I wonder how drunk Ruark was??? Perdue did not seem to talk to him,, He was too busy on his cell phone. Politt looked like he was thinking about hitting up KFC,,, Dull just there for the face time! But JOE?? My Man was right there! Congrats To Fernando & Joe!
I watched on tv. While I am not a boxing fan by any means I cant help but think that between ESPN's coverage and commentary and the obvious enthusiasm of the home crowd there is no better time then NOW to work on a new civic center. What a great thing for this town that seriously could use a boost. Congrats Fernando!
Joe had a better seat than Ruark, Perdue and Pollitt.
While I am not a big boxing fan either I did watch on ESPN. The annoncers said the fans were there to see Fernando, home town hero, and not the main event. They gave props pretty much all night to the fans and area for their support.
One thing I found funny was a fan standing up and waiving while on his cell phone instead of paying attention to the bout. I can only imagine he was talking to his wife who was probably telling him "I see you on TV!!" He looked like a fool.
Glad to see he won. Lost the 1st round but pretty much coasted the rest of the way. Wish it would have been a KO. Lets hope Salisbury gets more venues in the future.

I think we should all thank Fernando for bringing Showtime and now ESPN to our little spot on the map. They would have never considered this area for anything if not for Fernando. He might also be the catalyst needed to get the Civic Center revamped when the economy springs back.

about the civic center upgrade..so correct! there needs to be a TRUE arena...and it needs to be across the street! perfect place and size and parking...
take it from someone that goes to many arenas across the country on a daily basis pretty much...this town could do big things with a new arena/civic center...big big things!
Well what they need to do is make his fight last bc everyone just leaves after his bout.
I thought after last time they would understand that and make him last but i guess not.
How rude though, just walking out in the middle of the title main event fight.

A great fight ! Fernando, you are a hometown hero and have made us all proud of you. Just one piece of friendly advice for future fights--don't do the " hands-behind-the-back" taunting again. One, you are too classy a guy to try to embarrass your opponent that way and Two, it could cost you a fight if your opponent should throw a lucky punch and deck you. I wish you much continued success both in the ring and in life.
I did get up over half way through the title fight but I wanted to see Fernando in the lobby after the fight and have him sign my ticket. What a line, I got it though and bought a hat with his autograph.
Fernando is our hometown hero however ESPN is a nation wide boxing promoter and a title fight will always be the main event.
Let's hope Fernando bring's a belt home here to Salisbury, then he will BE the main event and everyone will be there until the last second and then some.

And with ALi being Fernando's "hero" I think the taunting may be a tribute thing. I loved it my wife got pissy about it.
Man how about Gabes FACE! WoW he got busted up Fernando didn't have a single bump. And he left mid bout to sign autographs for his fans. he did not leave the building.
Props to Gabe he fought tough but Fernando has POWER and by the 3rd round Gabe KNEW THIS!

FERNANDO you did a great job! You made all of us so proud of you last night and you also put your town on the map with both coverages (SHOW & ESPN).
Anyone know what the deal was with Pollitt wearing his arm in a sling? Think him and Ruark got into it over who had the best seat? Perdue looked like he was in a daze. Not sure if he knew where he was or why he was here. Those fools sitting on the other end of that aisle were only there to play with the cameras. All the one in the white suit did was stand up when he knew no one block the camera's view while the one next to him was calling everyone he knew to make sure they were both sceen.
I was in the 3rd row and MOST of the crowd stayed to watch the co-main event, not like the first time. It went the full 12 rounds and was a slug fest.
I talked to Fernando's trainer and he told us that Rosado's trainer just got done training Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosely. The kid was a strong opponent and well prepared. Way to go Fernando and way to go Salisbury. Great night all around.

