TROOPERS INVESTIGATE DEATH OF MAN AFTER HOME INVASION

(Salisbury, MD) – Maryland State Police and Wicomico Bureau of Investigation detectives are investigating the death of a Wicomico County man who was found unresponsive early this morning minutes after three men entered the home where he was visiting and bound him with duct tape.

The victim is identified as Brookes E. Harmon, 27, of the 1200-block of Flamingo Drive, Salisbury, Md. He was pronounced dead at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center after being transported there from the scene by ambulance early today.

The three suspects are described as African American males. One is said to be about 6 feet tall, weighing between 250 and 300 pounds, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Suspect two is about 6 feet tall, weighing between 200-250 pounds. No further description is available on the third suspect.

The preliminary investigation indicates that before midnight Friday night, Harmon stopped by to visit the residents living in a single-family home in the 600-block of Dennis Street, Salisbury. Those living in the home included two adult females and five children.

Troopers were told that around midnight, three masked men barged through the rear door of the residence and told everyone to get down. The men immediately accosted Harmon and bound him with duct tape. They ordered the others in the home into a back room.

Witnesses told investigators the three men did not display any weapons. They said the men left the home about 20 minutes after they arrived.

After the men left, the residents of the home emerged from the back room and found Harmon unresponsive and not breathing. They called 9-1-1 immediately and Harmon was transported to the hospital.

State Police secured the home and crime scene technicians have processed the location for evidence. Investigators observed no immediate indication of a cause of death on Harmon’s body during a preliminary examination.

Harmon’s body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. Investigators hope to learn more about the cause and manner of Harmon’s death as a result of the autopsy.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact Maryland State Police at 410-749-3101 or Crime Solvers of Wicomico County at 410-548-1776. A cash reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Callers may remain anonymous. The investigation is continuing.

please find out as much of this story as you can. This is a friend of mine i went to high school with.

Joe, from what I heard... a helicopter was requested as this patient was a Category A according to MIEMSS, but they denied aviation. He should have been flown to Shock Trauma for neurological impairment but wasn't. I also heard that the family is extremely upset by this. Just some scuttlebutt from within, if you know what I mean.

If they are caught hang em high !!

This county needs to declare war on violence and drugs. There needs to be a proactive street crimes unit and every department needs to committ to the effort. There is strength in numbers. A basic concept in all battles is superior fire power. That is what is needed here. Time to take the gloves off and become more proactive to the crime in this county. It is tragic that we are where we are today. We are putting a band aid on a gapping wound. Great blog Joe stay on it.

I can assure you, no helicopter was requested. The subject was pulseless when EMS arrived and was transported to PRMC, where he was pronounced deceased.

You clueless individual and I certainly hope that you are not a paramedic. That residence is 2 miles from a local trauma center and some bozo wants to call a helicopter??? If it was denied they did the right thing. If indeed a Salisbury paramedic requested the helicopter then that person needs to be fired.

What I would like to know, according to your comments, is how the family "knew" the patient should have been flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore and they are extremely upset? The residents in the neighborhood are not extremely educated and by no means well versed in Emergency Medical Services and the specialty hospitals in Baltimore. From what I read it sounds as though this wasn't a Trauma patient so your "Category A according to MIEMSS is null and void." Quit stirring sh!t unless you know what you are talking about.

Thanks for this report. The story as written in the Daily Times' online edition is confusing.

Hey Folks, I think it's time to start arming yourself. Since Chiefy and the Mayor think crime is down, you can forget extra police to combat the problem. All I can say is if these three "gentlemen" invade my home, the coroner would need to bring a van big enough to hold three pieces of meat.

To 1:36pm I agree that we need to be proactive , I believe that if
this home had some protection such
as a weapon , they could have saved a life and got rid of 3
African Americans with black hooded shirts and masks. I also
believe that every home will need some fire power in the near future.
If we could shoot 3 of these guys
and the media got hold of it , the
guys with masks and black hoods would think twice before doing
something like that.
I have a pistol on every floor of the house and close to every door or entrance.

make it a county wide jurisdictional unit consisting of 4-6 city officers 4-6 county sheriff's 4-6 state troopers 1-2 fruitland officers, 2-4 delmar police then add supervisors however the heads of the above listed agencies see fit. Give them unmarked crown victoria's or chargers with emergency equipment, uniform would be black tactical pants nylon duty gear, tactical polo shirt with police or sherriff or trooper on back and let them seek and apprehend all criminals focusing on guns drugs and gangs

Or they just stood on his chest until he stopped breathing. Two guys that weigh in the neighborhood of 250 pounds would probably do the trick....and absolutely no formal or professional training. My educated (trained) GUESS is yes this is probably drug related. It seems to be the current theme for home invasions.

