Kweisi Mfume has won the Democratic primary in the race to succeed Rep. Elijah Cummings, while Kimberly Klacik has won the Republican nomination.
The Associated Press projects that Kweisi Mfume is the Democratic nominee and Kimberly Klacik is the Republican nominee to succeed the late Rep. Elijah Cummings
Cummings, who chaired the House Oversight Committee, died last Oct. 17. Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the special election in the days after Cummings’ passing. The general election for the seat will be held on April 28, the same day as the statewide primary. The winner will fill the remainder of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings' term until Jan. 3, 2021.
With 225 of 313 precincts reporting, Mfume holds 43.2% of the Democratic vote. Klacik has claimed 41.7% of the Republican vote.
