--Salisbury-- Candidate for Mayor of Salisbury, Jim Ireton, issues this statement regarding statistics used in yesterday's mayoral bid announcement.
1. The # of Police Positions at Salisbury Police Department that have been requested but NOT funded from 2003 to the present is 26 - Ireton used the number 12 in his remarks.
2. The average # of calls for service over the past 4 weeks is 118 per day, not 118 per week as Ireton stated.

Do those new crime statistics include responces, arrests and solved crimes by the sheriff's department that occur in the city? If not they should, it wouldn't be a honest assessment without it.
That 4% is supposed to be on top of 8% last year, according to the paper. But that don't make no sense to me because they said 8% in the middle of last year. I think they play fast and loose with the numbers.
How much has crime gone UP since that Tilghman woman got in office? Them numbers going down don't mean much till you know how much it's gone up.

If they lose track of millions of dollors how in the hell can they do stats. on crime? That 4% is a joke!
It will not matter if officers make $100,000 a year at SPD. Salaries will not motivate officers to work harder or even stay there. The problem is Chiefy and his schmucks at the top who seriously affect morale. Get rid of him, Mr. Ireton, and see what happens. And please, do not hire anymore pansies like baldy. Get someone who cares about policing and doing the right thing - regardless of salary!
Crime may be down 4% but wasnt it up 18% last year?
I hope when you become mayor you will take care of the employees with raises as they should be. Including public works.
It is nice the city provides us with the tools to do our job but new fire engines do not pay my bills.

Just because the current Mayor sucked as what she did at home and was encouraged to go outside the home and work, (in which she failed at that too) what makes you believe the Mayor of Salisbury position is a full time job?
It's only a full time job if you're looking over your shoulders and covering up your tracks each and every day.
Just ask Public Works, right Pam Oland and Barrie Tilghman. Yes, I'm onto you AGAIN.

This is not the time to be raising any salary, and it's time to stop the policy that the City should match the State Police salary level.

I agree. We do not have to offer more money, we simply need more Officers. I will have an interesting Post up tomorrow morning that gives my opinion as to how to resolve crime in Salisbury.
The SPD should be a "stepping stone" towards the MSP or WCSD.
Joe. We CAN do both..and NEED to (tighten the budget belt and do some lypo on the outrageous "muffin top" hanging over the pants). The (lovely) ladies know what I mean!!
joe- i hope your comment that spd "should" be a stepping stone is a typo. at one time, some were leaving the WCSO to come here. until officers are paid the fair wages they deserve, instead of being paid less then other agencies despite being much busier, then many will continue to leave despite any internal changes.

Look, while I respect the many Officers on the Salisbury Police Department, while I feel they were certainly short changed by Mayor Tilghman AND Gary Comegys pay wise, I regret seeing that someone would not respect and understand that their pay should be equal to other Law Enforcement Agencies, such as the State Police.
You go to work every day and do your job. MOST of the Officers hired by the SPD are VERY young and do not deserve the same pay as experienced and more qualified Officers elsewhere.
They can learn and grow with the SPD and once they have the proper experience they have the choice to move on and hopefully get picked up by higher paying Agencies like the WCSO or the MSP.
That is how I feel and I say so using my own name and I do NOT hide behind anonymous. If ANYONE from the SPD would like to contact me directly they are welcome to do so. I have NO issues with the SPD but no one out there can tell me that the SPD is anywhere near the Department is used to be under their former leader/Chief.
I would have to say SPD has more expierence then MSP and WCSO. And that is because of one man, BALDY as 4:23 PM called him. That man has been through hell and back more then once. He is a decorated retired NYC police offer and has more expierence then all of the officers in SPD, MSP, WCSO put together. I believe he knows what he is doing.
How about a real list of his accomplishments? Chief that is.
I feel sorry for you people. The SPD is no different than any other police department. The danger of the job is the same. The Sheriff department and SPD officers go through the same training and schools. We should all want our police to make a living and be able to support their families.I am glad we have men and women that have dedicated their life to law enforcement. No matter what agency they belong to...we need to support them.
joe- i am anonymous 1032pm. yes, i am a city police officer, but not one of the new young guys you say do not deserve as much as someone with more experience. that may be true, as with any job, with time on and experience, you should earn more. especially when you are doing so much more every year then the year before. but by saying that spd should be a stepping stone, you are basically saying that the citizens of salisbury deserve a lesser officer and lesser protection and service then those in the county. and although you do hear from time to time about a deputy making an arrest in the city, this is not the norm. all city calls for service are dispatched to city officers.
believe it or not, there are older guys with many years experience behind them in the SPD, and the pay should be on par with the county. there are many deputies making several thousand a year more base pay then some city officers with more time behind them. of course the county and state do deserve the money, as they face the same dangers and knuckleheads that the city officers do, but the calls for service are without a doubt higher in the city.
if i am wrong on any of these points, please let me know. for whatever bias i may have working for the city, i believe that we are greatly underpaid. and as far as posting anonymously, well, why bring more problems for myself that were not there already.
Dear anonymous 1:01 or SPD Officer,
With all due respect, IF you do not apreciate your job and or pay, you need to move on. If the WCSO or the MSP can provide you with less work and more pay, if you qualify, you should move on and provide for your family.
It is not the taxpayers responsibility to continue giving raises and then deal with the bullshit, crime is down by your Chief. Perhaps bicycle theft is down by 4% but his claim is false and no one is buying it any more.
While many Officers seem to come off extremely jealous of Sheriff Mike Lewis, MANY hold a tremendous amount of respect for him and would absolutely love to go to work for the Sheriff's Department and many already have done just that.
I know for me personally, I'd love to work for someone better than myself. It helps me learn and I do love to learn. The Sheriff respects his men and women and doesn't threaten them regularly or challenge them because one of them may have said something to Joe Albero. My God, you'd think I was the untouchable Godfather of Salisbury, the way he treats me and the fine Officers of the SPD.
Nevertheless, you canot deny that even if YOU were to get a $10,000.00 a year pay increase that this would be enough money to provide for yuour Family without a 2nd or 3rd job, right?
So yes, I believe the SPD is a stepping stone for many, (if not all) of the new younger Officers.
I also welcome you to correct me if you feel I am wrong. I have been a business owner for 25 years leading others successfully. I never required my Staff to come into work every day in dresses and suits while I wore bluejeans. Webster needs to put on a Uniform.
Anon 1:01. I left SPD for Howard County PD years ago. Leave SPD, screw LEOPS. Who can afford to retire on 50% after 25 yrs. I have a 1/4 of the call volume I did with SPD, and make twice the money that someone would with my experience. You can't beat retiring at 75% after 25 yrs. guaranteed overtime of 4 hrs. every pay shift. Laterals w/ 2 yrs exp. are starting at $50,000.
If interested ask for Sgt. Combes, 6118. The Sheriff's office of Wi Co has no retirement plan, and ther's nothing officers experienced in running from call to call. No that doesn't go on at HCPD, beacuse we're engaged in proactive policing.

actually there are many former spd officers that have moved to wcso and msp that hate it. They were police officers at spd and now are traffic officers at wcso and msp because lets face it, that is exactly what they do. And also i do not understand why you would want to work for wcso. You pretty much have no pension when you retire, and plus you have to work for

Hey most people were OK about a raise for the police department. You see the majority of the council made promises to get elected, then they turned around and took the other half of the police raise away after being elected. They are a disgrace to the community. We all want more staffing just like the chief. It can't happen all at once however do you want a mayor that's going to make staff increases, maybe not as many as wanted, but a some are better than the "O" they have been getting. We can vote for same ole, or change.
