Coming To Every School Near You!

I received word yesterday the the Sheriffs Department has now hired a Police Officer for Bennett High, Wicomico High, Parkside High, Mardela High, Bennett Middle, Wicomico Middle, Salisbury Middle and Alternative School.

That equals 8 schools with deputies. The 9th deputy will be a Sergeant that will supervise/fill in when absent. The Board of Ed will be paying all expenses (salary, benefits, etc.) for the school year and the county will pay the expenses during the summer when school's out.

The games are over and Wicomico County is taking the multiple threats of bombs and other illegal activity very seriously and will do what it takes to make our children safe.

As wonderful as an education can be, some students don't take it as serious as others and can disturb an entire School and it's about time these bullies were stopped. Just more proof that the Sheriffs Department needs to be recognized and thanked. Have you waved to an Officer today? I did.

UPDATE: We have had deputies in the schools for some time now, but would constantly have to take them out depending on court security issues, road patrol shift shortages, vacation, transports, etc. We started out with 6 last year and it would sometimes dwindle down to three. In order for the board of ed to be guaranteed a permanent deputy in the school, we entered into a "contract" where they have agreed to pay the expenses I mentioned before and the county would cover the expenses in the summer The grant for the Wicomico Middle school deputy has been in place for a period of time. They've had deputies in the schools for a while now. Last year, I think there were 6.

The Church Street CSAFE grant pays for part of the cost of having a deputy at Wi Middle. Weed and Seed used to kick in too, but they aren't operating over here anymore.

Basically, the Board of Ed will NOT be paying all expenses...the BOE is too broke to supply kids with necessary classroom items, let alone supplying them with safety.

sbygirl,

You must be nuts! Wicomico County IS a safer place to live. What is your deal going on the attack like that anyway. The City of Salisbury IS in Wicomico County. As more homes are built, as more businesses move to the area, calls are going to increase. However, this could be a false alarm and or many other reasons why calls would be up or down.

Some of you people are so defensive. The Sheriffs Department is doing a fantastic job protecting the County. IMO, you need to bark at the City of Salisbury Police Department because that's a disgrace!

having deputies in schools are a very important factor. I think it should be moreso for terrostic threats and outside intruders then inside students problems. If there are troublesome students in the school ship them out, especially high school. If they have not realized its time to grow up and respect others while getting an education thats free then they need to be revoked from that privelage. Luckily i went to mardela so there were not many of the problem kids that have the bad lifestyles at home which reflects upon there everyday habits and actions.

As far as the county being safer and the police doing better, THEY NEED TO KEEP THE COMMUNITIES SAFE!

no offense to those people who are on section 8 housing and live in the ghetto but thats where all the violence is taking place and thats where it needs to be patrolled and taken care of. I think the section 8 housing and welfare should be stricter on people who they allow into the systems. It allows the people to become lazy, sit at home all day, have 15 kids, and pull out guns everytime someone cusses them.

You dont see the cops worried about the nice neighborhoods like fox chase, green hill, or kensington woods! BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE HAVE LIVES AND CAN AFFORD TO LIVE NORMALLY AND DONT HAVE TO RAISE A GUN TO GET SOMETHING IN LIFE.
This not necassarily being just the ritzy neighborhoods, you can go to the middle class ones like centennial village and hunters mill. THEY HAVE LIVES TOO
