U.S. Postal Service could shut down by June without more funding, Democratic lawmakers warn

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, postal workers have been on the front lines, considered "essential workers" who must continue to do their jobs as usual while others stay home. But some lawmakers are warning that without more support, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) could completely shut down in the next few months, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Last week, Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney, the chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Gerry Connolly, chair of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, said in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that the COVID-19 crisis is threatening the future of mail service in the U.S.

"The Postal Service is in need of urgent help as a direct result of the coronavirus crisis," they said. "Based on a number of briefings and warnings this week about a critical fall-off in mail across the country, it has become clear that the Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate help from Congress and the White House. Every community in America relies on the Postal Service to deliver vital goods and services, including life-saving medications."

Watch the Democrats fund them high beings they want all their help in November trying to push this "Vote by Mail" scam!!!

If they could pass a logical budget there wouldn’t be a problem.

Please let us know as soon as possible so i may cancel my recycling trash pickup.

Then have them only deliver mail 3 or 4 days a week to cut costs. Why is this so hard for these people to figure out?

I doubt Trump is going to give them more money. He tried to address this "TITANIC" situation when he first took office. The postal service will have to change and adapt finally and not be the albatross it's been for the last 30-40 years. The business isn't structured to survive today. If we all have to adapt and change out day to day function they damn sure do. Look at the financial wreck it's been, we can't accept this as taxpayers and must force them to downsize and do away with a day of service. IT'S NOT NEGOTIABLE

Going to be a lot of broken hearts that work there. They've worked for a few decades trying to cruise into retirement and the postal service has done messed it all up

No real issue. Most of my mail is now through email and I pay my bills online and get email notifications.

The only thing I get from the postal service is junk mail. Amazon can easily find someone else or themselves to deliver packages. No real loss. They have been on the tax payers life support for years. It's time to turn off the machine!

Postal Service has always been a bottomless pit because of mismanagement. Make them do what MD did. longer hrs with no pay increase under WM Donald Schafer. Must take furlough days / work without pay that started with Glendenan which continued for about 10 years. Cut their budget and hire someone who can manage a proper budget instead of an inflated one. Cut the pay and benefits from Post Master General down since they are a bunch of useless idiots. Postal Service is Democrats since all they know how to do is spend spend spend without held accountable.

Just got 25 billion dollar bailout and still threatening a shutdown in June?? SHUT DOWN ALREADY. @1:11 Amazon saw this coming band is developing their own delivery system already

Shut it down. We can’t afford a failing system. Let’s our tax dollars to better use. Besides we have some called technology now.

Postal service has a "net worth of -65 billion dollars and ANOTHER 140 billion in unfunded liabilities. How does the government accounting office ALLOW this place to fall so far down the crapper??

Anonymous said...

Just like any old entity there comes a time to take them out back and "put them down" ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Everyone should start requesting Fed ex ground when they order something

This outfit had lost billions upon billions of dollars for many years. Shut them down.

i make buggy whips. think I can get in on this bailout bs too?

Deliver Mail every other day, each route. Cut staff in half! Time to get rid of this inefficient process.

Do your research, the reason the Postal Service is going broke is because of the huge burden it has with Union Pensions. Promises made that are impossible to keep. if ti was not for this burden they would be fine, but Pelosi wants us to bail them out for her union buddies.

That's the postal managements version dumbass. It IS the postal services responsibility to actually put money into funding their retirement promise. What a dumbass

Anonymous said...

I think they mean they've been recycling so much junk mail.

Anonymous said...

@4:00 dumbass. Postal service management spent the 11 billion dollars they defaulted on to the Treasury department. This money was supposed to fund the retirees not outrageous bonuses to middle to upper management. What do you suggest people work there for nothing? The new hires don't get any benefits as it is

If they are in the red and bailed out with your money it means they aren't charging enough to be profitable or at least break even. This means your money is actually being used to subsidize the junk mail we all receive. Raise the price and take a cut out of the junk mailer wallet instead of the taxpayers. If they still can't survive shut them down. The only reason they were created was to fill a void that early American companies couldn't. That changed 150 years ago.

The postal service reminds me of that spoiled ass kid that their parents always bought them the best of everything, bailed them out time after time. They've been giving out ridiculous salaries and bonuses to management for 30+ years. Look at "postmaster general"(what a joke) they come in for four years making a generous salary and then retire with six figures and full health insurance coverage

USPS just another government Ponzi scheme. They've stolen every bit of money from their retirement system and now the fraud can't be covered up any longer

Anonymous said...

They will always get their frigg'in funding !!! Govt has Endless $$$$$$$

Just Print some more & quit wining !!!!

Anonymous said...

They ain't going Anywhere , they Got Plenty of $$$$$$$$$$ !!!

Anonymous said...

You 1:11 are one of the reasons the postal service is falling behind.

Anonymous said...

Thank you 4:09, management aways has a skewed version when it comes time to talk about money distribution. 4:00 is in management.

@5:18 & 6:30 obviously the same person. The government only takes in 3 trillion a year in taxes and they gave out 2.2 already. It's dumbasses like you that the United States is in the position it's in. Another glorified welfare recipient. Must be one of the local drinks that deliver mail

Anonymous said...

To all you know it all the postal service is no longer a branch of the government and hasn't been for 30 years. There just a bunch of lazy ass freeloaders that has run it's course. No more GM, WALL STREET, AND YES THE WINDOW LICKING POSTAL SERVICE bailouts

Anonymous said...

I am another reason. USPS provides me no service either.4

Anonymous said...

Who in their right mind would think it's still okay to give the postal service and open checkbook. It's time to cut at least one maybe two days of delivery service and downsize both the number of offices and employees. DRASTIC TIMES CALL FOR DRASTIC MEASURES. You can't keep paying someone to show up 5-6 days a week and their literally doing 3-4 honest days of work.

Fire the Bosses !!! Goes with the Territory !!! called Accountability !!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah and they want mail in voting.

Anonymous said...

The people that work there think this is all a big joke and daddy(taxpayers) are going to keep bailing them out. They've under bid ALL their contracts with bulk mailers and Amazon just to get business. They are TOO STUPID to pass some of the costs onto to their consumers and every couple of years this is the result. Their financial downfall has been a long process and in typical democrat fashion are trying to blame it on the coronavirus. Worthless outfit

I would be happy to only get my bills and junk mail a couple times a week. I am old and do not pay my bills online. Some of us oldies still do it the old fashioned way......by mail. The way they keep raising the price of stamps, they should be swimming in money. Just cut the service down to a couple days a week and cut the workers days way back. End of problem.

Digital is here mail and cash will go away.
