Pittsville Fire Dept. Starts Fund Raising For New Expansion

With a 10,800 square foot expansion to their existing building, Pittsville will be similar in size of the new Station 16 in Salisbury, yet 1/10th of the cost! That's right Ladies & Gentlemen, the new 60' x 180' expansion will cost LESS than $1,000,000.00 to build, not $10,000,000.00!

It will have 8 bays, (sound familiar) a Bunk Room for 10 people, a new Kitchen as they will continue to SELF SUPPORT themselves, (unlike Salisbury) by renting out a Banquet Room and Cater food.

Chief See from Salisbury clearly says they're not in the business of renting space and feeding people. He must have been raised in the same Boarding School Mayor Barrie Tilghman sent her children to. They seem to forget where they come from and simply throw it on the backs of the Taxpayers, unlike Pittsville and other fine Fire Departments throughout the County.

So far, (they just started) the Pittsville Fire Department has raised $32,000.00 towards their $1,000,000.00 goal and considering how successful this Fire Department has been, they have a reputation of out doing any other Department in the County and the awards they have received clearly proves it.

So my hat is tipped to this fine group as they know how to keep it real and not shove their wants and needs on the Taxpayers. The Taxpayers clearly have a CHOICE i Pittsville and I hope this plug brings them even more people interested in donating more funds to get them where they need to be sooner than later.

What kind of awards have they recieved? Just recently I have moved into the town of Pittsville and would like to donate money but I haven't heard of all these good things about them. Could you maybe tell all of us citizens of Pittsville and other surrounding towns why we should donate money, I have been here almost two years now and I haven't seen alot of fundraisers there, I mean I am not saying they don't have fundraisers but I have heard from some of their members that they are not required to work these fundraisers, meaning if they don't come nothing happens to them. I know of other fire departments that have fundraisers all the time and if their members have to show up and if they miss a certain number of these fundraisers they are punished. So why should we the citizens of Pittsville donate money to the fire department for an addition(not a new piece of equipment) when the members don't have to show up. It's probably like any other organization the same old people doing all the work. Is this the same fire department that I heard has male strippers as a fundraiser?? So please let me know of all these awards that they have gotten and maybe my opinion will change.

I like the story Joe but having the message up for Blaine I think is not in very good taste. Wouldn't a picture of their sign promoting a fundraiser had been a better choice.

Who/what is Blaine?

Blaine is a little boy who died from cancer last year. Why put a picture with his name on it, that little boy touched many lives and gave hope to many people but I really don't want a constant reminder of our loss. Yes we will all miss him but we have to be able to move on. That was poor choice for a picture, even a picture of their firehouse would have been much better.

Yes we have many many fundraisers all year long. Some of those include Bingo May-October, Wild Game dinner and Auction March 15th this year, Basket Bingo 6-8 times a year, Male review ( that is done within County and State regulations as it is done with a Professional Company ) , Sporting Clay Shoot that is done 1 time a year. Also YES , members have to attend 9/23 Bingos thru the summer to remain an active member along with other requirements such as 8 /12 regular meetings and 10 % of Fire and Ems calls for the year. Our department has been and will continue to be active in fund raisers for our new building and general operating funds due in part to the amount of money we do get from the county. While we appreciate the County's help the continually rising cost of equipment and utilities and other associated costs to the department, it is not nearly enough to run a department without additional fund raisers. That being said we accept all donations and if they are earmarked for a certain project the treasurer makes sure that is where they go.

You ask what awards the department has recieved . Well above and beyond being in service to Wicomico County and surrounding areas for more than 75 years. We also have IMO the premiere EMS system in the county along with our partner station Parsonsburg. We were awarded the MIEMSS Star of Life in 2002 for EMS Excellence. Along with many State Proclamations and County Proclamations for service to the citizens of Wicomico County.

And Pittsville always wins the award for most members present at multi dept meetings. LOL

Doesn't everyone get those awards and proclamations? Seen plenty of others getting those too.

Not the MIEMSS Star of Life award!!! That is given to a select few every year during EMS week and Pittsville is the only department to recieve that award on the Eastern Shore to my knowledge. there are also a few individuals that have been awarded The Star of Life in the area. Members of Pittsville, Parsonsburg and Salisbury. Pittsville prides itself on professionalism and will continue to provide the highest quality of care possible to the citizens of Wicomico County and surrounding areas.

Tony and the entire team at the fire station deserve to blow their own horn - they have worked hard at establishing a very good fire and EMS service for the community.

That was a very good article, but why must people bash other Fire Dept. Look if your house is on fire at 0300 hours would you really care who shows up. I would just as long as some one does. And just as long as my family is safe. I am a volunteer and I dont care what others say about my station or about me but at 0300 hours and I get a call on that pager, I am out that door and jumpin on the engine. If you serve under the Moltese cross then it shouldnt matter. - Hawns
