HALO Ministry CODE BLUE

I just spoke with Celeste Savage at HALO Ministry. They have an immediate need for blankets and sheets for the homeless shelters they run. They have two shelters, one for women & children and one for men. Tonights temperatures are going down in single digits with a wind chill taking the temperatures into negative numbers. If you have blankets and/or sheets you don't need please take them to HALO Ministry. They are located in the K Mart shopping center at Rt 50 and Tilghman Road.

Give them a call and ask where to drop off donated items. 410-742-9356

Lets get some of that community support for Halo Ministry. We are having dangerously low temperatures tonight into tomorrow.

Christ United Methodist Church just contacted me for a mattress, and I have two. If they don't need both, I will have one left for them. I'll keep up with Joe on this.

What's the best time to drop off things there?

I went to the K-Mart shopping Center and their facility there (something like the Opportunity SHop) was closed. The actual shelter is in teh same building as Harvest Baptist Church. I dropped them off there. What nice folks!

People in this town never cease to amaze me. Whenever anyone makes an attempt at doing something good for others there is always the butt wipe that chimes in with something negative.

Anon729 I hope you have a nice warm bed to sleep in tonight because there are to many in our very own community that don't.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Wal-Mart has some obsolete blankets they could donate to help the less fortunate in our community, just a thought. Im sure they would want to help.

Anonymous said...

I was there this evening to take some blankets. They were serving a hot meal, women and children were sitting at tables eating and playing board games. There was a sense that the community cares. Thank you HALO for providing a much needed place. In 2008 nearly 1,000,000 homes were taken through the foreclosure process. Not everyone who lost their house or their apartment is to blame for what they are going through right now...job loss, medical crisis, predatory lenders, etc. Are there really people out there who would deny a mother and her children a safe and warm place to sleep on a bitter cold night like tonight? Maybe some local businesses would like to step up and provide some sheets, blankets, sleeping bags and such. How about it folks?

Since most retailers are trying to clear out their stock this time of year to avoid inventory taxes, it would be nice to see a larger store like Ollies or Kmart donate some overstock bedding.

While we're on the topic of extremely low temps -- Can anyone tell me why the WCBOE doesn't plan ahead and think about all of the kids who stand in the freezing temps (not to mention rain, etc) and put a delay out for the morning? Why do they insist on waiting until the very last minute? It's ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Harvest Baptist Church were is that? I can drop things off tomorrow as things are not going to improve by then.

Anonymous said...

Yeah lets cancel school because it's cold. Are you serious?

Anonymous said...

Don't let Chief Webster know. He will be by to take the blankets from them so they will leave town.

Anonymous said...

I had the exact same experience as anonymous 6:50 and dropped my blankets off at Harvest Baptist. I didn't see Joe's blog until well into the evening and thought, oh, I'll just wait to donate until tomorrow. Then I thought about how cold it is outside and thought, I can get really cold for a few minutes tonight, so maybe someone else won't be really cold all night long.

Also, as for canceling school because of the cold. Check out the temperatures in Minnesota and Wisconsin right now where schools are closed because of the temps. Then you'll realize, 7 degrees is nothing!

Harvest Baptist is on South Blvd on the East side of Rt. 13 behind Giant. They may prefer the K--Mart location during business hours. Maybe Earls Sister could check and post an update. I saw Campbell there delivering an armload of blankets.

I have a friend in Ill. I was complaining how cold it was here, it was 26 at the time. I stopped real quick when she said it the high for the next day was going to be -4 and yes their schools are closed because of the cold. With temperatures like that it takes minutes for someone to get frost bite.

To Anon 729

I had the pleasure of attending an informational meeting a few days after the homeless shelter for women and children had opened. Ms. Savage was the speaker. She talked openly about her bad business decisions and being at rock bottom w/no place to go but up. She was an awesome messenger for the Lord. It is amazing what one person's vision and trust in God has allowed her to do and how Oak Ridge Baptist Church has helped lead the way. Last year, the women's shelter (and men's too I think) were only open when the temps dropped to 32 or below. This year the women's and children's shelter will be open nightly thru March.I am not sure about the men's. Thanks to her, and volunteers thruout the community and most of all the Lord. It's not just street people in need, there are many folks who are just a paycheck away from being homeless. Anything catastrophic like an illness or accident or job loss can lead you down a road you hoped you would never travel.
She knows her sins as all of us have them, but she has trusted her life to Him and has been forgiven. We all need to learn to do more of that.
P.S. Sorry for the late post-am playing catch up from a long week.

