Another Black Eye for Maryland Motorist

On June 30, 2009 Marylanders will soon be in for yet another surprise. Speed trap cameras.

Where was the UAW union - United Parcel Workers . . . .where was FedEx, the Postal Service, Independent truckers, and other Maryland Motorist when these laws were crafted.

Well guess folks, Maryland has made National news yet again. You see we are now ranked near the top for being one of the most unpopular motoring States in the Union according to the National Motorist Association.

On the bright side of their latest legislative motoring effort, we now have some of the best Politicians that money can buy. Literally!!!

Have an nice memorial day weekend.

Maryland is "unpopular" only to the drivers who think the laws and rules of the road apply to everyone but them. I've been driving on Maryland roads for 39 years and have never received a ticket. People that speed, follow too closely, run stop signs and red lights etc. know they're doing so, they do simply hoping they don't get caught. If drivers simply did the right thing, it wouldn't matter how many cops were on the street or how many motor vehicle laws there were. Laws only become a problem for an individual when they break them.

Speed trap cameras are a good thing. Put them near schools and at dangerous intersections.

How about two at the US50/US13 intersection. That's a lot cheaper than building new ramps. In fact, that will be fresh money coming into the county...

OMG are you people willing to give up every human right for the illusion of safety? You're takling about covering the country in surveillance cameras and machines that hand out fines!!

If you don't see the danger you are creating you are blind. Remember that governments always get bigger. Think about it.

Question who is monitoring these cameras and where is the base monitor? I asked this because I would like to know if they are monitored by a private company or by a Maryland Certified Police Officer. This is very important considering the only people who give you a ticket / citation has to observe your wrong doing and be a Maryland Certified Police Officer. Someone at a company that does not meet these standards cannot issue your ticket / citation or accuse you of such by passing on the information they observed on camera to the appropriate Police agency so they can issue you a ticket / citation. If private industry can do this then I can write tickets / citations and they would be legal. I could not be prosecuted for impersonating a Police Officer either because this creates grounds for me not being charged or illegally charged. Correct me if I am wrong about who is able to issue the Ticket / citation legally and if they have to see you when you violate the traffic law. Cameras can be manipulated, since they are computerized. Easy way to meet quotas by manipulation. I have no problem with them if these are tactics are done with in the law and not by manipulating the law for greed.

2:28 The camera activates when a car exceeding the posted speed limit by 12 mph or more passes through it. Don't want your vehicle's picture taken, don't go 12 mph or more over the speed limit.

I can see the dangers of not doing it. What honest danger do you see, other than the need to mend your ways?

you fools. it doesnt matter who is monitoring the cameras. What if the NAZIS were monitoring the cameras? Would it be OK just because they are government and not "private"? NOOOOOOOOOOO. You can't have cameras all over the public space. The government doesn't own you, and they don't have the right to watch you. Honestly if you can't see the rights you are giving up you deserve to lose them. But I don't, so please try to see that cameras all over the place are very dangerous.

Now compare the "unpopularity" rating to the amount of traffic deaths, please. Maybe we'd rather be unpopular but alive.

You have the right to confront hostile witnesses against you in court, the right against self-incrimination, and the right to due process.

These cameras eliminate all those rights.

Wait until O'Malley's slot machines fail to fill the state's coffers. Then you'll see these things everywhere and they'll be set to go off if you're 0.0001 mile over the limit.

I agree with 11:58. If you receive one of these tickets in the mail, you are guilty, period. You have not rights whatsoever. Also, asking where were all the groups when this legislation was passed, as if the state legistlature cares about what the public thinks, is ridiculous! Look at the recent toll increase for commercial vehicles and commuters. That was rallied agaist by LOTS of the organizations, without success. No one is listening, no one cares... welcome to Maryland, the "Free State."
