Chris Truitt, the President of the local IAFF, on audio, stating the classes are free. He and Steve Mizzel both state the training is done free of charge. Both men maintain the fact the more people trained in the community the better it is for the community. I agree wholeheartedly.
Did anyone know the Salisbury Fire Dept offered free CPR classes? I knew they held classes but had no idea they were free. I was told by others that had taken the class they were charged $48.00 and they wrote their checks out to the instructor. Have any of you taken the CPR course at the Salisbury Fire Department? Were you charged for the course? If you did take the course and did pay by check to verify it, you should take your cancelled check down to the Fire Department and demand to be reimbursed. You could also send a copy of your check to Joe for posting, if you get the run around. Of course we would expect you to black out your name, signature and account number for the sake of anonymity.

Joe, Chris stated "I believe they are free." However being a CPR instructor. The classes can not be done free. There are costs associated with books,CD's and cards. However, I do believe that this week, the SFD is offering 2 free classes in recognition of EMS week. I believe you need to call and pre register for these free classes this week as there is limited space.
I think the Parsonsburg Fire Department will hold free AHA first aid/CPR classes if you will make a donation to the Parsonsburg Fire Department building fund.

Instructors can make a killing, even though they are "supposedly" volunteering. Look into it...
I think that Mr. Truitt answered the question truthfuly since there are free classes this week. What you really want to know is whether someone else (who Truitt and Mizelle may not even know about)is teaching classes on city time at various locations and being paid by both the city and the people who are taking the calss.

What I heard on that audio clip was they both said they have classes at times other than during EMS week and they are free. If they are free why is Tony Sterling charging $48 per person when he teaches a class?
3:20. How about an 8th grade grammar review on Caps. "Only the first word in a sentence". If someone gives you eight hours of their time for almost nothing its free. I bet you don't tip when you eat out do you?

I take classes from Anthony Webster at the Salisbury Fire Department all the time and write the check to him. Isn't that what I was supposed to do?
There is no lie here. The fire dept. does hold free cpr classes for the public on occassion. They are not however AHA/healthcare provider classes. AHA classes do cost money to take if you need it for your job. AHA classes are much more indepth for the medical professional. The classes provided by the FD are to allow the general public the chance to learn how they can help save a life. If perfusion to the body is maintained by propper compressions, this will make the patient have a better chance for survival. This is a free service being offered by the FD to its citizens. I think Truitt is an honest person and so is Mizell. I hold them both in high regards. They are not trying to pull the wool over the sheeps eyes. If people have paid for the class, then as I stated it is an AHA class that is required for Healthcare professionals. Most employers in the medical field pay for their workforce to be trained. I appologize for writing a book, but I felt that someone should do some explaining. Tony is an AHA instructor and does charge for the classes he provides, when off duty to the non-SFD personel.
When I used to work there Jerry Bennett cornered the market on teaching CPR classes while on the clock and making a lot of money doing it.
Tony Webster has been teaching CPR classes and and getting paid for them while on city time ever since he has been in charge of training. This is nothing new and it is good PR for the Salisbury Fire Department and the City. This was made at the decision of the Fire Chief and the now acting fire chief. The few dollars he makes as a CPR instructor is well worth the good relationship they have with the community. Who cares if he makes a couple of dollars teaching CPR. Do you think he is the only one doing it.
