Salisbury Tops Stevenson In OT To Earn Title Shot In Men’s NCAA Lacrosse Tournament
SALISBURY, Md. – A weather delay couldn't dampen the spirits of the fans at the Salisbury University men's lacrosse team's semifinal match against Stevenson University on Sunday afternoon as the Sea Gulls brought on a storm of their own, defeating the Mustangs 14-13 in overtime to advance to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship game.
Stevenson (19-2) struck first in the highly physical game, scoring on an extra-man opportunity just 1:26 into the contest. The maroon and gold answered back just over a minute later as sophomore attackman Matt Cannone (Bayport, N.Y.) scored his 49th goal of the season. Just 40 seconds later, senior attackman Mike Winter (Port Washington, N.Y.) gave the Gulls (21-1) their first lead of the game as he netted his 49th goal of the year.
The Mustangs would score again shortly thereafter to knot up the game at two apiece; it would mark the first of four times that the game would be tied in the first half. The Sea Gulls' one-goal deficit at the end of the first quarter turned into a one-goal lead at the half as Salisbury outscored Stevenson 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-6 edge at halftime.
When inclement weather hit the area in the third quarter with 13:32 left to play, Salisbury held an 8-6 advantage over Stevenson. When play resumed 45 minutes later, Salisbury wasted no time extending its lead to three goals as sophomore midfielder Sam Bradman (Canton, N.Y.) netted an unassisted score.
The Mustangs proceeded to score three straight goals in a span of just over one minute to even up the game at nine apiece, but a rip by Cannone found its way into the back of the net to give Salisbury a 10-9 lead. With 2:16 left to play in the quarter, Cannone struck again to give the Gulls a two-goal cushion; 18 seconds later, Bradman fired the ball past Mustang keeper Geoff Hebert to pad that cushion to three. One Mustang goal would cut the lead back to two, but Salisbury retained a 12-10 advantage going into the final quarter of the game.
It became increasingly clear in the fourth quarter that neither team would go down without a fight. Both squads went into defensive mode as only a combined four goals were scored in the final 15 minutes. With just 1:31 left in the game, Stevenson's Richie Ford netted a shot that tied up the game at 13 and sent the contest into overtime.
The Mustangs won the face-off in the overtime period and quickly made their way down the field. However, excellent defense by long-stick midfielder Connor Burgasser (Mendon, N.Y.) led to a turnover and subsequent ground ball pickup. Burgasser dished the ball to senior defender Will Poletis (Baltimore, Md.), who sprinted down the field. Salisbury called a time-out and set up the game-winning play.
The ball went to Bradman, who waited for Winter to position himself in front of the Mustang net before executing a perfect pass. As soon as the ball landed in Winter's stick, it was out again – this time in the back of the goal. Sea Gull fans exploded. Salisbury will be in search of the program's ninth national championship.
Winter scored a game-high four goals in the thrilling victory. Goalkeeper Johnny Rodriguez (Gambrills, Md.) posted 16 saves. Salisbury caused 15 turnovers, including the clutch turnover by Burgasser which eventually earned the Sea Gulls their ticket to the big dance. "Those are probably two of the best teams in the country," said Head Coach Jim Berkman in reference to the six times Salisbury has faced off against Stevenson in the past two years; with today's game in the books, the two-year series record stands at 3-3. "We were fortunate to win this last one."
Today's win also gives Salisbury the victory in the season series between the teams; the Sea Gulls won the first meeting against the Mustangs, 16-10, before falling in the Capital Athletic Conference championship by a score of 10-6. Salisbury advances to the national championship game for the fourth time in five years; the only break in that period came last year in the NCAA quarterfinals as Stevenson trumped Salisbury, 11-9. Salisbury will face Tufts University in the national championship game on Sunday, May 30 at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., at noon.

Maryland Citizens Face Felony Charges For Recording Cops
In Maryland, it is a felony to record thuggish cops as they push around skateboarding teenagers, beat sports patrons, and pull guns on motorists for speeding.
“Several Marylanders face felony charges for recording their arrests on camera, and others have been intimidated to shut their cameras off,” reports WJZ 23 in Baltimore.
Maryland cops are using a Maryland law that states conversations in private cannot be recorded without the consent of both people involved in order to go about their business of harassing, intimidating, and assaulting citizens.
It is legal according to Maryland’s attorney general for cops to videotape citizens with dashcams but illegal for citizens to do the same.
State authorities are upset after a video appeared on the internet showing the merciless beating of a university student by thug cops at the University of Maryland in April.
In 2009, a video surfaced showing a Baltimore cop pushing around and verbally assaulting a teenager. Numerous videos in other states show cops beating and even murdering citizens.

