President Donald Trump should appoint a military official to lead efforts at getting production and shipping done through the Defense Production Act, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday.
Officials in New York and elsewhere are having trouble getting what they need to treat coronavirus patients, Schumer told CNN.
"Just in the last day, I heard from hospitals who didn't have ventilators. Police officers who don't have masks," Schumer said. "Nurses, medical technicians on the front lines risking their lives who don't have PPE. So the system that the federal government has put in place is not working, plain and simple."
Trump already has put in limited use of the Defense Production Act, typically used in wartime, to force manufacturers to make goods to fight to COVID-19 pandemic. But he has attempted to show restraint, hoping businesses will do the right thing on their own.
Schumer said that isn't getting the job done.
"We are not going to overcome this supply problem unless we have someone, a military person in charge," he said.

Lets see, after 9/11 it was no secret we were vulnerable. Not only could a dirty bomb be release but a virus that could kill.
So fast forward almost 20 years and you're telling me these cities and hospitals aren't prepared?
Voters - pay close attention. Politicians are more than just figureheads. They are responsible for ensuring their districts have jobs/industries, decent schools, and all that would be needed for an emergency.
Geesh, no wonder Donald Trump was elected.
Schumer certainly didn't help his state prepare, yet the man has been a representative or senator of or from NY since 1974. Yes, 1974, when he was 24 years old.
Schumer is a typical example of a democrat. He whines all the time along with his sister Pelosi. Neither one has ever mentioned the fact that their governor, another democrat dipstick, failed the people of New York by not having any stock pile at all. If they were given a million ventilators, 20 million mask and protective gear it would not be enough. This is strictly a democrat talking point for the election.
By the way, Schumer and Pelosi are going to try to steal the election by manipulating the Electoral College and then take it to court to say the vote is invalid. They have already set the stage by haveing some states pass laws that say they can award the Electoral count anyway they wish. They did this in Maryland last elections. Wake up people. It's happening now!

Schumer is admitting the Democrat Governor and the States have very poor leadership, since they have never prepared for a major disaster and wants to blame a Republican. What has Schumer and the Democrats done to prepare for these things? Nothing but spend on frivolous things. Shows very poor leadership from Democrats. All they want to do is complain with "Monday Moring Quarter backing".
Schumer does not want to go home, he doesn't have enough ventilators in his state period!
