Today! 1:30pm At Chef Fred's In Salisbury

Ireton to Announce Mayoral Run

"Help Is On The Way" Tour Begins

--Salisbury—Neighborhood activist Jim Ireton will declare his candidacy for Mayor of Salisbury on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 1:30 PM at Chef Fred's in Salisbury. Citing the need to unite and rally citizens to the causes of cleaning up the Wicomico River, dedicating the resources to reducing crime that plagues the city, making neighborhoods safe for homeowners and renters to live, and returning a sense of fiscal responsibility to a debt ridden city budget, Ireton says that "Only a renewed sense of energy and change in perspective can turn Salisbury around."

Ireton was born in Salisbury in 1970, graduated with a Bachelors degree from Salisbury University in 1992 and holds a Masters Degree from the College of Notre Dame. A longtime community activist, Ireton was the first resident to purchase a home through Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services – doing so at the age of 24. Ireton, 38, currently serves as the Chairman of the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress, Treasurer for the Johnson's Lake Neighborhood Association, Board Member for the Wicomico County Education Association, Board Member for Pemberton Hall, Secretary of the Democratic Central Committee of Wicomico County, and President of the Democratic Club.

"I do not run to embrace the status quo. The issues that Salisbury faces today are ones that are having a debilitating effect on the Wicomico River, on families raising kids, students going to college, on citizens looking for meaningful jobs, on the ever increasing elderly population, and on the skyrocketing costs of water and sewer service. I will not run without specific plans to address the issues we face.

"I believe that the greatest service is public service. Since high school I have devoted my time to education and advocating for schoolchildren, the safety of neighborhoods in our community, and open, efficient, and responsive government.
I am forever grateful to this community for all of the opportunities it has given me. From being Baby New Year in the Salisbury Times in 1973, winning my first tennis tournament, at age 9, on the City Park Tennis Courts, to buying the first house through SNHS's revitalization efforts, to leading the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress, I have been blessed by a community that has always seen my potential. I am honored to work every day in order to improve the quality of life in my hometown. I believe we live in one of the greatest communities and that we should protect our quality of life in every way possible. I want Salisbury to know that help is on the way."

The "Help Is On The Way" Tour begins Today, November 15, 2008 at 1:30 PM at Chef Fred's, 1801 North Salisbury Boulevard, Salisbury. The public is invited to attend.

According to the Daily Slime today, Crime is down 4%: so he'll have to change his campaign platform because when it comes election time CRIME won't be a problem, according to the Daily Slime

Ireton is a breath of fresh air and if I still lived in Salisbury I would stump for his campaign door-to-door.He has not "insulated" himself from the citys problems by hiding away in an exclusive neighborhood so he knows the issues facing residents regarding the decay of the citys once family friendly neighborhoods and he will not give lame excuses to his constituents as to why they have to put up with the crime and gangs-he will ACT on those complaints.I wish you good luck and Godspeed,Jim.To beat the dirty-pool players on the other side of the table, you may need it.

Number 1 priotity. No not poop river.
crime is a problem as stated.
#1 problem no one can address or dont know how to address are jobs.
There is no gainfull employment on the shore , is there, if so please tell me where it is?
Our economy ,the country or the city of salisbury will not turn around until there are good jobs that people can make a living at , you know like pay your house payment, pay for food, buy a car.
The 6,7, and 8 dollar an hour jobs will not do it .
face it this city is a shit hole , including wico river . I just hope it will turn around.
Face it create jobs for us people who would like to survive and cut the bull crap.

Kudos to Jim.

Let's bust Obubba's bubble.

blutojthetotmom, you CAN still stump for him if you want to. The more the merrier and the better his chances. Think about it.

The most awesome event I have been to. What vision and dedication to public service. With Campbell, Cohen and Ireton, Salisbury could be a place that everyone will want to call home and crime really could be down.

Blutojthetotmom,

I live in the county. I will door knock for him. We all have a stake in Salisbury getting cleaned up.

Give a call and join.

I know Jim won't need to try a smear campaign, simply point out his competition's voting record on issues. I doubt the Comegys flight ever leaves ground, that's why the mayor hasn't ruled out running again. They are just blind to the fact that they can do whatever they want in an election year, however, why did it take this long to address a problem? We know they don't listen to the citizens of Salisbury, or they both would know they were dunn.

i was there today, and the one thing that stood out to me was this: Ireton's media machine is unmatched in this race. i was blown away by his presentation. 'Bubba' sent a letter to the Slime... Ireton did a full on blow out press conference with banners, yard signs, bumper stickers, a slide presentation... he even has a campaign song. i was sitting there thinking to myself that this is how Obama won. smart candidate. change message. superior media machine. Ireton is light years ahead of all the other candidates at this point. everybody else is phoning it in. that man is in it to win it.

Mr/Ms. 7:10-

Unfortunately Obubba, and if she runs, Barrie, will have the full support of the monied special interests: SAPOA, Greater Salisbury Committee, and local Chamber of Commerce. Look for the slumlords -- Insley et al, -- to feed propaganda to their tenants to scare them from voting for Mr. Ireton and Ms Campbell, just like in the 2007 election. Bellaciccio and local business "leaders" will provide very substabtial funding for Comegys and/or Tilghman.

If you're for Jim, ya gotta getta goin if ya wanna maka showin.

7:10 you forgot to mention he is light years ahead in his ability and knowledge of the issues that plague this city. He also has a plan. Does Comegys have a plan other than to plagarize? We haven't heard anything from Della Penna he probably plans to oust Barrie, that's a start. Good luck to both I hope you are not sore losers. Ireton is definitely in this to win.

I will vote for him if he promises not to spend one more dime on that damn FIRE MANSION! And for those of you who think that is a FIREHOUSE...you are morons!

I wish to congratulate Jim on his candidacy. It was a first class event that my wife and I enjoyed. My wife is hoping her citizenship comes through so she can vote for him. He has mine.

7:36 -

That's the reality of things, and the Daily Times can be expected to do the bidding of those special interests opposed to Jim Ireton and Debbie Campbell.

Can you fathom Bubba bragging about a 4% decrease in the criminal activity, and that's based on the data issued by the City that nobody believes anyway.

ANON 8:53 I have some bad news...there is no cure for retardation. If you go back far enough you'll find we are all immigrants. Unless, of course, you are 100% native american.

Jim has my vote and knows it. He is smart, organized, and most importantly he cares!

Wanted to comment on the 4 percent decline in crime, hasn't this come about because Sheriff Lewis is aggressively fighting crime at all approaches to Salisbury and in Salisbury too?

"Together We Can" flush Obubba Comegys down the drain!

No more imigration, this is our country.

Do those stats on crime include the responces, arrests and crimes solved by the sheriff's department that occur here in the city? If not it should.