While the "Atlantic Beach Bikefest" had traditionally been held in Myrtle Beach, the Mayor said enough is enough. After more than 70 years of raking in billions of dollars, Bike Week is no more in Myrtle Beach.
Rumor has it Black Biker Week got so out of control, restaurants were shutting their doors as well as other businesses because it has been reported many bikers would simply get up from their tables and walk out without paying a thing.
Salisbury News has been informed that Ocean City "embraced the idea" but other sources say the public officials were too afraid of a lawsuit, they simply folded and agreed to allowing this event.
For what it's worth Folks, if I were a public official I'd tell this group they could shove it where the sun doesn't shine. If they want to pick an "off weekend" where there isn't the biggest crowds of the year, fine. Similar to the classic car events. But Memorial Day Weekend, are you people NUTS!
I lived in Ocean City year round for many years. Memorial Day Weekend is NOT a weekend you even leave your home, let alone invite some 50,000 Bikers to Town.
The Ocean City Police Department Officers have gone through sensitivity classes to help handle this particular event.

Israel has hosted a high-level strategic simulation in which the United States prevented the Jewish state from responding to an Iranian weapons of mass destruction threat.
The simulation, conducted by the Interdisciplinary Center in the Israeli city of Herzliya, was based on a scenario in which Iran supplied its proxy, Hizbullah, with a radiation bomb. During the exercise, which employed former diplomats and senior officials, the administration of President Barack Obama prevented an Israeli military operation.
"As far as the United States was concerned, Israel was trigger-happy," former U.S. ambasador to Israel, Daniel Kurtzer, who played Obama, said. "It sought to use the Hizbullah attack as a justification for what the United States was told would be an all-out war."
Organizers said the simulation was based on a scenario employed by Harvard University in early 2010. In the Harvard exercise, Washington imposed heavy pressure on Israel to block any response to a Hizbullah strike on the Defense Ministry and military headquarters in Tel Aviv.
"Iran deterrence proved dizzyingly effective," former Israel Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Eitan Ben-Eliahu, who participated in the simulation, said.
The latest simulation enacted heavy pressure by Obama on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the exercise, Obama forced Netanyahu to agree to an international, rather than Israeli, response to a Hizbullah radiation bomb.
"This would be a very serious act of war with serious losses of life and would be seen this way by the public," former Israeli ambassador and Netanyahu confidant Zalman Shoval, who played the prime minister, said. "As prime minister, I would call for the opposition to join an emergency coalition government and hold a conversation with the president of the United States. We would expect the United States to make clear decisions in regard to an umbrella defense for us in the region."
Organizers said the simulation was based on the assessment that Netanyahu as well as his defense minister, Ehud Barak, could be stopped by Washington from launching a major attack on Hizbullah and Syria. US-Born Yemeni Cleric Advocates Killing US Civilians
An American-Yemeni cleric whose Internet sermons are believed to have helped inspire attacks on the U.S. has advocated the killing of American civilians in an al-Qaida video released Sunday.
Anwar al-Awlaki has been singled out by U.S. officials as a key terrorist threat and has been added to the CIA's list of targets for assassination despite his American citizenship. He is of particular concern because he is one of the few English-speaking radical clerics able to explain to young Muslims in America and other Western countries the philosophy of violent jihad.
The U.S.-born al-Awlaki moved to Yemen in 2004 and is in hiding there after being linked to the suspects in the November shooting at an Army base in Fort Hood, Texas, and the December attempt to blow up a U.S. jetliner bound for Detroit.

