Ford At Greater Risk Of Strike After Avoiding Bailout Money

It may seem a cruel irony that the one U.S. automaker that took no bailout money is now at greater risk of a national strike as it continues labor negotiations with union leaders.

Based upon initial tallies last week, rank and file Ford United Auto Worker members were leaning overwhelmingly toward a national strike authorization against their employer. With the current national labor contracts set to expire September 14 at General Motors, Chrysler and Ford, local union representatives at Ford were reporting 97 percent of their membership was voting to authorize a strike, if necessary.

Did Wicomico County Hire A Second States Attorney?

While many have stated they would love to clone Sheriff Mike Lewis, I really don't think Matt Maciarello has done anything yet to the caliber of a Mike Lewis, yet he does have one up on Mike, he's got two spaces recently converted at the GOB for personal parking.

There were two meters in this location and as I know the former States Attorney Davis Ruark tried for more than 20 years to get a single space for his vehicle, former Mayor Barrie Tilghman wouldn't have any of it.

I personally think they should close off that parking lot to any and all City and County Executive level employees, police officers and leave only handicap parking for the general public. They did build a garage across the street and they do have a two hour free parking lot.

Will there be a sign going up soon for two spaces for the County Executive? You could say one is for parking and the other is for ego. LOL

Fate Of Frisky's 22 Monkeys At Stake In Board Of Appeals Case

The fate of about two dozen monkeys at Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary in Woodstock is nearing a conclusion after more than a decade of legal battles.

In 1999, following an anonymous complaint, county zoning officials cited Frisky's owner Colleen Layton for operating a charity without the appropriate zoning exception. In 2004, the Howard County Board of Appeals granted her the zoning exception under the condition she got rid of the roughly 30 monkeys she housed at Frisky's.

Though some have since died, 22 monkeys remain at Frisky's, while the sanctuary has spent the past seven years fighting the board's decision.

Romney Unveils Economic Plan Tuesday

(NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.) — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Tuesday will call for lowering the corporate tax rate and eliminating capital gains taxes for middle-class Americans as part of a plan to try to lift the struggling economy as well as create jobs.

Romney will detail 59 specific proposals aimed at fixing the nation's stubbornly high unemployment rate, now at 9.1 percent. He gave a broad outline of his 160-page plan in a Tuesday morning opinion piece in USA Today and was to speak later in the day at McCandless International Trucks.

Man Killed In Plane Collision With Girlfriend

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A pilot was communicating by radio with her boyfriend before their planes collided in the air over Alaska last week, killing him, a federal investigator said.

The two pilots took off from different western Alaska villages Friday but met up in the air on the way to Bethel, Alaska, National Transportation Safety Board investigator Clint Johnson told the Anchorage Daily News Sunday.

Kristen Sprague, 26, was flying a Cessna 207 operated by rural freight carrier Ryan Air, according to Alaska State Troopers. She made an emergency landing with one airplane wing seriously damaged and wasn't hurt.

The other plane, a Cessna 208 Caravan, crashed and burst into flames Friday at about 1:30 p.m. local time near the village of Nightmute, Alaska, about 400 miles (640 kilometers) west of Anchorage, Alaska, killing Scott Veal, 24, of Kenai, Alaska. Each was the only person onboard.

Caroline Man, 36, Fatally Stabbed

Stepfather, 59, charged with second-degree murder

FEDERALSBURG Samuel Anthony Johnson Jr., 36, of Federalsburg, died Friday after his stepfather allegedly stabbed him several times during an argument.

Homer James Smith, 59, of 2940 Mowbray Creek Road, Federalsburg, faces one count each of second-murder, manslaughter, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. He is held without bond in the Caroline County Detention Center.

21-Foot Monster Crocodile Caught

Wildlife authorities in the Philippines say they have captured a 21-foot-long, 2,370-pound saltwater crocodile, thought to be the largest creature of its kind now in captivity.

