Laurel, De. – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Laurel man after he was found to be in possession of heroin following a traffic stop on Saturday.

The preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at around 9:58 p.m. as troopers from the Troop 5 Pro-active Criminal Enforcement (P.A.C.E.) team were on patrol in the area of Townsend Street and West Street, Laurel. It was at this time the troopers observed a black Dodge pickup truck traveling on Townsend Street turn left without activating his left turn signal. A traffic stop was initiated and the suspect vehicle entered the Shore Stop parking lot located at 405 North Central Avenue, Laurel. Upon coming into contact with the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Robert L. Jones, 32 of Laurel, they detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside of the car. A subsequent search of the suspect and the vehicle was conducted at which time troopers located and seized more than 87 grams of heroin, approximately five grams of marijuana and fifty-two suspected heroin bags. Robert L. Jones was taken into custody without incident.

Robert L. Jones was transported to Troop 5, Bridgeville where he was charged with Manufactures, delivers, or PWID a controlled substance, Possession of Heroin in a Tier 5 Quantity, Possession of Marijuana and Failure to signal. Jones was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $10,200.00 secured bond.

Here is a brief synopsis of the Wicomico County Volunteer Firemen's Association Meeting held March 21, 2017 concerning allowing the Station 1 Volunteers to stay a corporation and to vote on giving them territory

It was apparent that the majority of the volunteers in Wicomico County overwhelmingly support Station 1 and their secession from the City and the Salisbury Fire Department? It appeared that the county volunteers and the county fire chiefs association are going to support Station 1 on their quest for the County portion of the Salisbury Station 1 fire district.

It was obvious that Rick Hoppes had his paid Flunkies in their to speak for him to fight his battle. The biggest loudmouth was paid paramedic Tony Webster who shouldn't have been allowed to speak since he was a paid paramedic with Salisbury and it was obvious this was about his paid job. He was sitting with the Pittsville Volunteers, but he doesn't even live in Pittsville anymore. I don't think he even owns property in Pittsville any longer so is he still a member??

Then Cherry Cheeks Tri Townsend got up to the podium several times and asked multiple questions to the fire chiefs committee who is ready to support the Station 1 volunteers. This was wrong because it was supposed to be comments only, but then it went back and forth between Cherry Cheeks Tri Townsend and Chief Joe Morris from Statino 74, Delmar.

At some point Rick Hoppes got up to the podium and told some flat out lies and even said that he didn't want the Station 1 volunteers and said they made that decision to leave and he accepted it and they were on their own. Rick Hoppes should not have been allowed to speak because he to is not a volunteer firemen and it is obvious that he is concerned about his job and the jobs of paid firemen in Salisbury, not the volunteers.

Then Mark Cotter who is supposed to be a "retired" volunteer from Salisbury Station 16 got up to speak. He tried to make a motion to have this "bad family fight" remanded back to Salisbury to let them work it out on their own. It was seconded by Tad Farlow from the Pittsville Volunteer Fire Company with Tony Webster who was sitting at the front table as an officer for the Firemen's Association. Then it got contentious about the bylaws of the association.

Station 1 Chief Cory Polidore got up to the podium again and this time explained that the Station 1 volunteers didn't want to go back to the City Fire Department under Chief Hoppes and explained that it was like trying to go back to a relationship where you were constantly getting abused and beat up.

I'm Officially A Senior Citizen Today?

Well, it's official. I received my AARP Card and today I turned 55 years old. 

How come I keep hearing 70 is the new 50? How come when I was younger, a senior citizen was 65 years old? 

If people are living longer and we're in much better shape these days, why on earth do they want to make me a senior citizen at 55?

So I was thinking, once Gavin turns 18, should I move into one of those over 55 communities where things are much less expensive? 

Should I start asking for discounts at restaurants and stores? 

Should I officially retire and give it all up? Should I apply at WalMart and start handing out smiley face stickers? Will my insurance rates officially go way down starting today?

Am I really "OLD" (a senior) as of today?