Anonymous at 2:19 is just that in the brain, anonymous. The inside informant did not say that his family and/or his associates called for an helicopter. He was not even at his home residence. Since the residents on this side of town are "not educated enough", to know protocall, why would they ask for a helicopter when calling 911? What does the residence have to do with your statement. I bet you your high-profile degree, that on that emergency call, you will not hear a request for a helicopter being made, that was up to the hospital and/or the proper authorities. And by the way, you have business owners, firemen, probation officers, bus drivers, RNs,various other professionals, and blue collared individuals who work hard every day, and who abide by the laws, just like in your neighborhood. And I guess that in your neighborhood there are no drug addicts, adulters, pedophiles, and/or criminals. Just give your area so that I can do case searches and sex offender searches to prove your point. I bet you won't. A large number of residents have post-high school degrees. For future reference do not assume that because someone's address is located on the"west side", that they are not well versed and/or educated enough to function in your society, because when you assume you make an ass of yourself. Your comments could use some proof-reading and grammar correction. You lost validity in your comment when you made that ignorant bias statement.
I remember the victim as a adolescent, I am 5ft 3in and he was more short than I. This was brutal. I agree w/ others above. I am a single mother and I work hard for mine. I'll be damned if some low life, penitentiary bound zombies, black, white, hispanic etc., abuse my children and/or try to take mines. I'd rather be trialed by twelve, than carried by six. Mr. .357 you're right families need to begin to arm theirselves.

I say eight officers total at first for a pilot program. if it suceeds i bet there is grant money out there. I see this Proactive Unit is needed more than we think. SISU works all the Homicides anyway. It does not matter who gets em. The State Police take them over. Hmmmm. Oh well. I still see the need for a Task Force or Crash Unit. There used to be a Vicat Unit. I think the Sheriff's Office and the State could do thier own if the City does not want to get involved, but why would you not want this to happen. I dont think we can waite for an election year. Take the same fight that is being waged on the By-Pass to the streets of Wicomico County. I am sick of thugs and crime. They are domestic terrorist period. If people in thier homes fear going outside in America then Dammit Do Something about it. I know the knowledge is there in all of our community leaders. Step up and make this happen. Fund it however you have to we can not afford not to do this. The other option is to have a county police department and make the forces become one like it or not. If we let this cancer spread you will never stem the flow of violent crime. We are lucky that this county is still at a size that these problems can be addressed if we make the committment. If we dont shame on us. It has to be faught on all levels that includes the wealthy people in this community that deal dope and fund it without being caught. Joe you know it is here. Why do we never hear of the salisbury King Pins getting hit. Just the one on thier way to and from New York and Va. Beach. I guess we all think that all these rich people in afluent neighborhoods are clean. WOW tell me the last time a rich white guy got busted and I will kiss your rump. I guess they are not here or is it more sinister than that ??? Deep but think about. I know a couple of old cops that could tell you the last time. They are still just that old cops. Hmmm I guarantee you they will never be in a position to go after those types again. Do the math. Mike Lewis needs to attack the criminals inside our town. There is plenty to go around. I totally support interdiction. Lets also kick the crap out of the local financers and hands on criminals at our back doors. I have heard the number 30 in ref. to kilograms of cocaine being sold in and around this county per month. It is time to clean up our own streets. Folks it is a war and we are not winning. When it does not include the BIG TIME criminals in our own yard, then we are failing to fight it at a level that will make our streets safer. I still say I support whole heartedly the fight being waged on the highway, but take that same fight to our county roads and city streets. Any politician that does not support the war on crime has to have a reason. One has to make up thier own mind as to why someone would take that type of stance. I hope you are listening City and County Councils get you act together. The Officers in this county are all that lies between you and the criminal element. Make the resources availible to wage a real battle right here. This county could be a model for the rest of the U.S. Unless you have a articulate reason to protect criminals. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

2-3 2 man "jump-out" units. Their schedules and duty assignments should be set by a front line supervisor who answers directly to the Sheriff. Uniformed (fatigues that are well marked) in unmarked cars. The front line supervisor should be directed to meet regularly with the Sheriff, WNTF supervisors and with SPD Crmininal Div. and WBI in order to provide these divisions with information obtained during interviews/interrogations, potential informants, and to gather information which may aid in developing future duty assignments (developing problem areas, etc.).