The croc was captured in Agusan del Sur marsh on the southern Philippine island of Mindinao, according to a report on GMA News. Hunters had been trying to capture it for 21 days, the report said. It was finally captured on Saturday by a team of about 30 men who used meat to bait it and an eight millimeter metal cable to snare it, according to an Agence-France Presse report on ABS.CBN News.

A few hundred years ago, some rather courageous men and women decided that they’d had enough of living under someone else’s rule– that the right of self-determination was stronger than any benefit or protection from living under a corrupt government.

The US Declaration of Independence eloquently posed the colonists’ grievances against King George III, including among others, that he had:

“erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance;”

“obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers;”
“[deprived] us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury”

The Constitution was supposed to address all of these grievances as the Founding Fathers sought to create a government where no single branch or office had too much power. Even to this day, US government officials swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies– foreign and domestic.

My guess is that most of them haven’t bothered to read it.

Sinepuxent Receipts - 09/06/2011

Another summer treat enjoyed by many is Hokey Pokey. A friend from work shared his favorite version. I would suggest serving them in a sealable sandwich bag as they have a tendency to melt fast.

Hokey Pokey

1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk

¼ tsp. cream of tartar

2 cups milk

1 can Big Red Soda

Beat together the first two ingredients very well with wire whisk attachment. Slowly blend in milk and soda and then pour in 9” square pan. Freeze solid; cut into squares. Then wrap in waxed paper and return to freezer until served.

Another variation is substituting a can of Cream Soda for the Big Red Soda.

President 'is no longer the favorite to win re-election,' Democratic pollster says

When Barack Obama unveils his jobs and economic plan to a joint session of Congress on Thursday, he'll do so at the lowest point of his presidency, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

After the bruising debt-ceiling fight — as well as Standard & Poor's subsequent downgrade of the nation's credit rating — Obama's job approval rating has sunk to a low of 44 percent, a 3-point drop since July. His handling of the economy stands at a low of 37 percent. And only 19 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction, the lowest mark for this president.

Perhaps most ominously for Obama, a majority of poll takers — 54 percent — think he's facing a longer-term setback from which he's unlikely to recover. Back in January, just 39 percent agreed with that assessment.

Indeed, that 54 percent is virtually identical to George W. Bush's score on the same question in the Nov. 2005 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which was released just months after Bush's widely criticized handling of Hurricane Katrina.

Rick Perry’s emergence as the front runner for the Republican Presidential nomination would seem like a coup for the gun industry. The Texas governor’s enthusiasm for firearms rivals Yosemite Sam’s. He has an A+ rating from the Texas State Rifle Association and packs a laser-sighted Ruger pistol when he jogs. Last year, he famously shot a coyote that threatened his dog during a run.

To commemorate his act of valor, the manufacturer, Sturm, Ruger & Co., produced a lightweight, limited-edition “Coyote Special” with the words “A True Texan” emblazoned on the barrel. Collectors snapped them up. Perry would be as ardent a champion of gun rights as has ever occupied the White House.

Influenza A has picked up a gene from the H1N1 pandemic strain, CDC says

Two more cases of a new strain of swine flu were confirmed Monday by Pennsylvania officials. Both are connected to an agricultural fair in southwestern Pennsylvania and bring the total number of cases reported to date to four.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported two infections of the novel influenza A virus. One involved an Indiana boy and the other was a girl from Pennsylvania who had been to the Washington County Fair the week of Aug. 13-20, the same fair attended by those in the two newest cases.

All of those who have fallen ill were children. Those whose illnesses were reported Friday have fully recovered and those whose cases were reported Monday are also recovering, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Feds Warn Of Small Airplane Terror Threats

WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI and Homeland Security have issued a nationwide warning about al-Qaida threats to small airplanes, just days before the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Authorities say there is no specific or credible terrorist threat for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. But they have stepped up security nationwide as a precaution.

According to a five-page law enforcement bulletin issued Friday, as recently as early this year, al-Qaida was considering ways to attack airplanes.