Well let me put it to you this way. I will FIGHT this "old" thing as if it were cancer. When I start feeling old, walking like Fred Sanford and a Police Officer asks me my name and I hesitate, asks me where I'm headed and I simply smile, then and only then will I consider myself a "senior citizen". 

So AARP, take this Card and shove it. I'm nowhere near ready for you. 

Oh, to all of you who sent me Happy Birthday wishes this morning, not only do I have no clue who the hell most of you are, I really don't give a sh!t. Uh Oh, am I becoming a senior?

Have Democrats and Media Dropped Their Collective Baskets or have they always been this way? Ronald Reagan said the above quote in October of 1964 during his Goldwater speech so that should be an indication, this is nothing new, it's just gotten more belligerent.

Since the last election, we've all seen the Liberals become more and more violent in their "resistance" to anything the Trump Administration does to make Americans' lives (including theirs) better. Is the media also cheering this violence inciting it? It would seem with every incident - whether it's a white flag or not, the media, known for it's liberal slant, seems to revel in this violence.

Sunday co-anchor Peter Hegseth said on Fox & Friends this morning, "Cultures are created." True; therefore, is the media and liberals creating a culture of violence?

It is up to citizens to discern the truth these days and with the Fake News mixed with legitimate news muddled. One has to ask questions about everything proffered from the media and scrutinize it like never before. Often our media is more of a propaganda outlet than news resource.

For example, the market has been surging for four months, new jobs coming back to the States, consumer and overall confidence is up for the first time in well over a decade and many investors are re-investing in America in this longterm rally, yet the media doesn't report the polls that indicate any of these facts. This new business environment is good for everyone as it indicates our economy is about to make a real recovery after stagnation for many years. This demonstrates President Trump is not the monster the media and liberals created as his initiatives are working towards making people's lives much better.

Another is Rachel Maddow's disastrous Trump Tax revelation last week. Four million viewers tuned into her show expecting some great damning information that would impugn his character, show he doesn't pay taxes (as Clinton and her posse claimed during the general) and out him to the world. In retrospect, we now see that didn't work out so hot as Maddow slithered away, blaming her audience after her public tantrum only produced proof that Trump paid more than any of his detractors! (And it got her slapped with a defamation of character lawsuit filed by Freedom Watch and a severe drop in viewership.)

The situation with fear-mongering and the proposed budget has reached epic levels of misinformation because liberals prey on those who only hear 'Facebook Snips' which are simply untrue. Meals on Wheels is not going away without Federal money and neither is Big Bird, but the Left continues to spin this tale of woe without any substantiation whatsoever. (More on this later.)

The fact is this, liberals are not going to out President Trump because he hasn't done anything wrong to warrant such an action. In fact, they would have a much easier time of it, if they suck it up (like many of us did during Obama years) and live their lives, finding positive things in said lives to be thankful for. While this advice is practical and logical, something tells me, the liberals and their propaganda puppets aren't going to give up soon.

For those trying to discern fact from fiction in the news, keep a skeptical eye and look at other situations surrounding negative news stories. If it's something really salacious or provocative, chances are, the Trump Administration has just achieved (or about to) something that's working towards America First.

States Tell ‘Slowpoke’ Drivers to Get Over — Or Else

Maybe you’re a bit of a lead-foot. Maybe you don’t like driving behind trucks. Or maybe you just really like the view from the left lane. Well, an increasing number of states have a message for you: Get over. Or pay up.

Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia are racing to become the latest in a wave of states that have imposed higher fines and more restrictions on driving in the left lane of multilane highways. The crackdown is an attempt to enforce what legislators say drivers should already know: the far left lane of a highway is for passing, and only passing.

Since 2013, at least five other states — Florida, Georgia, Indiana, New Jersey and Tennessee — have also stiffened penalties for “slowpoke” driving or “left-lane camping.” While all states require slow vehicles to keep right, they do not all specifically require drivers to get out of the left lane after overtaking another motorist or set penalties for failing to do so.

