North Carolina governor orders Confederate statues removed from state capital, cites public safety

North Carolina has started to remove Confederate statues in the state capital, citing public safety concerns.

Gov. Roy Cooper has long advocated for the removal of such statues around Raleigh and has said that now is the time to finally act.

“If the legislature had repealed their 2015 law that puts up legal roadblocks to removal we could have avoided the dangerous incidents of last night,” Cooper said Friday.

“Monuments to white supremacy don’t belong in places of allegiance, and it’s past time that these painful memorials be moved in a legal, safe way.”

History is history. The civil war, those that lead and died on both sides of the war are a real part of our history as a Nation. If we as a Nation are not mature enough to understand and accept the sentiments generated by loss of loved ones and the devastating impact the war had on all Americans, then we are surely doomed to repeat it. The presence of the statues serve as a reminder of the tremendous upheaval that occurred during the Civil War, loss of life and that in the end, the right cause succeeded.

Look folks, its time to put this to bed. The confederacy lasted less than a decade. They decided that they were willing to take up arms against the US to protect an economic system that was 100% counter to the ideals of America. NO ONE, especially citizens of color, should have to honor/commemorate/praise the confederacy, which is exactly what these statues on public/state controlled spaces does. If you want to continue to salute the confederacy, the answer is simple. Put your money together to put up all the statues and flags you want on your own private land.

Northwest Woodsman: Pandering to blacks? For what reason? Why can’t these liberal politicians see that every time they give in to a demand by blacks, it is never enough and they make more outrageous demands. Vacate your house, governor and give it to a black family and I will guarantee they won’t be satisfied.

It's ok. Because after the next Civil War. Which is coming soon. Maybe they will have statues of me throughout the land. Umm. I feel better already.

When are we going to start taking down the Martin Luther King statues??? And closing the museums?? It makes just as much sense to me.

1050 let me slow it down for you. These statues are often on public land. And often involved public financing (tax dollars) to install and maintain. Do whatever you want with your loser statues amd flags on your private land, case closed.
