Republican senators are debating whether or not to replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a federal holiday, as part of an amendment to the bipartisan bill introduced last week.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas proposed legislation last month that would officially recognize Juneteenth, the day marking the end of slavery in the US, as a national holiday.
The bill is expected to pass in a unanimous decision, however it has been met with some resistance from fellow Republicans who say creating another federal holiday could be too costly.

Jan 1, 1863 is when Emancipation Proclamation took effect, freeing the slaves in states fighting the Union.
Two limiting points to consider: no practical effect for slaves in the South until Union forces could physically inform them and free them, and there were a small number of slaves in the North, and they were not freed because they were property and the Feds couldn't take your property without reimbursing.
Juneteenth is locally important in TX where it occurred, and they have celebrated it there. States are free to celebrate dates and events that are not on the national calendar,and many do. It did not free Northern slaves, for example.
The 13th Amendment which became effective on December 6, 1865 is what actually ended slavery in all of the United States. If we are to commemorate the end of slavery in the US that's the date we should look to.
I oppose horse trading Columbus Day; it was definitely celebrated back in the day, as were both Washington and Lincoln independently. But if the woke panderers can no longer stomach Columbus my suggestion would be to honor St. Brendan, the Navigator. He landed here almost a thousand years earlier and had no slaves. His feast day is May 16. Just sayin'.

Just give out trophies and be done with it learn why the civil war started in the first place and you'll learn slavery was a part of it but not the main reason. President Lincoln used slaves to beat the south he used slaves to get what he wanted. The government is using all people of color again to get what they want and you don't even see it LOL. Countless 1st hand accounts from letters, articles, speeches and official statements, and other written records from confederate political and military leads constantly re-enforce the fact the confederacy was fighting for "their right" to maintain the system of slavery. The funny part was how many of the same dunderheads and dolts on this board were the same type of dumb poor whites who were convinced to go to battle to preserve the wealth of slave masters back during the CW era