“Left-lane cruisers, besides being dangerously oblivious to the other drivers around them, are annoying as heck,” said Kaye Kory, the Democratic Virginia state delegate who co-sponsored the legislation in her state.

A Viewer Writes: Wicomico County Athletics

Hi. This may be something that you have already discussed on your site but I was wondering if you have ever talked about why Wicomico County charges parents to see their children play at their home school (any school in Wicomico).

This is something that they do for both Varsity and JV games. I find it odd that they pay a fee for the sport of $40 to Wicomico County and then in addition must pay to view. I do not mean stadium games, I am talking about at the actual school fields. Currently they charge $4.00 per person for a game. If a family of four wanted to go see one child play that would be $12 for the family . . . at maybe 2 games a week = $50 a month. It hurts my heart when some players have no support because their family cannot afford to watch them. I just wonder who ever implemented this system and why. Years ago it was not this way. When we travel to other counties and states (DE, VA) this doesn't happen.

It just makes no sense to me. You would think the schools and the county would want parental support.

Maryland Delegate Carl Anderton Voted NO On Sanctuary State Bill & More

Early this morning I asked Delegate Anderton how he voted on the Sanctuary State. His reply, "Against it! All of us voted no, except for Sharee. She voted for the bill."

Anderton, Carozza, Otto, Adams & Mautz voted against the bill while Sharee Sample Hughes voted for it.

Does Governor Hogan Have What It Takes To Successfully Veto Any Legislation?

Governor Larry Hogan issued the following statement in response to the Maryland House of Delegates voting for final approval of House Bill 1362, which will directly interfere with the ability of state and local law enforcement to work and cooperate with federal law enforcement authorities:

“The Maryland House of Delegates tonight passed an outrageously irresponsible bill that will make Maryland a sanctuary state and endanger our citizens. This legislation would interfere with our state and local law enforcement's ability to cooperate with federal law enforcement authorities. I will veto this dangerously misguided legislation the moment that it reaches my desk.”

Publishers Notes: OK tough guy, let's see if your veto will be overturned AGAIN and if these are just WORDS. Again, is this how EVERYTHING we don't like or agree with will get passed any more. I mean, what's the point of having a Governor IF he/she has no power to actually represent "we The People". 

Protesters wave Confederate flag next to NCAA arena

GREENVILLE, S.C. —The NCAA released a statement Sunday after members of the South Carolina Secessionist Party flew a large Confederate battle flag next to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville.

The display happened as the NCAA held the final day of the first and second rounds of the men's college basketball tournament in the arena.

The flag was mounted on a pole that was several feet long, anchored in the bed of a pick-up truck that was parked on the top level of a city garage next to the arena.

"I felt like someone had punched me in the gut," said Amy Stromberg, a fan visiting from out of town. "It's very disturbing what that flag represents and I thought in South Carolina we were past that now."

The flag could be seen from miles away.

A Viewer Writes: Local Sears Experience

Joe, this morning I read that Sears is really having financial issues,so let me tell you of an incident I had yesterday. I went into Sears at the Salisbury Mall and was interested in a mower which was approx. $3000 - 4000 dollars. I asked if they offered delivery{about 4 miles away} they said it would be 69.00. So I went somewhere else and believe it or not they would have no problem delivering this to my home. So as a businessman I thought I would tell them what I thought, cause I really like Sears and would hate to see them leave. After talking to at least 3 people to get to the right person, I was amazed at their smugness and rude manner. My last question I asked was - You really don't care and this went on deaf ears didn't it. The rude lady said emphatically, YEP.

Annapolis is Trying to Pull a FAST ONE on US! We need to ACT NOW!

It has come to my attention tonight that Annapolis legislators are doing a sneaky move on the sly by voting (tomorrow but by the time most read this) TODAY (3/20/2017) on Maryland becoming a sanctuary state. This is highly unacceptable for our legislators and a violation, not to mention, dereliction of their duty to represent us, their constituents.

This is unacceptable and should be stopped immediately...