U.S. Selective Service In Obama Cover-Up?
Is the U.S. Selective Service System now blocking access to President Barack Obama's online registration records?
Members of the public searching the federal database for the commander in chief's registration are suddenly finding new difficulty, possibly due to the startling revelation of Obama's alleged use of a Connecticut-based Social Security Number.
The Selective Service System, or SSS, collects names of Americans for use by the Department of Defense in the event of a national emergency. On its website, it says it provides the nation "with a structure and a system of guidelines which will provide the most prompt, efficient, and equitable draft possible, if the country should need it."
Regarding President Obama, "He is registered. There is no doubt in our minds that he has, and we're quite prepared to say so," SSS public-affairs specialist Dan Amon told WND.
But the agency's online search engine now appears to be precluding the public from seeing Obama's record after allowing unfettered access.
The database allows people to search for registrants as long as a correct name, Social Security Number and date of birth are entered.
On May 5, WND entered the criteria for President Obama, using his date of birth as Aug. 4, 1961, and his Social Security Number, which begins with the Connecticut-issued prefix of 042.
The Selective Service database instantly issued a "matched record" without a problem that day, indicating Obama's Selective Service Number is 61-1125539-1. It lists date of registration as Sept. 4, 1980.
However, when WND re-entered the same information on May 20, the database did not provide the matched record, but instead posted a message, stating, "Error. Sorry, your request cannot be processed at this time because you have exceeded the daily limit for the verification of these credentials."
WND asked Selective Service what was causing the sudden problem in retrieving records.
Amon said it's likely because many people across the nation are now searching for Obama's records.
"If you run into problems, others have, too," he said.
Amon says a hacking attempt several years ago prompted the agency to beef up security to prevent future electronic attacks. He initially said the agency created a limit of three verification requests per day for any given record.
"If someone in Omaha, Neb., does it on a whim, then someone in Ohio does it, then that's two times."
He said when more than three requests are submitted – no matter where they're entered from – people would see the error message noting the daily limit has been exceeded.
"It's like 20 people trying to crowd into a doorway," Amon explained. "If nobody else in the world is doing it, if you punch it in the format suggested, [you get good results]; but if others try, then it will shut it down."
However, when WND repeatedly entered valid information for another American registrant, it received a matched record without any error message despite dozens of requests in the same day.
Amon later indicated his statement about the limit of three was "more of a guess."
He said he checked with the information-technology department about the limit, and admitted, "They got a little edgy."
"They just didn't want to answer it," Amon said, explaining the IT administrators did not wish to "divulge specifics of the system."

Summer At Indian River Inlet Bridge
Rehoboth Beach -- Summer visitors to Sussex County and residents alike will be pleased to see the progress being made by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and Skanska USA Civil Southeast, Inc. (Skanska) on the new Indian River Inlet Bridge.
Project Update
Construction-wise, the project is approximately 50% complete. The concrete decks of the bridge are underway and precast floor beams are all being put in place. The bulb T girders have begun arriving on site for the approach spans, the foundation columns and piers are being completed, and the four pylon towers will be reaching their completed height of 249 feet during June.
Also this summer, bridge builders will also be building the form traveler, which is a 200 ton device that will allow the construction of the bridge over the inlet. Likewise, back span and main span construction will continue and the stay cable erection process will begin. The project is expected to be completed in late spring/early summer 2011.
During the summer months, motorists are urged to take note of the 35 mph speed limit through the construction work zone. Pedestrians will move through the area as they have been since the beginning of construction, via the posted detour pedestrian route. This detour route takes pedestrians along Inlet Road through the day use parking lot and then under the existing bridge. At this point the pedestrian will go up a set of stairs to the bridge deck and cross the existing bridge. Once the bridge has been crossed the pedestrian will go down a set of stairs to the south side of Indian River Inlet at the day-use parking lot. During the summer, cyclists will utilize the shoulder of Route 1, including the existing shoulder on Rt. 1 over the existing bridge.
In early September, the Roadway Approach Contract will begin, which will build the approaches and connect them to the new bridge approach spans. This work will require lane shifts and speed restrictions for motorists traveling on Route 1/existing Indian River Inlet Bridge. After Labor Day, traffic restrictions will be put in place which will require motorists to use Route 1 northbound with one lane traveling in each direction. Route 1 southbound will be open to cyclists only. At this time, pedestrians will continue to use the pedestrian detour route outlined above.

The complex is expected to support hundreds of jobs to both construct the facility and maintain it after its completion.

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization.
Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Steve's Place,'
adjoining Boeing's plant at New Lenox and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.
It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.
Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?'
'Well, 'he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour.
If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.'
As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.' I was impressed.
I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly.
Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?'
'Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.
By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.
I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?'
'Well,' he whispered, 'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.'