We are gathering up our old blankets and coats to donate. Does anyone know if they take children's clothes & such, as well for the shelter? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

We run an organization, conderned parents for kids, (501C3) we collect used clothing and recycle them to needy children/adults. We keep assorted clothing etc out front 24/7 so peole who need and dont want to go to a shelter to get warm clothing can just get something off the rack. Last nite when it was so cold we hung over 20 coats and hoodies out and this morning there was on childs coat left..we also take coats to our local schools or provide for needy children who we are told about. Everytime I see a child in a warm coat I realize WHY I do this..It makes your heart feel warm. We all need to help each other, not depend on the government to give a handout.

Anonymous said...

Concerned Parents for Kids does a great job of clothing distrituion. I have taken many items, especially coats and children's items there. If they would like to list their contact information it would be a great resource.

I think it would be a great idea if they left town. Many of them are not from this area and they are encouraged to come here because we accept them with open arms.

Celeste Savage and Oak Ridge Baptist Church have done a lot of great things for the homeless community as well as doing great things in many other areas as well. We all should take note of the great things that are going on at Oak Ridge and do our part to help the community.

MS SAVAGE IS A CROOK/SHE TOOK EVERYONES MONEY WHEN SHE HAD THE TRAVEL AGENCY THE CHURCH DOES A GREAT JOB I JUST HOPE THEY ARE WATCHING THEIR MONEY AND I KNOW YOU WON'T POST THIS BUY CHECK OUT HER NAME ON THE COURTS

7:29 PM

I have to agree with the poster. She is listed in the Maryland Judiciar Case Search 10 times.

Goodness, it amazes me how crooks find the Lord after they have been busted. Once a crook always a crook. Sorry, just my opinion and this really makes ORBC look bad.

Anonymous said...

to anonymous 729- what does anything about her past have to do with a request for blankets and sheets for a homeless shelter on perhaps, one of the coldest nights of the year? What kind of pathetic, idiotic, heartless, stupid, cold and uncaring creature are you? Get off your ivory tower tail and help with the needy, rather than sit there and preach about someone elses'past-and totally overlook the big picture here. Pathetic butt wipes such as yourself just mar the landscape.
and how does this make ORBC look bad? Because they forgave a sinner? You obviously know nothing about Christ's forgivness or you wouldn't be making dumb statements like that.

To the folks who wish to post here on this blog and attack Celeste Savage please leave your name in your post. I ask this only that we may be able to openly forgive you. It is quite evident you do not know Celeste or the teaching of the Holy Bible. Celeste is one of the most caring people you will ever meet if it were not for the love and understanding of this woman many people would be spending the night in the frigid cold. You post that court records exist because of her past business dealings and say she is a crook. Take a look in the mirror at yourself and ask do I have the right to throw stones? Seems to me if you had nothing to hide you my friend would have signed your comment with your name instead of anonymous. Keep in mind if you yourself ever find yourself in dire straights with no place to go or get warm Celeste will love you like JESUS!

How about clothing also?In addition to some coats and shoes,I have clothes my daughter has outgrown taking up alot of space in her closet and do not know anyone personally who can use them.I do not want to give them to an org that is going to sell them,I want them to go directly to one who can use them.
And just a side note: you all know how I feel about stealing but if this lady is volunteering her time to help the homeless on a regular (basis),then odds are she is trying to redeem herself by giving of her time and efforts.

Well Im really confused now. There is a homeless shelter right next to Havest Baptist. That is where I took things to. Its not run by Harvest just happens to be next door to them. Is there another one at Oakridge?

9:59 PM

If your friend was so caring she would have paid back all the people she stole from. And on top of them she would never have stolen from them in the first place. I guess if Ray Lewis starts going to church and asks for a blanket or two for the homeless he would be the best christian that ever walked this earth. What gets me is when ever a criminal gets caught stealing they seem to find Jesus and all is supposed to be forgiven.