The supervisor should be a team player who understands the importance of promoting the mindset that their unit is not better than any other division, i.e. road patrol, criminal div., etc. This will go along way in maintaining open channels of communication and promote information sharing with members of road patrol divisions in all jurisdictions.

The effectiveness of this unit should not be measured during the first month or so. As long as the units are making contacts (traffic stops, pedestrian contacts, etc), and the supervisor is meeting with those listed above, results will follow. The supervisor should be held accountable for the overall effectiveness of his division.

The community should expect to see the arrest rate go up before they see the crime rate go down.

Does anyone else see how similar this is with COPP units of the past?

Anonymous said...

Regardless of what was going on in that house, the three perpetrators forced their way in and terrorized the occupants, ultimately killing a defenseless person, certainly traumatizing the others.
However it has to happen, something must change here in SBY. Whether the spd head is a good person or a bad person, his force is clearly not as effective as it should be. The sheriffs dept., consequently, isn't as effective as it needs to be. As a taxpayer in wicomico county I would really prefer my law enforcement dollars be used in the smartest way. I believe a county-wide consolidation makes sense.
At least, with a more effective local police agency we have half a chance at being safe in our own homes.

By the way a nickel bag (I noticed you didn't know how to spell it) is still illegal.

Did anyone really say this druggy needed to die?

Anonymous said...

I think Maryland needs to get off some of the Ravens money and give local police agencies some grant money to hire more officers. It is very difficult for police to be effective when calls coming in are out numbering police on duty. This is not the officers' fault, so don't blame them. They're working their tails off night and day on calls they are assigned; which they HAVE to respond to no matter how insignificant they are; and finding crime in our town. People need to remember crime isn't always visible, and officers are not always visible as well. Just because you don't hear about it or see it, doesn't mean things are not being dealt with. I totally agree that we need more law enforcement out there, but we can only work with what we are given. If we are such avid believers in boosting our supports, we need to appeal to those who are in control. Not once, but repeatedly.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I heard there was a freeze on hiring for State and local agencies. This is very backwards to me. If people are suffering from the economy, wouldn't it be a safe bet that crime is going to go up? So wouldn't the hiring of more officers be a GOOD investment? Judges get paid enough.

I am not defending this mans past or the fact of drugs or not. I do work in law enforcement. What is done, is done. he still leaves behind a greaving family. Keep in mind you are parents and loosing your child would be terrible. A man is dead (fact) another family having to bury a loved one. Have some compassion for those left to pick up the broken pieces.

sounds like the 3 guys were waiting for brookes either someone tipped them that he was going to be there in that area or they were watching the house because they knew that he visites there often?! Regardless of his past he didnt deserve to die..exspecially not like that..its just sicking..anyone of us could be next! Salisbury is turning into Balitmore! I doubt that it he was killed because he smoked weed in his past. Most drug dealers aren't going to take the chance of spending the rest of there lives in jail over weed..unless it was a high quanty of weed..witch i doubt it was.. I could see it being drug related if it was over crack, herion, pills or some other more expensive drug. reguardless of why he was killed..doesnt matter .. the point is was that he was brutely attacked and murdered by some ruthless people. You all should have some respect for this man and his family..they have lost a loved one..I bet if he was a white man and was attacked like this in a nicer neighborhood you all wouldnt be posting his personal records or putting him down. Grow up and have some respect.. Thanks for showing us all how immature people of salisbury are!

We were a few months apart in birth and it's hard for me to realize that I'll never get to talk to him, see him, or do anything with him ever again. It's really messed up how and why this happend to him.

Regarding his past, we've all made mistakes in our lives, whether it was a small mistake or a huge one; however, he did the right thing by changing his ways and not going to jail. He did what he needed to do to become a better person.

That's really messed up to say. I know my cousin would've been a GREAT father. And how do you know that he doesn't know who his father is? FYI, not that you need to know but his father served in the Armed Forces (ARMY) and he knew who his father is thank you very much! People of all races abandon their families; fortunately for Brooks', his father didn't abandon him.