In a last minute call for voting, they have decided to vote today on an issue that can basically alienate us from the Federal Government. Do not let anyone fool you; there is legislation and rules already in place at the Department of Justice to defund all sanctuary cities and states without prejudice. This is highly legal and constitutional because sanctuary areas are in violation of Federal Law which always usurps State Law.

Meaning, even though we're in their backyard, they will defund us immediately without even so much as a second thought and given our proximity, we are a perfect target to be an example for the rest of the country. That means for Marylanders many bad things - including all federal money going to our Law Enforcement Agencies throughout the state - even our colleges and universities will suffer under these rules.

They did this at the last minute like this for a reason... to DECEIVE the public and give NO time for any serious debate! 

If you value having the luxuries of having federal assistance then this proposed bill will kiss all of it goodbye and the Attorney General will be hard pressed to find a sympathetic Supreme Court by the time this case were to get to that level.

This nonsense may be fine and dandy for New York or California but for a state trying to compete for the new FBI headquarters, this is the kiss of death in any prospect of us getting that gig. This is probably the reason why the legislators were trying to get away with voting on this 'quietly;' no fanfare or public debate whatsoever. This is WRONG in every way possible; both legally and ethically on our state government's part.

Great Experience At The Salisbury Motor Vehicle Administration

Without a doubt, one of the worst experiences people tend to have is visiting the Motor Vehicle Administration. However, it was time for me to update my Drivers License this week and I have to say, wow! What a difference.

Every single person working there was extremely kind and yes, even helpful. As I ran into some followers of Salisbury News and enjoyed some great conversations while we waited, even they expressed how nice everyone was. 

So our hat is tipped to ALL of the staff there for making what used to be a dreaded experience into an enjoyable one. 

Vote These S.O.B's. Out Immediately: House of Delegates Passed Sanctuary State Bill

Disappointed to report that the House of Delegates passed a bill tonight by a vote of 83-55 to make Maryland a Sanctuary State. I joined with all 50 House Republicans and 5 Democrats to oppose the bill. Governor Hogan has vowed to veto the bill.

Dog attacks, kills 8-month-old in Md.

WASHINGTON — A family dog fatally mauled an 8-month-old boy in a Lusby, Maryland, home Thursday afternoon.

According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to Prancer Court in Lusby after the attack was reported just after 1 p.m.

Deputies arrived within one minute of the initial call, the department said, and saw the dog still attacking the child. They shot the dog to stop the attack and immediately determined that the boy had died.

Two Delmar High School Students Arrested

Two Delmar High School students were arrested yesterday for Terroristic Threats. More to come.

UPDATE: It turns out the student/s had made threats on social media. Law enforcement simply started an investigation, found the evidence to be factual and immediately arrested at least one student on Thursday to assure no students were in any danger at school on Friday.

After investigating it further law enforcement found these students had no access to any materials that could be used in the on line threat. 

Electoral Map for Election 2016 Per County FINAL

For all the commenters on a prior post, here is a purdy picture to illustrate why your brash statement about Maryland being pure Blue is seriously flawed.

As you can see from the MAP, the large amount of Hillary Clinton votes did not come from the landmass but the people concentrated in urban areas of Maryland. Therefore, the urban areas not the rest of the area sets the tone of who gets the electoral votes. To say that all of Maryland is Blue is incorrect if you weigh number by counties. Hillary Clinton only won by 38,728 votes (not even enough to fill up Merriweather Post twice) because 150,709 voted for Trump, Johnson, Other and Stein.

Hardly a huge amount to warrant that Maryland is True Blue!

You peeps seem to forget, pollsters have access to all these spiffy maps with color coding and such -- as well as anyone smart enough to use Google to SEARCH out the information!

Incidentally, if voter rolls were purged and cleaned of dead people and illegal aliens voting, seriously doubt this map would have as much blue as it has now being that most of the voter fraud is found in urban areas because it's easier to pull off the big heist. Common Sense, kids, is golden!

