Jim Ireton Announces for Mayor ...

... With a Unique Blend of Rhetoric and Substance

Anyone who attended Jim Ireton's announcement that he was running for Mayor had to be impressed.  Ireton's well thought out speech hit on the major problems facing Salisbury and Ireton presented common sense solutions to solving them.

The most important thing to note about Ireton's speech was an almost unique blend of persuasive rhetoric and substantive policy recommendations.  Ireton accomplished this because he is truly passionate about Salisbury and in solving the problems facing a once great city.  There was nothing "over the top" about anything he said.  Instead Ireton focused attention on 5 issues:
  • The Wicomico River
  • Growth and Development
  • Housing
  • Fiscal Policy
  • Crime
Ireton's approach is well studied, without any rash proposals.

I wish Jim the very best! His election as Mayor will truly put Salisbury on the road to recovery.

His very first priority will, necessarly, be to install a new Police Chief. Crime in Salisbury is out of control which is due largely to the present Chief's neglect of the agency.

Once crime is being successfully fought Jim can set about fixing the other important issues.

Got his speech? I'd love to read it. I'm bummed that I had to miss it. Sounds like it was one helluva great event.

If how his announcement was put together is any indication of how he organizes people to get things done, he'll make one helluva great mayor.

The North Prong will bring 30 jobs? Whoopty-doo. That was the mantra we heard when the majority of city council approved a $350,000 tax break for Walgreens because it was bringing 30 new jobs. What happened? Rite Aid and Super "G" both closed up resulting in a net loss of jobs. They need to spread that manure somewhere else.

Where will these jobs be on the North Prong? Maids to clean the proposed hotel rooms? Wait staff for the proposed restaurants? These are not livable wage jobs, these are barely paying the rent jobs. Anyone with a mortgage couldn't do it in the service industry.

Tom Becker has a vested interest in this project, he is after all a principal in an Architecture/Engineering firm.