To the men who did this to him, you will get yours one day. It may not be today, tomorrow, this week, year, or in the next ten years, but your time will come. Karma has a way of coming back and your time will hit you when you least expect it.

Again, thank you to all who has been there for his family.

Thank you for defending your friend, you are right he doesn't deserve to die because of his past. Some internet detective are trying to prove a case with his history and no one is really attacking him. Many people make mistakes and I am sure you have as well. What someone does and gets caught is public knowledge.

Another thing you fail to realize is you are attacking Joe Albero as the half assed couldn't make it internet writer. You are wrong and you need to offer Mr. Albero an apology.

Anon 1:24 PM what do you mean "..I bet if he was a white man?" Why do "you people" always have to place the race card. Salsibury News has always allowed criminal charges to be posted. My guess is that this was a first time a "black man" had his posted. What have you got to say about that? By the way who ever said he was a black man?

Sometimes catching criminals is harder because those who could give information refuse to cooperate with the police, even anonymously. That's the same as helping the felons stay out of jail so they can kill more people. If you have info., give it up.

I agree leave the mans past out of this. It is someones child, brother, cousin, uncle. If he has problems oh well. It is the fact that someone murdered this man for whatever reason. If they would kill someone they knew, you would be easy for them to kill. These sociopaths have no remorse. It does not matter they kill for dope, money, women. color of skin, if you have the wrong color rag hanging out of your pocket. It is time for the good people of this county to put a stop to the violence. I have lived in the real ghetto and we are not far from it is some areas. I see the people wondering the streets all hour of the night because of their addictions. The people doing this type of thing are not those people. The thugs that did this did a planned take over home invasion. If you know who they are you may be next drop a daime on them and know that did did society a favor and this mans family justice. I hope you come to my house. I will have three new daisey patches in my yard and no one will ever know where you went. I hear the scanner and the cops are responding to barking dog complaints, kids playing in the streets, radio to loud. There are at least 20 alarm calls per week that are false why do we the tax paying citiezens have to risk public safety so some alarm company gets rich. Do like the west coast departments and charge the company or home owner fifty bucks evrytime the police come to a false alarm. As for the rest of you get to know your neighbors and handle your stuff. Stop calling cops for b.s. The sheriff's office and the city could buy a car a year they handle so many alarm calls. I hope this man's family can find peace in such troubling times, as for the thugs I hope you suffer ten fold. Eye for an eye. I bet yo mommas are proud of you. Screw life in jail hang em high !! Downtown on the square so the rest of the thugs can drive by and see what happens when you murder. Leave them there until the buzzards pick em clean. This country has grown soft on this type of crimnal behavior. We need to move foward in all areas of thinking except crimes and punishment we need to go back. One can tell me it is not a deterant to see someone fry or hang. jail is like a country club what do they have to fear it is like old home week for most of these career criminals. Like i said please come to my house I will have your heads on a pole cowards.

Joe do a most wanted day on here. I think you could give crime solvers a run for their money. Do it on Tuesdays so on weekends you can post the arrest you help make. You are the media forum that could pull this off.

Joe relative to the comment about competing with Crime Solvers, why not work with them? They have done some really good work and with your help who knows what you could do. Just a thought, crime effects us all.

There are at least 20 alarm calls per week that are false why do we the tax paying citiezens have to risk public safety so some alarm company gets rich. Do like the west coast departments and charge the company or home owner fifty bucks evrytime the police come to a false alarm.

5:27 PM

I agree with your comment on this. 99.9% of all alarms are false whether it is a police call or a fire call. I remember asking Sheriff Nelms about the false alarms several years ago and he didn't want to do anything about it. Now we have a new Sheriff in town and it is time for him to start chaging for False alarms. You are wrong when you said 20 a week. The Sheriff's office is getting thousands of false alarms a week and we are wasting tax dollars responding to them when the alarm companies are getting rich. I do disagree with you on a barking dog. I call the police all the time for barking dogs. Trust me when I tell you that you don't want me to handle this situation myself. That is why we pay taxes.

