SALISBURY – Wicomico County Public Schools has joined forces with three agencies to create a new Youth Safety Task Force.
Late last month, the leaders of Wicomico County Public Schools, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Juvenile Services and the Office of the State’s Attorney for Wicomico County formed a task force to identify and address systematic issues involving youth in the community.
The goal of the task force is to quickly and effectively implement solutions to protect the safety and rights of every child, support academic integrity, and build a strong and vital future for all of Wicomico County, according to a press release.

Just what the system needs another task force to look into the situation
I'd really like to be optimistic about this but it isn't happening. Little will be accomplished, people will be awarded Moe "me wall" certificates, egos will be massaged, but the problems will persist unabated.
I will make it easy.... Fight u get suspended 2 weeks... Assault a teacher ARRESTED/EXPULSION...COST $0.
More lip service, and do nothing meetings.
Unless this safety “task force” is actually going to get rid of the problems this is more lip service from Hanlin and her minions. Get the problem kids out of schools and safety will follow.
Why is a "task force" necessary to enforce accountability?
Next they will need a "task force" to enforce accountability to the board of education. Re-friggin-diculous. I think 9:19am should be paid to strike the gavel and handle business. Can we write in a vote? And if I may have input, not in school suspension-that has proven to be pointless and actually dangerous. Suspension is not being allowed to come to school at all.
Liberals on a TASK FORCE ? LOLOLOL OK
when I was growing up in the early 70's, if you didn't shape up or did something majorly wrong you were expelled and it was up to your parents to figure out how to make sure you met the truancy laws. Which basically meant your parents either paid for private school or got you to school in the next county. So why aren't more of these so called trouble makers sent to that problem kid school the taxpayers are paying for?
Five days for fighting, these kids look forward To that vacation. This will not stop anything, we need to expel kids that constantly creat problem. It will be up to parents to find new school in another district. It is time to get tough with these thug
Dear readers and especially Dr. Hanlin,
A task force is a very pretty way to evoke a feeling of doing something in the community. The reality is that parents have not effectively raised their children, and continue to ignore even basic parenting. The result are the hordes of out of control youth. The time for wishes, dreams and unicorns is now long gone. Dismiss the task force, speak with Mr. Culver as well as the professionals at juvenile justice, procure a facility and remove those students who are disruptive for a period of time that focuses on earning their way back to the rest of the civilized student population. If unsuccessful, they remain and work towards their degree.
Right now my good doctor, you have a political nightmare on your hands, and you will be ousted on this fact alone if you do not do something comprehensive and effective immediately.
Hint, a task force won’t be a help to you Donna - I warned you about this before you took the job.
Regards,
Paladin
I’m looking for Sheriff Lewis to Deputize law abiding gun owners soon. Virginia Sheriffs are threatening to do the same. Here’s a good opportunity for him to get on Fox News again.
Not as long as Lib scum on the BOE are hugging a thug.
Expulsion is actually extremely expensive because the county is still responsible for educating the expelled student
Because it's not 1970 anymore.
Violent and disruptive students must be removed from the school system permanently without doing that nothing else matters
True responses to your comments:
1. 9:19-Like your idea but our Democrat General Assembly and DOJ says we can't do that.
2. 9:45-DGA says you must educate them somewhere until they are 18 years old.
3. 10:09 you can only hold so many trouble makers in one spot unless you want to give more tax dollars for mo9re facilities.
4. 10:11 If you expel that kid then you have to send teachers to the kids home until age of 18.
5. 11:15 good idea but what you don't understand is that these students just don't want to earn a way back to a civilized student population and their parents simply don't care.
6. 11:44- Democrat Liberal Scum says you must Hug and Educate that Thug until 18 years of age. Not me saying that. Dem. Gen. Assembly and DOJ.
Lots of suggestions but none that can be done because of limitations put on school system controlled by Maryland Democrat General Assembly and DOJ. Anyone see a pattern here?
Years ago the juvenile delinquents were sent to reform school which in fact was prison and if they acted up there and were old enough they were sent to regular prison where they got a hole new experience.
Everything except punishment and transparency.
Dude it’s almost 2020. The world is different today.
But everyone on here has their own solution. To which 0% can be done according to constraints on the BoE by the MD General Assembly and MSDE. Need to put pressure on those 2 before Hanlin.
Start with the teachers and tell them they can not have sex with the students!
I'd love to see Sherriff Mike on FOX News again !!!!
Dear 3:09,
I believe you to be incorrect on the point you stated. Of course there are those students not the least bit interested in their education, and certainly not interested in earning their way back. In this circumstance, they remain until they either simply do not come back after aging out (I believe they can now quit school at 17) or remain in a juvenile justice like public education facility. Note, I stated “like” not in a juvenile justice facility. There was something similar to this established some time ago called CHOICES, and this could certainly be established again.
Kind regards,
Paladin
Stop and frisk !!!
John Cannon wanted to change that process. Looks like he didn't get his way.
1970 rules worked
Because of all the liberals shouting ENTITLEMENT. Education should be a PRIVLEDGE for those who can adhere to rules. If you can't, get the f*** OUT. END OF STORY
It's long past time for the Eastern Shore to separate from the Western Shore. Let's splitvtge state in half based on which side of the bay your country is in. Then Eastern Maryland or whatever we wish to be named can move forward with a conservative political approach and make Easton our state capital. We can then being back our values like we once had many years ago.
Northwest Woodsman: The solution to this problem is simple. Look at who is the primary cause of the violence add set up a segregated school system. Worked in all the years that I was in school in Snow Hill. During that period, there were never any fights or attacks on teachers, nor were there any drugs. All of those issues began after integration was forced upon us by armed federal intervention. Isn't it obvious where these problems began? It certainly is to me, especially looking at it from my prospective here where the minority participants in the local school district total .01%. No fights, no violence, no injured teachers, no “resources officers” patrolling the halls. Can you imagine a school environment like that where you live? Where students who want to learn can actually benefit. The reason why I moved here is because it reminded me of Snow Hill circa 1958. No chain stores, no fast food joints, not even a Starbucks in my town. All mom and pop businesses and all that combined with Amazon.com, I have little reason to ever leave this paradise and travel to the mainland.