The alert, issued ahead of the summer's last busy travel weekend, said terrorists have considered renting private planes and loading them with explosives.

What?! Below is an excerpt from the New York Times. No wonder they are losing readers. With thinking like this, we might as well hand the United States of America over to the Middle East. Letting Muslims and people of other cults practice voluntary ecclesiastical law within their communities is one thing. Muslims wants Shariah law to be the law of the land. State governments are getting smart and shoring up their laws to prevent the courts from forcing Sharia law on American citizens. The New York Times should implement Sharia law upon its employees before letting them write articles like this.

Some of these efforts would curtail Muslims from settling disputes over dietary laws and marriage through religious arbitration, while others would go even further in stigmatizing Islamic life: a bill recently passed by the Tennessee General Assembly equates Shariah with a set of rules that promote “the destruction of the national existence of the United States.”

Lewis Gone, But Telethon Brings In More Than '10

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Even without Jerry Lewis, the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon posted its best gain since the recession started, though the program's longtime host was on the minds of many during the 46th annual fundraiser.

"American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said after co-hosting Sunday's program that he's sorry the famed comedian didn't participate, but the organization needs to move on to ensure the fundraiser continues.

The telethon raised nearly $61.5 million Sunday, an increase of about $2.6 million over last year, MDA officials said.

Delmar High; what’s up? As most of you know I grew up in Delmar and am a great fan of the town and school. Now that we have moved back there I’m trying to pay more attention. My cousin Greg shared with me something I need more information on, so if you are out there and know this share with me the answer. During the storm I wondered why the High School was not used as a shelter for those who needed it? I am told it was not built to code for that. If not why not? In my mind all schools should be built to be multi functional , we pay taxes for that building, and so do many people in all towns of the state, help pay for their schools. There are a lot of retired people in the state who also continue to pay taxes without kids in school. Should they not be able to use the school in case of an emergency? I for one think YES! So if anyone out there knows this is true please let me know why!

First of all I still can’t believe there are still many people who do not know what a Doctor of Chiropractic does. First, most people don’t realize chiropractic school and medical school is the same length of time. Yes that is correct, so then where is the difference? After the diagnosis. Medicine has basically three answers for your problem. 1) drugs 2)inject you 3) cut you. Now again I’m not anti drugs or surgery but our philosophy is let’s try the most natural approach first. After our diagnosis we adjust ( bring the body back to it’s most neutral position to allow the body to heal itself), next we look at your stress, your nutrition, along with pH, how much water you are drinking, and what type of exercise you do. Our goal is to not only get rid of the symptom but to bring your body back to health. Does this science work? Well we have had five different MD’s work with us and they all continue to refer us patience as well as much of the “educated” medical community whom I have worked with over the years. Now let’s look behind the curtain. There is a group who are trying to add drugs to what a Doctor of Chiropractic can do. Let me be clear I am 100% against this as well as is most of our profession. So if you MD”S out there see any legislation out there about this please let me know because I will be happy to do what I can to end it! Why? First it is not in the art, science, or philosophy of a Doctor of Chiropractic. In my assumption it would water down what we do. Politics: Man I get tired of this! One of the liberal T.V. shows started this thing with Rush again. From the start of Obama reign Rush has said He hopes Obama fails. I for one have been in agreement. NOW PAY ATTENTION, I wanted him to fail and yes as Rush explained because we don’t want the economy to decline. Has it over three years? Hard to continue to blame Bush this far out. Do you want employment for Americans who are black? It is about 51% unemployment for Americans who are black, we don’t want that , do you? Throwing money to union companies for so called stimulus money. Seems most unions pay their union dues to re elect Democrats, I don’t like that and have not seen where my tax dollars have made this country one bit better over three years. It has been said many times our disagreement with Obama is not just because he is black but they insinuate that is certainly one of the reasons. Yes, I agree there were probably some uneducated people who did and who did not vote for him because he is black! Please don’t put people like me in that category! I don’t like big government, don’t confuse this with no government. As for segregation the only kind I am for is you are an American or you are not! I can go on but lack of space stops me. If you are conservative want smaller government, want all to be equal, then take time to get to know us, you may be surprised! Stop segregating this country! I believe it seems race issues have been worse with this president then in the 60’s and 70’s! Let all American’s stop this! Can I get an oh me or an AMEN! Stand up and REPRESENT America!

