian Conley singled Kolodny to third and he scored on a wide threw to second by the first baseman Cregar. A wild pitch advanced Conley to third and he scored on a ground out by Mikey Planeta.
The Grasshoppers took control of the game in the sixth. Ten batters came to plate and five runs came across to score. The big blow in the frame was a three-run homer by Kyle Jensen.
The highlight of the night for Delmarva was relief pitcher Randy Henry, who struck out the side in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Delmarva Shorebirds suit back up for game three on Wednesday morning at 10:45 AM. RHP Jake Cowan makes his second start of the season.
