E-Cigarettes Potentially as Harmful as Tobacco

Many smokers switched to electronic cigarettes hoping they would be less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. But a new study at the University of Connecticut found that e-cigarettes are potentially as harmful as tobacco cigarettes.

Using a new testing device, they found that e-cigarettes with a nicotine-based liquid could damage DNA as much as unfiltered cigarettes. Cellular mutations caused by DNA damage can lead to cancer.

The researchers also discovered the vapor from non-nicotine e-cigarettes caused as much DNA damage as filtered cigarettes, probably due to the numerous chemical additives in the vapors.

French historian accused of stealing American war heroes’ dog tags to sell on eBay

For two years, the historian had been visiting a National Archives facility in Maryland to review files on U.S. pilots who had crashed in German-controlled Europe during World War II.

Last week, Antonin Dehays, a 32-year-old Frenchman, finally acknowledged one reason why, federal investigators say: He’d been stealing the dog tags of dead American heroes, selling many of them on eBay.

“The theft of our history should anger any citizen,” the Archivist of the United States David Ferriero said Tuesday in a statement, “but as a veteran I am shocked at allegations that a historian would show such disregard for records and artifacts documenting those captured or killed in World War II.”

Dem Rep Jeffries: ‘Every Racist in America Voted for Donald Trump’

During a speech on the House floor on Monday, Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) argued that while not all Trump voters are racists, “every racist in America voted for Donald Trump.”

Jeffries said, “Since January 20th, we’ve seen a disturbing increase here in America in anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-black, anti-LGBT and anti-Semitic acts. And the question is, is this just a coincidence, or could it possibly have something to do with the election of the 45th president of the United States of America? Now, in part, what we’re seeing is connected to a historic backlash that has often occurred throughout this journey that we’ve been on here in America, that whenever we make significant progress, there’s always a backlash amongst some in America who’ve got a problem with the fact that we’ve done things designed to be more consistent with our values of liberty and justice for all, equal protection under the law.”

Unsanctioned Event Expected Late July in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, MD – : The Ocean City Police Department is advising residents and visitors to expect an unsanctioned event that will bring college-aged visitors to Ocean City on July 21-23. Like many of the other events in Ocean City, both sanctioned and unsanctioned, the OCPD has been planning and preparing for this event and any incidents that may arise.

“We historically see college-aged visitors throughout the months of May and June,” said Chief Ross Buzzuro. “With the expectation that this event will bring an influx of young adults, residents and visitors can anticipate increased enforcement and high visibility.”

Business owners should staff accordingly and employees should be prepared for a busy July weekend. Residents are reminded, as always, to report any ordinance violations, including sleeping in vehicles and noise.

“We will continue to work with the business community and our residents as the event approaches.” Chief Buzzuro continued. “We’re optimistic that the majority of people that are planning to come to Ocean City throughout the summer months are here to enjoy the beach and everything our town has to offer.”

‘We Were Sitting Ducks; Gun Saved Our Lives’

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WWJ) – A Michigan representative who survived a gun attack during a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning in Virginia is detailing the harrowing moments the gunman opened fire.

Michigan Rep. Mike Bishop tells WWJ Newsradio 950 he was attending the practice around 5:30 a.m., just outside of Alexandria, when shots rang out. He said he and his colleagues were “sitting ducks.”

“As we were standing here this morning, a gunman walked up to the fence line and just began to shoot. I was standing at home plate and he was in the third base line,” Bishop said. “He had a rifle that was clearly meant for the job of taking people out, multiple casualties, and he had several rounds and magazines that he kept unloading and reloading.”

The shooting went on for roughly 10 minutes, with some accounts putting the number of shots fired around 100. Four people were injured, including two Capitol Hill police officers and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Louisiana. The suspect was also shot.

“The only reason why any of us walked out of this thing, by the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover. We were inside the backstop and if we didn’t have that cover by a brave person who stood up and took a shot themselves, we would not have gotten out of there and every one of us would have been hit — every single one of us,” said Bishop. “He was coming around the fence line and he was looking for all of us who had found cover in different spots. But if we didn’t have return fire right there, he would have come up to each one of us and shot us point-blank.”

97% of Voters in Bankrupt Puerto Rico Want Statehood

The banner headline will read 97 percent of Puerto Rico voted for statehood, but only 23 percent of voters cast ballots on June 11 due to opposition boycotting.

Of the 2,458,036 registered voters in Puerto Rico, about 548,387, or 97 percent, of Puerto Ricans voted in a non-binding referendum for the territory to become America’s 51st state, while approximately 16,960, or 3 percent, were opposed, according to the Wall Street Journal review of early returns. Turnout was just 23 percent.

Governor Ricardo Rosselló and his legislature-majority New Progressive Party [Republican] held the referendum, despite filing on May 3 for the largest municipal bankruptcy in the history of the United States. The island and its state-owned utility ran out of cash and defaulted on its $73 billion of debt. After the filing, Breitbart News reported that Puerto Rico’s public pension plans have only $1.8 billion in assets to pay $45 billion in liabilities.

Dog Owners Walk 22 Minutes More Per Day. And Yes, It Counts As Exercise

Dog owners often say the best thing about dogs is their unconditional love.

But new research suggests there's another benefit, too. Dog owners walk more.

In a study published Monday in the journal BMC Public Health, dog owners on average walked 22 minutes more per day compared to people who didn't own a dog.

And they weren't just dawdling.

"Not only did we see an increase in exercise, but also the exercise was at a moderate pace," explains study author Daniel Mills of the University of Lincoln, in the United Kingdom.

The study found that the dog owners walked briskly and got their heart rates up. At times, their pace was about 3 miles per hour, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers moderate intensity.
