Dear Mayor Ireton: If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Something needs to be done about the residential trash on the Downtown Plaza.
I know Mr. Comegys and Mike Dunn discussed this years ago and assured everyone they would do something about it, nothing was done. I know Mr. Comegys said he'd make it a priority in the Urban Salisbury Forum while he ran for Mayor, yet nothing has been done and the problem hasn't even come up on the Council Agenda.
It's time to look at some of the simple solutions to the Downtown Plaza problems and it starts right here. "You Can't Fix Something You're Not Aware Of." Well, now you're aware of it and I'd ask that you and the City Council take this matter seriously.

Just so you know:
The people who rent the apartments in those buildings pay hefty prices for trash and water (mostly to SVN) and put their trash in dumpsters behind the buildings.
The residiential trash you see comes from the people who own the expensive lofts in the area of Kanpai. Rather than pay for a trash service, they bring their home trash and dump it in the cans there.
I used to live in one of the apartments across from one of the SVN honchos there on the plaza, and saw him and his buddies bringing their home trash out and putting it in those trash cans all the time.
The city shouldn't HAVE to remove the personal garbage from those apartments at no charge.
Do a little investigating, Albero, figure out where its actually coming from, and make them pay for trash service. It's really not fair to be pissed at the city - more than once where residents waited for the trucks to come trough and empty them, and then came down with two or three big bags and filled them again.
perhaps the city could supply a dumpster in a central location and or assess residents a monthly rate for this dumpster as they do for parking
All you have to do Joe is find a letter in there, post their name up here, and I bet they will find another place to dump.
10:24, I was going to make a similar post. It's residential garbage, not hot dog wrappers and soda cups. Let's find out where it's coming from!
Or remove trash cans from the plaza altogether? Put them on the ends of the street maybe?
I live in the City and pay for trash pick-up; however, my trash pick only comes on Friday. If Friday is a federal holiday guess what? My trash doesn't get picked up! In addition, there have been several weeks over the past 6 months that they simply did not come to pick up the trash (this week included). So now instead of having just a trash can in front of my house, I will have an overflowing trash can with 2 weeks of garbage in it sitting in front of my house making my neighborhood look like, well, GARBAGE!!
Just another Salisbury Resident and Tax payer getting ripped off AGAIN!
HAHA!! Word verification: emptying
That's something they don't do-emptying my garbage!!!
joe thank you for pointing out this issue. it seems to be a theme of wanting the plaza to look good which it did thanks to the work done before the festival but the extra step of not having overflowing trash and possibly some sort of sweeping machine to clean out the litter in the river around river walk would be a positive sign also
I recall this as being one of Comegys' campaign issues. It looks like everything he spouted was just what it sounded like.
Lets rumage throught the garbage and steal some identities.
I'm sorry guys, threw a crazy party. I filled my dumpster up with coors light bottles. I had to dump the rest in the trash cans on the plaza.
I thought this is what I paid taxes for. Sorry.
Don't put large drum trash cans on the plaza... use trash cans with a small opening. Problem partially solved!