Malibu votes to be a sanctuary city because without illegals 'no one's houses would be cleaned'

The Los Angeles Times reported Monday morning on Malibu leaders' vote to become a sanctuary city, citing residents explaining that illegals' labor makes possible Malibu's "comfortable lifestyle."

After the city council toiled for hours over the decision to make what amounts to a symbolic gesture (the city contracts its policing to the LA County Sheriff's Department so it follows their policies regarding immigration authorities), the paper quoted sanctuary proponents in the breezy beachside Malibubble.

The Times reported:

"Malibu is about 92% white and one of L.A. County's wealthiest cities. Everyone agrees the city has workers who are not authorized to be in the United States, and they tend to serve the food at upscale eateries, clean the beachside mansions, look after children and keep the landscaping looking lush."

MoCo Council President on Rockville HS gang rape: "Bad things happen"

After hiding from their constituents and the press for four days, Montgomery County elected officials yesterday began to react to the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl by two illegal immigrants at Rockville High School last Thursday. It was notable that County Council President Roger Berliner did not begin his weekly press conference by making a statement about the incident, which is foremost on the minds of county residents and parents. Only after being asked about the rape by a reporter, did Berliner comment. "Bad things happen," he suggested at one point.

Asked about the hot topic of why adults (the accused rapists are 17 and 18) are allowed to enroll as ninth-graders in Montgomery County Public Schools, Berliner endorsed the idea as a sound education policy for those with poor English skills.

In regard to the County's de facto sanctuary policies regarding citizenship status, a reporter asked if officials thought the incident should bring those policies into question now. Berliner disputed that idea in a puzzling way, asserting that the rape incident "reinforces why Montgomery County does what it does."

Sunday Hunting Bill Passes In Wicomico County

While Worcester County and Somerset County have enjoyed hunting on Sunday's, Wicomico County had not allowed hunting on Sunday's, until last night.

Room tax increase coming?

Raising Ocean City’s room tax is apparently on the minds of some Ocean City officials, as they started a long discussion on raising it, but industry members cautioned that doing so could alienate its customer base and resort hotels.

During Monday’s Tourism Commission, Councilwoman Mary Knight sought the opinions of the Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association and the Ocean City Chamber of Commence on raising the room tax from 4.5 percent to 5 percent by summer 2018.

Wildwood and Myrtle Beach have 13 percent room tax, she said, while Atlantic City has the same tax plus a $5 per night charge and Virginia Beach has a 14 percent tax and a $2 per night charge.

“We feel that it wouldn’t hurt competitively,” Knight said. She added that the city’s staffing levels remain significantly less than they were when the room tax took effect in 2009, while the city’s revenues also declined despite the need to maintain the same levels of service.

Hogan’s deep popularity in Md. weakens when voters consider 2018, Post poll finds

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s stratospheric approval rating has slipped for the first time since the Republican took office, a new Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds, while voter skepticism of President Trump and his party threatens to complicate the governor’s bid for reelection next year.

Hogan holds a 65 percent job approval rating, down from a high of 71 percent last September, but still above the highest mark in Post polls for each of the state’s three previous governors.

Yet Hogan’s support for reelection lags far behind his approval rating, with 41 percent of registered voters saying they would support him for a second term and 37 percent preferring a Democrat.

The margin has narrowed since September, when Hogan held a 46 to 30 percent edge over a generic Democrat. No Democratic candidate has entered the 2018 race so far, though several have said they are considering it.

13 Staggering Photos Of An Abandoned Mental Hospital Hiding In Maryland

There’s no shortage of abandoned places in Maryland and today we’re featuring one that’s among the most disturbing. This facility dates all the way back to 1911, when it opened as the Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland. At that time, the facility seemed promising, vowing to care for and treat African American patients who otherwise were jailed for showing psychotic tendencies. They Moved To D.C., Not Maryland

