CDC urges elderly to stock up on food, stay home amid coronavirus fears

Elderly Americans and people with underlying health conditions should stock up on food and prepare to isolate themselves at home since they are the most at risk of getting seriously ill from the coronavirus, a senior health official said Monday.

The advice is part of new recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aimed at the most vulnerable populations and stems partly from a new study of 70,000 Chinese patients with the virus.

“Have enough household items and groceries so that you will be prepared to stay home for a period of time,” Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC official, said in a conference call Monday.