Breast Cancer Survivors Kayak At Killens Pond Sept. 12

Breast cancer survivors in Delaware have plenty of opportunities to attend support groups, but one unique program goes outside four walls. The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Nurture With Nature program allows breast cancer survivors to come together and experience nature by hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, looking at constellations and many more outdoor activities.

DBCC has an upcoming Nurture With Nature kayak outing for breast cancer survivors starting at 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12, at Killens Pond State Park in Felton. Here, survivors can see lily pads, basking turtles, beavers and deer. No experience is necessary. There are tandem kayaks for those who wish to kayak with someone else. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Transportation is available from DBCC’s Dover and Lewes offices on a first-come, first-serve basis. Indiana College Bans "Too Violent" National Anthem

Tiny Goshen College in Indiana has banned the "The Star Spangled Banner: at all sporting events because the Mennonite school's president considers the National Anthem's words to be too violent.

The 1,000-student school had already banned the words last year, but the band could still play the music for patriots in attendance. Now, the school has banned the song entirely, according to NBC Sports.

The school’s board of directors told college President Jim Brenneman to “find an alternative to playing the National Anthem that fits with sports tradition, that honors country and that resonates with Goshen College’s core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.”

Brenneman was okay with that.

“I am committed to retaining the best of what it means to be a Mennonite college, while opening the doors wider to all who share our core values,” Brenneman said. “And I invite others to join us at Goshen College as we make peace in all of its forms, even with the national anthem.”

On a big day in presidential politics, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday gave another of her presidential-stump-like speeches to a presidential-rally-style crowd in an important presidential primary state. She did not say she's running for president. Again.

"It's great to spend Labor Day with you," Palin told a large crowd of tea party supporters in Manchester, N.H., on the traditional kick off day of the presidential primary season. "You could be grilling up some steaks with your neighbors and instead, youíre concerned about your country and taking a stand."

A Vineyard Too Far

By Sunday afternoon, the Gallup tracking poll showed a 17-point spread in the president’s approval rating — 38 percent approval to 55 percent disapproval. Such polls are fickle and can go up and down quickly, often depending on unwarranted and unfair perceptions and media hype, hinging on everything from hurricanes to killing bin Laden. That said, these recent abysmal numbers might suggest that for the first time, a considerable number of Americans are starting to be turned off not just by Barack Obama’s economic policies, but by Barack Obama himself. But why now?

The president’s latest Martha’s Vineyard vacation was a public-relations disaster, wholly unnecessary, and in part responsible for Obama’s most recent slide in the polls. Part of the problem was purely coincidental and no one’s fault: Who could have expected that while the president of the United States was resting on an exclusive private beach on a tony island on a calm August day, millions of Eastern Seaboarders around him would be engaged in a media-driven frenzy of emergency preparation and evacuation?

Yet most of the negative perception was the president’s own doing. For nearly three years, there has been something strange about the First Family’s ritzy getaway tastes. The annual Martha’s Vineyard rentals were bookended by First Family junkets to Vail, Costa del Sol, and Hawaii. The choice of venues spawned at least three problems for the president that have nothing to do with the First Family’s right, and indeed duty, to enjoy a little well-earned vacation time — or with the fact that other presidents have vacationed in nice places.

