Senator Joe Long was the driving force,in the 80's, behind the Slot Machine Bill which allowed War Veterans Organizations and Fraternal Org., to have slot machines.
The Bill allowed the 8 Eastern Shore Counties (Worcester County opted out) to have no more than 5 slot machines. The Bill required they give 50% of the gross proceeds to charity.
There are approximately 50+/- machines in Wicomico County which donated approximately 1 million dollars a year to charity.
Joe and his lovely bride Mabel were exceptional people and did all they could for Wicomico County.
There are no more like him in the Legislature today. Joe will be missed and my very best to Mable and his family.

This is a sad day indeed. I was born on Senator Longs birthday and when he saw my birth announcement in the paper he contacted my parents and arranged for a visit. He would come to alot of my birthdays as a child. I always looked forward to his visits.

RIP Senator Long.

Joe was a wonderful man. I first met him through Little League baseball in 1970. He was a great leader and molded many of Salisbury's youth into good citizens and civic leaders. His record of public service is second to none. We have lost a great man and he will be sorely missed.

RIP Joe Long--You were one of the true great characters of the Eastern Shore and a man that always had time to listen to a kid or tell a joke to one of your many, many friends. It was a privilge to have known you. We need more men like you in public service today.