SFD: House Fire 300 blk Maryland Ave

  Around 1700 hrs, all three salisbury stations along with station 3(Fruitland) were alerted for the report of a house on fire. The deputy chief(Scott) went on scene with a 3 story single family, with smoke showing from the second and third floors. Engine 16 arrived side A and immediately recognized an issue, the closest hydrant was a little over a block away. A split second decision was made to improvise, deploying a line and tactic better known as a "bundle load". The lineman disconnected and pulled the 250' preconnect, while the driver retrieved his gated "Y" connecting it to his 3" supply line and dropped it with his officer in the front yard. The engine then reverse laid to the closest hydrant, approx 350' away. Trucks 2 and 1 arrived simultaneously positioning respectively on opposite sides of the house. Crews gained entry, searched all floors as they went, located a kitchen fire on the second floor and extinguished the same. Call was placed under control in approx 40 minutes. No injuries were reported. Scene turned over to the Maryland state fire inspector for investigation.

Proposed House Bill Would Put A Yearlong Freeze On Selling Homes To Settle Unpaid Water Bills

Maryland’s low-income are struggling to pay their water bills, with rate increases being the driving factor. On Saturday, the House of Delegates approved a legislation that would give Marylanders, who owe unpaid water bills a year’s reprieve from threat of having their homes sold.

The legislation would have a major impact in Baltimore, but would apply statewide. The practice of selling someone’s home, when they fail to pay their bill would be suspended for a full year.

The House also passed a related bill that would organize a task force to research new ways of enforcing people to pay their water charges without seizing their home.

With increasing rates, low-income Baltimoreans are finding it more difficult to afford the water bills. In 2016, over 315 owner-occupied properties were sent to tax sale due to unpaid water bills.

Democrats in House of Delegates Vote to Force Landlords to Accept Section 8

House Bill 172, "The Home Act of 2017" also known as the "Forced Section 8 Bill" passed the Maryland House of Delegates 88-53 with 3 Democrats joining all 50 Republicans to vote against the bill. This bill will force many landlords to accept Section 8 vouchers or risk being arrested.

The bill would force an owner of an apartment complex to rent 15% of all apartment units to people receiving housing vouchers and would actively look to place people with Section 8 vouchers in zip codes where there currently aren't many people using vouchers.

The bill now heads to the Senate where it has been cross-filed as SB 314. Democratic Senators Bobby Zirkin and Jim Brochin are likely to be the deciding votes in the Senate on this bill.

Federal judge who blocked travel ban receiving threatening messages, FBI says

A Hawaii federal judge who ruled against President Donald Trump's revised travel ban has been the target of threatening messages, the FBI says.

US District Judge Derrick Watson's ruling last week resulted in a temporary restraining order nationwide -- hours before the revised travel ban was set to go into effect.

In the 43-page ruling, Watson concluded that the new executive order failed to pass legal muster, and the state had established "a strong likelihood of success" on their claims of religious discrimination.

Watson, who presides in Honolulu, has received threatening messages since the ruling. FBI spokeswoman Michele Ernst said the agency is aware of the situation and prepared to assist.

Washington Post Reports Immigrants Are ‘Going Hungry’ Because of Trump

The Washington Post‘s Wonkblog reported Thursday that immigrants in the United States are increasingly going hungry because of President Donald Trump, while offering no evidence to show that is actually the case.

The Post‘s headline was unambiguous: "Immigrants are going hungry so Trump won't deport them." The premise of the story is that legal immigrants who receive federal food stamps are abandoning the SNAP program for fear that Trump might use it to locate and deport them.

The story is based largely on quotes from activists and SNAP officials who worry that is the case. But missing from the story are any statistics showing SNAP usage decreasing nationwide, or any statements from immigrants who had left the program.

Bill to limit discipline for young Md. students passes Senate

WASHINGTON — Legislation that would limit how often young students in Maryland are suspended and expelled from school advanced through the state Senate Wednesday, and now it appears it will likely pass through the General Assembly.

The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 32 to 15 — a veto-proof majority.

It would effectively prohibit the practice of suspending or expelling public school students in pre-K through second grade, with a handful of exceptions.

The House of Delegates passed similar legislation by a veto-proof margin, and will likely reach a compromise with the Senate for final approval.