First, Obama’s fiery rhetoric (“fat-cat bankers,” “corporate jets,” “millionaires and billionaires,” “redistributive change,” “at a certain point you’ve made enough money,” etc.) has demonized the better off. Many successful liberal presidents do that, but they finesse the necessary fundraising and schmoozing with Wall Street zillionaires with tact and discretion. Bill Clinton was a past master at gluing a populist veneer atop his deep fascination with old money and hip celebrity. The Obamas are far clumsier in both their class-warfare boilerplate and their overt elite tastes, whose contradictions they apparently either miss or don’t much care about.

Forty heavily-armed members of the Bergen County Police Department SWAT team surrounded a New Jersey home after responding to a caller who claimed he had already killed four people and had taken several hostages inside the house.

After a tense three hours, the police commander on the scene gave the order and the elite SWAT unit tossed tear gas grenades into the home before rushing in, guns drawn in preparation for a fire fight. But inside they found no dead bodies, no hostages and no madman -- just a cat.

Rehoboth Ranks No. 4 For Same-Sex Couples

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) - Rehoboth is among the Top 5 small cities for same-sex couples, according to a study based on U.S. Census Bureau data.

Rehoboth ranked fourth among cities with populations under 100,000 with 106.87 couples per capita, according to a report published by the Williams Institute, a national sexual orientation law and public policy think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"Particularly among smaller cities, the data reflects that the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) community has dispersed beyond traditional enclaves. As social stigma eases, couples are more comfortable coming out, and a generation of aging and out same-sex couples begin to retire," Gary Gates, a Williams Institute demographer, said in a written statement.

"People my age were much more hesitant to be open and say they were in a same-sex relationship," said Steve Elkins, 61, the executive director of CAMP Rehoboth and editor of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth.

Maryland Libraries Evolve Into Community Spaces

BALTIMORE - Libraries across Maryland are reinventing themselves from the silent, stuffy archives to be more inviting for patrons to meet, read and even snack.

This month, Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library system is opening its first small eatery in a neighborhood branch. The Baltimore Sun reports ( http://bsun.md/nvsnyE) the Southeast Anchor branch will get a David and Dad's café. When it was first built in 2007, officials considered tapping into the popularity of coffee shops in bookstores.

Obama: Times Are Tough "But We're Tougher"

DETROIT - President Barack Obama called for an end to "Washington games" and for Congressional Republicans to support initiatives to promote job creation benefiting the middle class.

Speaking to a Labor Day rally in Detroit, a city he said had been "to heck and back," Mr. Obama challenged Congressional Republicans to put the country ahead of party.

In a preview of his speech Thursday to a joint session of Congress, Mr. Obama proposed boosting construction and infrastructure projects - and included some finger-wagging at critics. "We have more than one million unemployed construction workers ready to get dirty right now," he said. "Labor's on board and businesses [are] on board. We just need Congress to get on board."

NARRATIVE: On September 5, 2011 Deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriffs’ Office responded to the Allen Road area of Allen, MD for report of a missing 56 y.o.a. White/Female. The Wicomico Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation and is asking for the assistance of the public.

The missing person is described as a white female 56 years of age, 5’9" 175 lbs, Blue eyes, Brown hair and was last seen wearing a yellow shirt with images of cats on the front, Blue shorts and sandal type shoes. The missing person was last reported to be en-route to Wal-Mart Fruitland. The missing person’s vehicle was located in the area. The photo of the vehicle above is an actual photo of the missing person’s vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the WBI at 410-548-4898 of the Sheriffs’ Office at 410-548-4891.

Busting The Union Busters

This is not a very happy Labor Day for labor, considering the continued heavy attacks on public-employee unions, which have become the vanguard of organized labor. More than one-third of public employees are now in unions, while only about 7 percent of private-sector-workers are unionized.

Probably nothing could be more damaging to the labor movement in general than the attempts by anti-union forces to weaken unions at all levels of government by trying to limit - if not withdraw - their collective bargaining rights and right to strike, in addition to unilaterally cutting the pay and pensions, health care, and other benefits their unions have won in bargaining.