i am scratching my head over the scoring of the third round....??? 10-10???? wasn't there a knockdown in that round??? oh,well... that's boxing for you.....
Ok, Joe, here is a chance for you to be a real reporter. YOu know how the Wall STreet Journal every now and then will write an article that is like "here's everything you need to know about the subprime mess" or how the NEw York Times will have a piece in their "week in review" section on Sunday that takes a complicated subject and brings us up to speed on it?
Ok, well, then here is your project. If you do this, it will show that you are a real journalist.
Teach us about boxing. No, i'm serious. I know how to go to a baseball game and score a game, but I know absolutely NOTHING about boxing. It's one thing to sit and cheer, but I don't understand the weight classes, the scoring, why some bouts are certain numbers of rounds, etc.
Between now and the time of the next fight, teach Salisbury about boxing. Not more about Fernando, but about the sport itself. Maybe then we'll understand enough to appreciate these other fights for the sport or the talent of the fighters. I, too, think it is embarassing that a lot of people leave after Fernando, but if we don't learn more about the sport, that's going to keep happening.
Scoring is different in every state. Most are a 10 point must for the winner of a round unless the ref takes points away.
That means the winner of the round gets 10 points, the opponent is scored accordingly to his performance in that particular round. Say the opponent is hanging in there tough the score might be 10-9, 10-8. A clear winning round may be scored 10-7, 10-6 or less.
Some states have a standing eight count after a good whomping but not knocked out, others don't have a standing eight count. Depends on where the fight is.

.01 Weights and Classes.
A. The Commission recognizes the following weights and classes:
> (1) Flyweight --------------------- 112 pounds or less;
(2) Bantamweight -------------- over 112 to 118 pounds;
(3) Featherweight ------------- over 118 to 126 pounds;
(4) Junior lightweight -------- over 126 to 130 pounds;
(5) Lightweight --------------- over 130 to 135 pounds;
(6) Junior welterweight ------- over 135 to 140 pounds;
(7) Welterweight -------------- over 140 to 147 pounds;
(8) Junior middleweight ------- over 147 to 154 pounds;
(9) Middleweight -------------- over 154 to 160 pounds;
(10) Junior light heavyweight - over 160 to 168 pounds;
(11) Light heavyweight -------- over 168 to 175 pounds;
(12) Cruiserweight ------------ over 175 to 190 pounds;
(13) Heavyweight ------------------------- over 190 pounds.

.13 Judging and Scoring.
A. Judges shall score all contests and determine the winner through the use of the "ten-point must system".
B. The "ten-point must system" shall be applied as follows:
(1) The winner of each round receives ten points and the opponent a proportionately less number;
(2) If a round is even, each boxer shall receive ten points; and
(3) Fractions of points may not be awarded.
C. The awarding of a round or the match shall be based on the following factors to be scored in the order listed:
(1) Knockdown;
(2) Clean hits;
(3) Effective aggressiveness;
(4) Defense;
(5) Ring generalship; and
(6) Other relevant considerations.
D. In addition to the factors in § C, a boxer may be given credit for the following:
(1) Sportsmanlike actions in the ring;
(2) Close adherence to the spirit as well as the letter of the regulations; and
(3) Refraining from taking technical advantage of situations unfair to an opponent.
E. Deductions of points may result from the following:
(1) Persistent delays of a boxer by clinching; and
(2) Lack of aggressiveness.
F. The following guidelines shall govern the awarding of points and the decision:
(1) Each knockdown shall have a value of one point;
(2) Points for each round shall be awarded immediately after the termination of the round;
(3) Each judge shall:
(a) Award the decision to the boxer who has the highest point total at the end of the contest, and
(b) Write the decision on the scorecard;
(4) The announcer shall collect the scorecards from the judges and deliver the scorecards to the Commission's representative for review;
(5) The Commission's representative shall advise the announcer of the decision who shall, in turn, announce the decision to the audience;
(6) A boxer receiving the decision from a majority of the judges shall be declared the winner of the contest; and
(7) If neither boxer is granted the decision by a majority of the judges, the contest shall be declared to be a draw.