Former Salisbury Star Resigns As Head Coach At Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dave Cottle stepped down today after nine seasons leading the Terrapins.
Cottle led Maryland to eight-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including three Final Fours, the last of which came in 2006. Maryland won two ACC championships during his tenure in College Park, but did not advance to the NCAA title game. Cottle leaves with an overall mark of 99-45 (.688). The 99 victories are the sixth most of any Division I men's lacrosse program during that time.
"I have decided to step down as head coach at the University of Maryland," said Cottle. "I would like to thank Dr. Mote and Dr. Yow for the opportunity to coach at Maryland and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. I have enjoyed my nine years at Maryland. This season, I enjoyed coaching this team as much as any team I have ever been around. I have developed tremendous relationships with many Terp alumni, former coaches and have had some of the finest parents any lacrosse program has had.
"I would like to thank all of my former coaches and staff, especially Ryan Moran, Jon Stainbrook and Dave Slafkosky, who has been with me all nine years. We taught our players lacrosse, but also the importance of being good students and people. I will always root for the Terps and the toughest part of my decision today is not being in the locker room and on the field with this group who I care so much about."
The Terrapins finished 12-4 in 2010 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland was third in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season with a 1-2 record this year and lost in the championship game of the conference tournament.
"Coach Cottle handled his duties as head coach with class and dignity," said director of athletics Deborah A. Yow. "We are appreciative of that and wish him the best in whatever he pursues professionally. We are grateful for his efforts over the last nine years."
Prior to arriving at Maryland, Cottle spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Loyola. There, he led the Greyhounds to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 280-115 in 28 seasons as a head coach. Cottle was the eighth coach in the history of Maryland lacrosse, taking over in Sept. 2001 from Dick Edell, who retired after 18 seasons with the Terps.
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately, chaired by senior associate athletics director Michael Lipitz. While there is no specific timeline for the search, the process will begin this week.

McGrady for Delegate campaign manager Trevor Leach will lead the grassroots training which will run from 10:30AM – 11:30AM and cover: precinct walks, voter and issue ID, along with other important activist tools. Following the training, volunteers will be served lunch then take part in a large scale door to door canvass to spread the message and identify supporters.
Bring your family, your friends, your coworkers. Bring everyone you know.
The resounding margins of victory from this past Tuesday can be replicated here in Maryland. Together we must rally and turn out the vast voter dissatisfaction towards the ever growing nanny state.

SIX-RUN INNING DOOMS DELMARVA IN FINALE
Shorebirds Open Four-Game Series Against Hickory on Monday
Salisbury, Md. – The Hagerstown Suns exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to drop the Shorebirds, 6-3, in the series finale at Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Delmarva Shorebirds were first to strike in the fourth inning. Kieron Pope led off with a sharp single to left field. Tyler Stampone followed suit with a single to advance to Pope to second. Then, a fielder’s choice ground out moved him to third. Pope scored on an RBI ground out to second by Dan Lyons.
Then, in the fifth inning, the Shorebirds defense unraveled and allowed six runs to score on four errors. Steve Souza also connected on his seventh home run of the season in the inning as well. Shorebirds starter Matt Hobgood also walked two batters and hit one in the frame.
The ‘Birds plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. T.J. Baxter reached on a infield single. Jason Stifler then advanced him ahead to third with a double to left field. Stifler then came into score on a balk.
Hagerstown Suns starter Mitchell Clegg earned the win in six innings of work. Matt Hobgood was tagged with the loss.
The Shorebirds will travel to Hickory, North Carolina to open a four-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m.

On 05/24/10 at approximately 0012 hours, a Trooper from Salisbury Barrack conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Clarence Alonzo Smith at the above location. Circumstances existed which required the Trooper to ask the driver to exit the vehicle and submit to a pat down of his outer garment The Trooper immediately detected a package in the driver’s pocket which he recognized as a controlled dangers substance. Smith was asked to remove the items from his pockets. Smith handed the Trooper two clear plastic baggies containing a greenish brown vegetable matter suspected Marijuana. Smith was arrested and transported to WCDC for processing.

In Gettysburg the women's team won the NCAA Div. III Championship, beating Hamilton College by 1 goal.
At Sea Gull Stadium, the men's team defeated Stevenson U. by 1 goal in a NCAA semi-final game that had it all: numerous ties, a delay due to thunder/lightening and an overtime period.
Stevenson tied the score at 13 all to force the OT, and the winning goal was scored by Mike Winter toward the end of the 4 minute period.
The Gulls will play in the Div. III championship in Baltimore on May 30 against Tufts University, which defeated Cortland, the number 1 seed.