There are a lot of people saying put a "special unit" together combining the effort of all agencies. That will clean things up some, just like it did in the past, but something happens and then the people do not stand behind it and then the "special unit" is closed down. If you combine the agencies as one, you will never need a special unit to work together, everyone will already be working together. We have Mike Lewis now, this is the perfect oportunity to do it right. Make it a complete sheriff's office. That way you will never have to make a special unit and combine people so they get work done.

If the ones who were ordered to the back rooms had firearms back there, they may have been able to save his life, and get rid of three murders in the process.

Why are we adding hate to hate? A man is dead. His family and friends are mourning.
Get a life - and stop trying to rationalize problems that aren't just because you feel an overwhelming need to be right.

Salisbury's issue is that it's heartless.

It is really sad that there is an idiot , posting those ignorant comments. If you didn't know Brooks ,you are not in a position to judge him, especially, about a petty weed charge. As far as the area of Salisbury he was killed in or lived in for that matter,it is still a life gone. He leaves a family that is deeply mourning. For the record I new his family personally, his mother and I grew up together, trust , he didn't come from a poor family , or a broken home. His family worked hard for everything they have. Stop being an anonymous jerk, say who you are , lets look into your background

Also to the anonymous idiot, I meant to add, that I served in the United States Army, with his dad, so please stop with the stereoytyping, This is 2009, Barack Obama is our new President, which shows it doesn't matter where you come from,or your past problems, everyone can change. I think you need to get out more often, sounds like you live in the woods, with an outside toilet. Also I grew up in Salisbury on Jersey Road , went to WiHi,and currently have a degree, and work for Lockheed Martin, as a computer engineer,so much for your stereotyping.

you know what putting his court briefs on here is none of anyones business. i'm so sick of the bashing that's going on. It was tragic and there is nothing we can do to change the fact that he is gone. It has nothing to do with color, drugs or any of the above. I just peace. Stop with the drama. I wish people would just let him rest in peace. Please stop passing judgement on others it is not your right. God is the only one that has that right. LOVE PEACE AND HAPPINESS!

Everyone with all the negative comments stating that drugs were the motive are all assumptions. Is anyone mentioning the fact this young man attended Temple University, graduating from UMES with a degree in finance.. Everyone is sooooo quick to give their opinion but this young man I'm sure had more education than all the losers that have nothing else better to do with their lives than to be online posting what they think to be true. Go get a book to read.I would have never blogged about this.. But Salisbury you all need a wake up call. Stop downing every black man that makes the news!!!!!! A friend of the late Brookes E. Harmon!

first off let me start off by saying i'm sorry for cursing and the caps. I didn't know. Now hopefully my voice will be heard. Brookes was a great man who didn't have troubles with people. I just don't understand why people want to put him down as if he deserved what happened. He didn't deserve that.No matter what people say about him i know and everyone that knew him knows the truth about how he was and the way he treated people. Brookes use to come and hang out at a friend of mines house. Meeting Brookes has changed my life. I really hope my kids turn out to be the MAN he was. He gave his all to his friends and family. I feel sorry for the people that are passing judgement on him cause you didn't get the chance to meet him. He always smiled and laughed about everything. Brookes was a stand up man and i believe that everyone should be proud to have known him. I am proud to call him MY FRIEND! May he rest in peace. We will all miss him. To his family, I am so sorry for your losses within the last few months you have lost not one but two cherished souls. God has a plan for both of them. You can believe that they are both angels smiling down upon us!!!! My love to all of you!

today is the day that we all get to say our goodbyes to our Beloved friend Brookes E Harmon. You will be so missed. I cherish all the memories of you. Like one time Brookes came over and we talked about lifes trials and tribulations. Every time i walk into my friends house i see him sitting on the couch asleep. He felt so comfortable at my friends house that he would sit on the couch and fall asleep. It is almost as if GOD meant for us to all come together and be friends. I'm so sad that i have lost a good friend. I know alot of MEN that are really messed up with loosing him. Alot of people will have this hurt in their hearts for the rest of their lifes. It says when someone passes we are to rejoice and be happy for them. Let's all rejoice and love one another. Just be happy that we all got to have a lil piece of him with us to carry on as we live our lifes. Everyone needs to say a prayer for this mans family and friends. Today will be one of the hardest days of many peoples life. This is to Brookes Harmon; when you look down upon us today make sure that you remember all your friends and family that love you so dearly. WE LOVE YOU BROOKES E HARMON.
love all of us from the HILL!!
