NAACP wins on "nigger" in dictionary. We must now win on “nigger” with our own people.
A Small Victory...A Giant Step…The battle is not over!!
There has been a change in Webster's Dictionary. Thanks to Kweisi Mfume, former President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The word nigger will no longer be synonymous with African-Americans. It has been duly noted that it's a racial slur and not what African-Americans them-selves are. Along with this, all racial and religious slurs will finally be indicated for what they really are - cruel and evil slurs too often used to degrade people.
Now the challenge is to stop our young black men and women from using it.
According to Modesto/Stanislaus Branch NAACP President Wendy Byrd, the “N” word is a racial slur no matter how you try to manipulate it.
The recent Don Imus incident where a 66 year-old white male talk show host felt comfortable enough in calling the women of the Rutgers Basketball Team “Nappy Headed Ho's” is an indication of the need to examine the effect of racial slurs and attitudes in general.
We cannot hold others accountable for using derogatory and degrading terms against us when it is acceptable for us to use it against ourselves. This is a double standard, which is just as painful and unacceptable.
There is a need to educate black youth, in particular, about the history and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. The “N” word was used to dehumanize, insult, control and profile African-Americans for over 450 years. Our Ancestors died to give us the right to hold a microphone, enjoy freedom of speech and equal opportunity for employment. We are indebted for this privilege and should not counteract the movement. In other words, don’t cut the hand that fed you.
Please join the NAACP’s around the country in discouraging the use of the “N” word and other derogatory terms that offensive and self-destructive. It all begins at home with each and every one of us. You must teach someone, and teach them to teach.

Way to go, Joe! I totally agree. As a teacher, I am always shocked when I hear African-American boys call each other the "N" word. I say boys because I rarely if ever hear girls use that term with each other.
The flip side of that coin is that these same youth will "beat up" any white kid who calls them the "N" word unless said white kid is part of their "Posse". Before anyone gets on here to state that I don't know what I am talking about, I have heard it far too much from far too many "white gangstas"
Kudos to the NAACP for taking this step. Now lets see Jesse, Al, and others step up to the mike and encourage all the "Gangsta Rappers" and American Youth to stop using the "N" word. Let those guys become positive role models instead of instigators of a larger racial divide.
I'm sorry but I believe this post is highly out of line. It is offensive to my family and our race. I wish you would remove this post from your site and I'm sorry to say you have lost my respect and my time on your site.

The "N" word is never ok to use, its history is far too brutal. Everyone in the earlier posts who tried to defend the use of it as being applied only to "ignorant" people is obviously ignorant of the pain it causes. While we are at it, how about everyone start being professional and quit using the "b" word and other derogatory language at work? The First Amendment protects your right to say these words, but it doesn't protect you from looking like a small-minded person. Say what you want at home, but try to be more professional when you are collecting a paycheck.

Anon, I'm confused. How can that comment be in any way disrespectful to you. If you are black, it should affirm that the NAACP is being a beacon of freedom and enlightenment by not allowing the use of this most offensive word to continue.
If you are white, then it should be a reaffirmation that we are willing to take proactive measures to stop the cycle of racism and discrimination. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
well how come they can call eachother the "n" word but we can't yet they can make fun of white people and hang out in packs and do whatever they want and always try to start fights with whites...answer that...now don't get me wrong, i have black friends but they don't act like those 100 kids breaking stuff for no reason the other night you were speaking of in some post earlier
oh yea and its me again, what wayne said i think was right too, when i stubb a toe or fall or something that just sucks, i say the n word which has nothing to do with a african american person, i just say it out of pain, or i say it about white people sometimes to when they cut me off, it has nothing to do with their color most of the time...i just don't understand your obsessity with this subject...you see us getting called white folks and honkeys but we don't go cry to the kkk, because we don't support them, they in my opinion are the real losers

I fail to see what the "N" word has to do with stubbing ones toe. When I do something like that, I usually swear a little and keep on going. The "N" word has nothing to do with that.
