ESPN Friday Night Fights play-by-play man Joe Tessitore and color man Teddy Atlas post-fight discussion.
TESSITORE: The guy I wanna ask you about is now is the 22-year-old Fernando Guerrero. Everybody loves to see the hot prospect, who’s exciting, who’s an action fighter on the way up. Tell me what you thought of Guerrero.
ATLAS: I think he needs more development, but this was a step in the right direction. I mean, he was 12-0 with 11 knockouts coming into this fight. He hadn’t really been tested and tonight he got tested. He got put on the floor, he showed his character. He came back, he dominated the fight. He showed a pretty good set of skills, you know, he was pretty versatile. He was able to put punches together. He comes at you in a fashion where people like to watch a guy like that.
He’s got a great venue here. I’d like to see this venue, you know, develop more. I’d like to see more fights in places where you’re not in a, you know, a vacuum –
TESSITORE: Like a casino.
ATLAS: Yeah, you’re not in a casino. You’re in a place where there’s real, live people –
TESSITORE: Local fans coming to see their guy. Yeah.
ATLAS: – with hearts pounding, with enthusiasm, with care, with tension, with all the things that make for a great night. And with Guerrero, those things are there.
I said it last night and I'll say it again. Fernando is the catalyst we need to get money put into the civic center. Fernando has more good for this city in the last year than Barrie Tilghman has done in 12. Go figure.
