Can you please help get the word out..... Last year, someone attempted to break in my house. I called the cops and they told me they could not do anything about it & not to worry that it was prob. a drunk college kid that busted out my window and tried to get through my front door?! Yesterday, my neighbor informed me that approx. a week ago, she was awaken when she heard noise outside of her window. She then realized that someone was trying to pull out her air unit. She called the cops and they told her there was nothing they could do about it. Outside of her window she found baggies of cocain. Two days ago, this same neighbor was laying in her bed when she again heard something outside of her window. This time it was a white male, maturbating if front of her window. Again, she called the cops and AGAIN she gets the same answer. What can we do to protect ourselves if the cops can't do anything??

Yes, you are right. Salisbury is not safe. Anytime you call the police department, the same old story - they cannot do anything. We had a "thief" in our neighborhood but their story - sorry, we cannot get involved". They NEVER want to get involved.
But yet, go over the speed limit and they are there with their flashing lights and ticket book to hand out a speeding ticket in one minute!
Just yesterday, all the bikers were out on the roads and I saw VERY few police out there to slow down traffic for the safety of the bikers. Motorists were traveling down South Division Street 50 miles an hour and the bikers were yelling out to "slow down"
Where were the police? They dont want to get involved or else they say they are short staffed.
The police in Salisbury are overwhelmed. The county needs to take over and combine our law enforcement resoucres.
Let me understand this....this lady who lives in SBY needed the police and was told "too bad"????
My friends, who live just outside the corporate limits of the city, and had alarm system which was malfunctioning. It would issue a "silent alarm", and at any hour of the day or night a SBY police officer would show up at their home. After more than 20 of these responses, all of which were false alarms, the problem was resolved. My point is if they were responding to these alarms, time after time, and ACTUALLY outside the city limits, this poor lady should have the whole force there to deal with the intruder.
Al Webster should be removed immediately and shift control to Mike Lewis. Barrie and Louise are derelict in their duties if they do not take action now. How many more City resident taxpayers must fall victim to in-City crime?
salisbury is way under staffed. my understanding is that webster is calling a completely staffed department with 85 officers when they use to say 107 officers was completely staffed. What needs to happen to SPD is to get a good hands on chief that is willing to work to get the department back on track of how it use to be. SPD use to have a extremely well trained swat team, extremely well trained officers. Now under webster you can barely get the officers to show up for a shift and if swat is called out not enough officers show up for the team to safely deploy.
Better yet, Salisbury's charter needs to be surrendered and let Wicomico take care of the people. Then there wouldn't need to be a squabble over tax differential. The people of Salisbury needs to call for this. I bet the Sheriff's office would have responded to the call from these people.

Did the victim call 911, or the SBY PD directly. I don't know, but it seems to me that a call to 911 would get a response from the State Police?

Law enforcement was never designed to protect people from every concievable danger. It's much too tall an order. Over the years we have been led to believe that this is the case by our govt. and a great many of us have followed like sheep to slaughter. We have given up our rights to protect ourselves as well as the means by which to do it. We have been legislated into being victims and our school systems have instilled in our children at an early age that if you defend yourself you are wrong and will be punished for it. Take an ass whipping by another student or be suspended.
To those who currently don't have the means within their home - may I suggest a modest investment in an insurance policy through Smith & Wesson, Glock (my preference), or any of the manufacturers of finely crafted firearms. Take the time to learn to be proficient with your new investment and it could prove to be the best investment you ever made.

