WHAT IT IS THAT DIVIDES US

Is it being politically correct to hyphenate who we are? We are, Italian-Americans, Afro-Americans, Irish-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Jewish-Americans and on and on. My belief is that if you need to be hyphenated your living in the wrong country. In this country we are Americans. Does anyone remember the 442nd regimental combat team? They fought and died to be called Americans.*

Labels divide us as Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives or Independents. Again, are we not just Americans? Do we not still believe this country is the "Great Melting Pot" into which we arrived to be formed into Americans? I am as guilty as the next fellow for falling into this trap. I don't know how it started, but I do know it must end. It wont end By Political Party, Presidential or Congressional action. The media is too fond of labels to put a stop to using them. It is, therefore, up to each and every one of us to stand proudly and proclaim, I am an American and not a hyphen. We might then start working for the common good.

* for those too young to know, the 442nd were American soldiers whose ancestors immigrated from Japan prior to WW II.

So we are not allowed to be proud of our heritage anymore?????? What separates us is what once united us, our differences. Somewhere along the line we became intolerant of how others act or what they belive in. All you need to do is look at the long, boorish post titled something like A new Preamble to the Constitution to understand that there are people who just can't tolerate anyone thats not EXACTLY LIKE THEM. Sad, really. But, if you think dropping the hyphen will correct that, you are polluted. Without the hyphen those non-tolerant individuals would just go to the next best things---skin color, language, religious beliefs. Oh they do that anyway, Sorry

"the media is too fond of labels . . ."

Exactly the point. Those who control the media are programming us. It is simple mind control. They tell us what we care about. They give us the choices and then we choose.

The owners of the media are the same people who own the largest corporations in America. This isn't capitalism. Under capitalism the government has a job of preventing monopolies. Our government use to do its job. Many of us remember when they busted up the telephone company.

My ex- wife insisted on hyphenating her last name with mine after. To me, it seemed like a lack of commitment. 11.5 years and 4 kids later, she walked out the door and hasn't paid a cent since.

A__hole Bi76h. Guess she never did intend to stick it out.

I have one last name, and I am an American. Period. No more hyphens for me; not even yours.