I can assure you that my name isn't listed in the Judiciary Case Search. I can also assure you that I am a good christian and I attend a real church, a real religion and not some fly by night church or religion in a furniture store or a building supply store.

You people that are "Jesus Freaks" ruin the whole idea behind christianity and that is why many people are losing faith.

Now tell me.... why didn't you sign your name? You don't have to tell me, I already know the answer. LMAO... because your name can be found in the Maryland Judiciary Case Search as well.

Checkmate!

4:36 AM

It is ran by Oakridge Baptist Church and rented through Rinnier. How can a church afford to rent out commercial rental space for the homeless? Someone has way to much money.

Anonymous said...

You people are simply amazing. This post is about helping those in need not about a church or a person. Yet you take the time to turn every thing and every situation into a negative. I don't care if Charles Manson was asking for blankets for the homeless, he's not asking for himself. Everyone gathered around and dumped $12k in a pot to help a sick child yet you raise a stink about used blankets. Is this christianity, at its finest?

To the person that attends a REAL church, Jesus never had a church, his church was where he was at the moment. Like your riches, your building can be gone in the bat of an eye.

To the one stating Rinnier leases space for this shelter. How do you know what the church is paying for rent? Did you ever consider Rinnier might be donating the space during winter months?

You all need prayer and a swift kick in the pants.

I rest my case.

To 9:53am - Checkmate, Oh how shallow we human beings can be. You my friend completely miss the whole point of being a Christian. You yourself said you have religion please do yourself and everyone close to you a favor, Read the book "More Jesus Less Religion" By Stephen Arterburn and Jack Felton. Religion is nothing more than rules and tradition that accomplish nothing. Further more if you are a Christian your comments would not include phrases which you have used in your own post.Yes i did as well post as anonymous JUST LIKE YOU! The reason for doing so is because I have already seen how you have defamed Celeste and yes with enough digging I suppose you could do the same to me. Your comment about where we at Oak Ridge hold WORSHIP services has nothing to do with being God fearing Christians for where two or more are gathered in his name there he is also. Forgiveness is one of the most important parts of being a Christian. You also brought Ray Lewis in on your post and that is a completely different situation not at all related to the subject at hand. The court briefs you mention DO NOT show when a person is working to resolve their past short comings. I ask to put this foolish non productive attitude to rest and come visit Oak Ridge next Sunday. You will be greeted by caring loving Christians with a friendly smile and loved just as Jesus loves. Service times are 8:30,10:00 or 11:30am I hope to see you there.

11:03, lighten up, for crying out loud. I'll bet you a hundred to one that these people are busier than you are and you're paid and they're not. Basing an organization like this is just a joke. CALL THEM BACK till you get an answer. It's not like you drove way out of your way in a snow storm!

Joe,
My wife and I went over yesterday afternoon and delivered two large trash bags of blankets and sheets to them yesterday. We basically emptied our attic and closets of suff we no longer use. Amazing what you have when your searching for it. Anyway, to answer a few of the questions posted on this thread. Yes they will take clothes, shoes etc. for kids and adults alike. As of yesterday the shelter for the women and kids had 38 guest that they are feeding and keeping warm. This doesn't include the shelter they house the men in. What people need to realize its not just "street people" but folks that are down on their luck that cant afford the basics of life for one reason or another. My wife and i are going to start taking over fresh baked goods for the kids. Its tough enough for them not to be able to stay in their own home, we're just trying to make it feel like home. The lady that I met, Ms. Savage, was a very sweet woman who was working her butt off scrubbing pots and pans when I got there. She did ask if I could mention one thing, She wwasn't even sure how to put it. HALO will be getting their first electric bill for the season. She said it would be a doozie because of the amount of heat, cooking , water runnig etc. Can we help as a community? It really does us all good when we forget about focusing on ourselves and help others that are FAR worse off then we are. What do you think Joe? Can you put out the Cry for help for them? The Bible says, when you've done unto the least of these, you've done it unto Me.