911 calls go to Wicomico Central Alarm and are then routed to the agency having primary jurisdiction. If the calls come in from Salisbury, Fruitland, Delmar, etc., they are routed to the respective agency. If the calls are after hours or on weekends in smaller towns without 24 hour dispatch, the calls are routed to the Sheriff's Office since they handle after hour dispatching for those towns. Salisbury has a 24 hour communications center from which calls within the city are dispatched. As far as those calls originating out in the county, the call are transfered alternately Sheriff's Office, State Police, Sheriff's Office, State Police.
Yes, this laady is right, Salisbury is unsafe. It was not this bad back when we had a real Police Chief and a real mayor. This has to change come April!

i do not believe that the lady called the police and was told that there was nothing they could do. the police would show up and look for any indications at the scene that might help them track this intruder. that is the very least they would do. while they cannot stand guard 24/7 at anyone's door they can do patrol checks ina particular neighborhood. if any police officer tells yopu there is nothing that can be done he or she will be in trouble. now they are not magicians who can solve crimes the way it is potryaed on tv but when ever you call police they come, and when you call in an emergency they come balls to the wall. i can assure you it is evry cop's dream to stop a crime in progress. i think the original post was an exaggeration at best but most likely an attempt by joe albero to make his case against cheif webster and the mayor.

An alarm system might also be a good idea, since it seemed to work for a previous poster when the cops weren't needed... Plus you can call the cops right from your alarm system by pushing the police button. ADT is great! (My suggestion is to get the freaking loud outside alarm too so everybody in the whole neighborhood knows something is going on at your house! That will get them running!

Moral goes up better response by officers to serve the public.
SPD officers are afraid to do thier job because it might make the chief answer questions. He is afraid to do any good high profile cases.

OMG-I used to find ditched stolen bikes in my yard when I was in Salisbury but never the likes of this post.Sadly,the trespassers have nothing to fear.I do not own a gun but an aerosol can and a cigarette lighter out the window would definitely slow a man down enough to club him with something.The PD needs some balls(figuratively,not literally).Aggressive neighborhood patrols on bike and by car just to start...
Let the Sheriff's office take over the entire. The city has lost control. The Sheriff's office does ot even have a decent disabilty package yet they respond to all calls even barking dog complaints. When the boss is elected by the poeple you just get better service. Mike Lewis is a tru crime fighter along with his men and women. The Sheriff's Office, Delmar. MSP, and Fruitland all seem to work great together. The SPD Officers are beat down from the abuse within. I understand why but certainly do not condone it. SPD Officer keep on keeping on. It has to change for you guys soon or there will be hell to pay later, this economy is in trouble. kick that idiot back to Baltimore. Start a county police force with three specific precincts. The rank and file have worked well together for years and it would be far more effective than this fragmented approach we currently have. I still feel the Top Law Man or Women should be elected this keeps it real

Call it improvising.....or maybe I watch too many action movies but I am determined if I am ever attacked or invaded I will not go quietly and become a crime statistic.
when i lived on the plaza, i caught an intruder INSIDE my apartment, drugged up and passed out. ran him out myself (and i'm not a scary looking woman) before the cops showed up. i got his full name, made calls, got the name of the place where he did odd jobs, and gave the info to the cops.
they did NOTHING. no arrest, no follow up, and didn't much care.
i had an alarm system put in. yep, it went off a few times by accident. you know who showed up every time? NOT the cops. the fire dept. THEY showed up fast, i never saw a cop.
where i live now, i thought about an alarm, but the company said alarming my whole house without motion sensors inside (because of kids who get up in the night) could cost thousands.
i wish we had bought out of state, frankly. i have zero faith in the salisbury police dept.

Maybe we can help the ladies a bit here-if you are ever stalked/trapped on the way to your car in a parking lot, spread the keys through your dominant hand knuckles (facing out like Wolverwine claws on X-Men). If attacked plunk them directly/repeatedly into the eyes-forget the groin (and get a shot or two in the ear canal too) of your attacker. No jury in the world will consider a set of keys anything but an improvised defensive weapon. You are right:nobody should ever allow themselves to be bound, put in a trunk, or driven down isolated roads without making a big fuss first. Good for you-stay safe out there.
DRIVE SOME 4 INCH NAILS THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF A 2 X 4 AND BURRY IT JUST DEEP ENOUGH TO COVER TGHE BOARD UNDER YOUR WINDOWS. BET YOUR PEPPERS AND THEIVES WILL SLOW DOWN A BUNCH AT YOUR HOUSE.
One of our neighbors had great success with red pepper - only drawback is it most be reapplied frequently.