Radio traffic, news details & new pictures from overturned tanker

According to SouthernMD WX & News, two firefighters were injured when Tanker 5 from the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department in Calvert County, Maryland overturned this (Saturday) morning.

It happened on Robinson road while the rig was responding. The site says one firefighter was flown out by helicopter and the other went by ground to Calvert Memorial Hospital.

Montgomery Co. officials vow to work with ICE in school rape case

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Following last week’s brutal rape at Rockville High School, Montgomery County officials are promising to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Evidently, both accused attackers are subjects of possible deportation. But despite the county’s promises, there are questions over its policy when it comes to federal immigration enforcement.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says news of the violent rape in a school restroom on Thursday made him feel “sick and disgusted,” and, in a written statement, Leggett said that following any criminal conviction and sentencing on the charges, “the county — consistent with our long-standing policy — will cooperate fully with ICE to see that the two are deported to their countries of origin.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says a detainer has been lodged against Henry Sanchez, 18, who is a citizen of Guatemala. It would not discuss the immigration status of the second student suspect Jose Montano, 17, because he’s a minor. But Leggett’s statement says both individuals have ICE orders against them.

Stunning percentage of U.S. school students are illegal aliens

A recent report by the Center for Immigration Studies revealed that children of immigrants, many in the United States illegally, compose the majority of the student population in 700 of the country’s largest school areas.

The report, compiled using Census Bureau statistics and Google Maps, exposed an unexpected trend that is reshaping education and society in America.

In areas including northern Virginia, Houston, and New York City, 93 percent of all students are the children of immigrants.

“The number of children from immigrant households in schools is now so high in some areas that it raises profound questions about assimilation,” the report noted.

“What’s more, immigration has added enormously to the number of public school students who are in poverty and the number who speak a foreign language. This cannot help but to create significant challenges for schools, often in areas already struggling to educate students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The report disclosed city and county numbers in the “Public Use Micro Areas” used in Census studies, and focused on those with 20,600 students or more.

Attorney for suspect in Maryland school rape case says client is wrongly accused

Henry Sanchez Milian, one of two suspects charged in the rape of a 14-year-old girl in a bathroom at a Maryland high school did not do what he is accused of, his defense attorney said Wednesday.

“Based on everything we know, we think he’s innocent,” said Andrew Jezic, who has been retained by Sanchez Milian’s family. “This appears to have been a consensual encounter.”

Jezic said his 18-year-old client is confident he will be exonerated.

An arrest warrant filed against Sanchez Milian and signed by a police detective — as well as a similar warrant against a co-defendant, Jose Montano, 17, who has been charged as an adult — describe a brutal series of sexual assaults inside a bathroom stall at Rockville High School on Thursday morning by the suspects, both 9th graders at the school.

Md. Governor calls out MCPS' 'lack of cooperation' in Rockville High rape case

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland Governor Larry Hogan blasted Montgomery County Public Schools officials Tuesday, demanding that the district turn over information about what led to the rape of a 14-year-old girl in the bathroom at Rockville High School last week.

So far, Montgomery County officials have refused to provide information to both the governor’s officer and the state Board of Education. It’s rare to hear Governor Hogan as angry as he was about this story. He is angry, and he says it’s with good reason.

It’s been five days since the rape took place at Rockville High School. The public often has to press for answers from public officials, but in this case, Governor Hogan says he is beyond frustrated—just like everyone else. As he watched coverage of the story on FOX 5 Monday night, he shared many of the same questions we posed about the attack, but the public weren’t alone in not getting responses.

In Wake of Rockville Rape, School Superintendent Accuses Parents of Racism

In the wake of an alleged brutal rape at Rockville High School in Maryland by two illegal aliens last week, Montgomery County Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith is accusing parents of racism and xenophobia. He also claims threats are being made against students and schools.

