Kim Jong Un cracks down on outside cultural influences

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is conducting a war on words against his countrymen speaking like their neighbors to the south, according to a report.

Widely screened video lectures showed North Koreans being punished for imitating popular South Korean words and phrases, according to Expresswhich cited a report by Radio Free Asia.

The videos included people being arrested and interrogated for speaking or writing in the “South Korean style” and an insider told Radio Free Asia that “Dozens of men and women had their heads shaved and they were shackled as investigators interrogated them.”

“According to the speaker in the video, 70 percent of residents nationwide are watching South Korean movies and dramas,” the resident of the North Hamgyong province told RFA saying the videos were shown at all institutions in early July.

The speaker warned “our national culture is fading away.”
