Government Should Stop Promoting Unemployment During COVID-19

American prosperity always has relied on the fact that we are the most productive people in human history.

Unfortunately, some short-term Band-Aids for the widespread economic distress caused by the coronavirus lockdowns may have substantial negative effects that make it harder for Americans to get back on their feet.

While much of what is in the CARES Act passed by Congress will be important in mitigating the damage of the COVID-19 pandemic, some provisions already are creating bad, unintended consequences.

One problem has been the federal unemployment insurance that gives unemployed Americans $600 a week no matter what they were making before they lost their jobs.

A coffee shop owner in Harlan, Kentucky, explained why it’s hard for small businesses to retain staff right now.

“The very people we hired have now asked us to be laid off,” wrote Sky Marietta, who owns the shop with her husband, Greg, according to NPR. “Not because they did not like their jobs or because they did not want to work, but because it would cost them literally hundreds of dollars per week to be employed.”

The federal government is offering $600 a week on top of state unemployment benefits, which means that for many, being unemployed is more lucrative than staying at work.

This article is SPOT ON! Let me start with...NOBODY'S gonna like what I have to say, BUT sometimes, the truth hurts! YES, anyone who has been laid off, or has had their hours cut back (due to the pandemic) absolutly SHOULD get compensated through unemployment, etc, BUT why should anyone that's STILL working, making the same amount of money, be getting paid more? Nobody likes "free" money being shoved into their pockets more than me, but I'm on SS disability, and I'm still getting my disability, so I HAVENT been financially impacted. I dont deserve this payment, yes, I like money as much as anyone else, but MY disability hasn't been cut, so WHY am I getting more? I haven't earned it. WHY are people getting paid TAX funded government checks IF their still working? Why are the folks on Welfare getting these checks, if they're still getti g welfare? WE ARE MEGA TRILLIONS OF DOLLATS IN DEBT!!! Again, I know this sounds weird, but we need to look at the BILLIONS of tax payer dollars that are going to the millions of citezens that have NOT lost 1 penny due to the virus! This makes NO sense! Some may say "well, it'll stimulate the economy" NO, it wont. The people that have lost jobs, NEED this money to eat, to pay tent, etc. Their not looking to buy cars, boats, etc. This is a HORRIBLE DANGEROUS precedent we're setting, and WE ALL need to look at the long term effects of this. We already have stories coming in, where folks who have been laid off dont wanna go back out and work, because now, they can sit at home and get paid. My wife's coworkers are arguing with each other over to see who CAN get laid off, so they can sign at home to and get paid! BILLIONS of dollars are being given to MILLIONS of us, that have not lost any income. I know its hard to wrap your head around this FACT, but this is money WE DONT HAVE!!!! Let's open this great productive country back up and STOP this "Social experiment" NOW!

You can say that again!

It has poisoned the work ethic, you can see it here in the comments every day. People that still have jobs actually are pissed off about it.

Im pissed off because what some feel they are getting FREE money - we all will have to pay for that FREE money later.

Later is the growing hole thats TENS of TRILLIONS.

THAT is of most concern - not FREE since nothing is FREE.

It is called SOCIALISM / COMMUNISM. Government has to promote unemployment and the virus. That is giving them an opening to control you. Why do you think they are paying $600 more for unemployment? So you have to depend on the government