"While I know this tragic incident has become part of a national political debate, I want to remind community members that the lives of real students have been forever affected," Smith sent in an email Thursday morning. "While many have chosen to engage civilly in the conversation, far too many have crossed the line with racist, xenophobic calls and emails. MCPS is working with law enforcement to identify those who are making threats toward our students and schools. This behavior will not be tolerated in our community."

Nowhere in the email was it mentioned the suspects are in the country illegally, with at least one facing deportation.

Parents have been protesting outside of Smith's office in recent days and did not mince words about the situation during a public meeting Tuesday night. One parent said he took his daughter out of school last year because of an unsafe environment.

Phila. Pepsi pulls 12 pack / 2 Liters from Shelves over Tax

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pepsi is pulling 2-liter bottles and 12-packs of its products from Philadelphia grocery store shelves over the city's new tax on sweetened drinks.

The company says it wants to offer products and package sizes working families can better afford.

The 1.5-cent-per-ounce tax on sweetened and diet beverages is imposed at the distributor level. If fully passed on to the consumer it amounts to $1.44 on a six-pack of 16-ounce bottles.

The company's decision affects sodas including Pepsi and Mountain Dew and other sweetened drinks like Gatorade and Lipton Iced Tea.

Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney's office says the industry was trending toward smaller sizes well before the tax passed.

Officials vote to ban tents, canopies from Rehoboth Beach

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) - Visitors will soon no longer be allowed to bring tents and canopies to Rehoboth Beach.

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance Friday banning those temporary structures from the beach, starting May 15. It also bans campfires and grills.

City officials say umbrellas no larger than 8 feet in diameter and no greater than 7-feet, 6-inches in height, are still allowed as well as baby tents designed to shade infants and small children.

Federal workers may get pay raise

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has made a point, on the campaign trail and in the White House, to say he wants to cut spending and limit the size of the federal government. But his administration still plans on giving federal employees a raise, according to The Washington Post.

Citing a senior budget official, the Post reports the Trump administration will recommend a 1.9 percent raise for federal workers that would be scheduled to take effect in January.

“It is in line with what usually federal employees would have seen as their raise,” said Eric White of Federal News Radio, WTOP’s sister station.

The potential raise was not included in the Trump administration’s proposed budget that was released last week. However, the newspaper reports federal agencies have been told by the White House to build the raise into their spending plans for the fiscal year that starts in October.

Major federal employee unions, such as the American Federation of Government Employees, have been critical of the 1.9 percent figure. They said it should be larger, considering the billions in cuts to federal worker pay and benefits that have occurred since 2010.

Maryland House passes bill to ban discrimination against voucher holders

The House of Delegates passed a bill Monday night that would prevent landlords from refusing to lease a home to a person merely because they have a government voucher to help pay their rent.

The bill is designed to give holders of Housing Choice Vouchers — often referred to as theSection 8 program — and other recipients of government aid more choice about where they live and help them move to more affluent areas.

It passed on a 88-53 vote.

The issue is especially controversial in Baltimore County, where voucher users are concentrated in both eastern and western neighborhoods and where some residents blame government subsidized housing for pockets of high crime.

"We have a lot of areas with a lot of section 8 that have become areas of high crime that we struggle to fix," said Del. Robin L. Grammer, a Republican who represents eastern Baltimore County.

Harris A No On GOP Health Bill Without Changes

Maryland's lone Republican in Washington is a no on his party's health care reforms unless it gets some big changes.

"I was a big Trump supporter, I voted for Trump, but I'm not yet with this bill because we don't have the protections that will lower premiums," Cockeysville Rep. Andy Harris told C4 Thursday.

Harris, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, says the American Health Care Act maintains in spirit the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate and essential health benefits. Harris said the latter is driving skyrocketing insurance premiums. Insurers are required to offer coverage for checkups, prescriptions, maternity and mental health, among other things.

"We're just trying to figure out how we get that added into the bill because without that in the bill they don't have a majority of freedom caucus votes, they can't possibly pass it," Harris said.

Later Thursday, the Freedom Caucus deadlocked with the White House after they failed to extract the changes they wanted made.