Although that's all been done in the name of budget balancing, it's more accurately described as union busting, spurred on by the steady increase in public-employee union members, even as the number of private-sector unionists has been declining.

It hasn't helped unions, either, that President Obama has turned out to be far less friendly to labor than he'd promised while securing lots of union money and lots of union supporters to help him win the presidency. Ironically, the key role unions played in Obama's election has led to moves by anti-union forces to try to also weaken unions' political rights.

Balloon Entertainer Traveled To Florida For Sex With A 14-Year-Old Boy

A Baltimore balloon entertainer faces up to 10 years in prison after signing a plea agreement in which he admitted traveling to Lake County for sex with a 14-year-old boy he found through an Internet personal ad.

A Lake sheriff's detective, part of an operation probing the Internet for sexual stalkers of children, placed the ad on Craigslist in the Orlando-area "Men Seeking Men" section. It was labeled "bored nephew."

In the agreement, filed in federal court in Orlando, Howard Scott Kalin, 48, a lawyer and owner of Funhouse Entertainment Agency in Baltimore, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity. He is scheduled to appear Sept. 14 before Chief Judge Anne C.Conway.

Discharged For Being Gay, Veterans Seek To Re-enlist

They lived shadow lives in the military, afraid that disclosure of their sexuality would ruin carefully plotted careers. Many were deeply humiliated by drawn-out investigations and unceremonious discharges.

Yet despite their bitter partings with the armed forces, many gay men and lesbians who were discharged under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy say they want to rejoin the service, drawn by a life they miss or stable pay and benefits they could not find in civilian life.

By some estimates, hundreds of gay men and lesbians among the more than 13,000 who were discharged under the policy have contacted recruiters or advocacy groups saying they want to re-enlist after the policy is repealed on Sept. 20.

Bleu Copas is one. He had been in the Army for just three years when someone sent an anonymous e-mail to his commanders telling them he was gay. After he was discharged in 2006 under “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the military’s ban on openly gay troops, “It took away all my value as a person,” he recalled.

Michael Almy is another. When the Air Force began its investigation into whether he was gay, it suspended his security clearance and relieved him of his command. On his final day in service in 2006, police officers escorted him to the gate. “It left kind of a bitter taste,” he said.

Bush: No Sense Of Jubilation About Bin Laden's Death

(CNN) -- Former President George W. Bush says he experienced no pleasure when he heard about the death of Osama bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader responsible for orchestrating the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

"He was sitting in a restaurant in Dallas when the Secret Service told him that President (Barack) Obama wanted to speak to him. He then learned about the assassination," documentarian Peter Schnall told CNN in an interview set to air Monday.Bush "said to us certainly there was no sense of jubilation (and) certainly no sense of happiness," Schnall stressed. "If anything, he felt that finally there was a sense of closure."

One Member Down, Two To Go

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) has filed her 2011 personal financial disclosure, dropping the number of members of Congress who have yet to file down to two.

Freshmen Reps. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) and Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) are the only lawmakers who do not have filings available through the House or Senate public records offices. All other members of the House of Representatives and Senate have filed their 2011 annual disclosures.

Most financial disclosure forms were due in mid-May for members of Congress and senior staff, but individuals could request extensions of up to 90 days. Twenty senators and 75 represenatives requested extensions in May, with about half of those filing by mid-July.

Why Muslims Are Still Mad At America

On the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, many Americans are wondering whether the risk of a terrorist attack against America has been reduced. The picture is mixed. With the death of Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda is weaker. With revolutions in several Arab countries, frustrations with unpopular autocratic governments — a recruiting theme for terrorist groups - have been mitigated. But one important contributing factor has not improved - widespread anger at America in the Muslim world. While views have improved in Indonesia, throughout the Middle East and South Asia, hostility toward the United States persists unabated.

This does not mean that most Muslims support terrorist attacks on America. On the contrary, overwhelming majorities reject terrorism, including the 9/11 attacks, as morally wrong. Al Qaeda is quite unpopular.
