Harris Statement on State Reconsideration of Offshore Wind Projects

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) responded to today’s decision by the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) granting Ocean City’s petition to reconsider the U.S. Wind and Skipjack offshore wind projects. The PSC will reconsider the use of Maryland taxpayer subsidies for the projects.

Congressman Harris made the following statement:

“The view of dozens of giant wind turbines in these proposed projects from the beach in Ocean City undermines our local economy. I commend the decision of the Maryland Public Service Commission to reconsider spending tax dollars of hard-working Marylanders to pay subsidies for both the US Wind and Skipjack offshore wind projects. Both of these projects, developed by foreign companies, now include proposals to install giant 853 foot tall wind turbines off Maryland’s coast – windmills that are nearly three times taller than those originally proposed and originally approved several years ago by the Commission. I share the concerns of the residents of Ocean City, which in addition to having to see larger unsightly towers with their flashing red aviation warning lights, also include negative effects on fishing, marine safety, tourism, and property values. These projects as now proposed with much larger windmills need to be stopped until all the local concerns can be dealt with, if that is even possible.

Wind turbins are a boondoggle.

Everywhere around the world where they been built, they have been a looser.

You'll almost never see them because of humidity , curvature of the earth etc. Fishing is always better around such structures . Because they need standby generation capability you will pay MORE for electricity .

These windfarms promising 9700 jobs sound like a scam. The taxpayers should not be on the hook for this unless we are the only ones involved. No Energy companies making millions off of it, while assuming none of the risk.

Wind turbines will wreck havoc with marine life and fisheries as the infrasound will result in the deaths of whales and porpoises as well as eliminating productive grounds for commercial and sport fishery. The energy produced is the most expensive energy in the world and will be transmitted to New York and New Jersey. Locally we pay through degradation of Maryland's only ocean shoreline, more land based transmission lines, and substantially higher utility costs. Thank you Congressman Harris for representing District 1 constituents.

It is a scam and moron jake day drank a full glass of that koolaid when he announced it would bring 5000 jobs to the area.

If that idiot had done some research he would have discovered that NO jobs will be coming to smallsbury and the industry is knowledge and experience specific. Meaning there is no one here that know how to work on a turbine.

EXPERIENCED workers will be brought in under foreign visas and once the work is done an EXPERIENCED maintenance crew may or may not remain in the area.

Jake is so stupid I read he signed up all the taxpayers to fund some turbine he is allowing to be built somewhere around the city.

Isn't it bad enough you own over 106 million for rainbow crosswalks and bike lanes but now you are on the hook for 10+ years of a taxpayer subsidized windmill, most likely owned and sold to him by a foreign company.

He just put a nail in the coffin of that neighborhood, as your property value has just taken a huge dive.

Instead of the moniker 'dabury , we should name this place 'dastupids

What about the law that takes money from electric bills to help pay for some of these private projects? Hogan passed it and the money is being collected from us. It should have NEVER passed. The clean jobs act went into effect in October. Bunch of crooks. Maryland is corrupt. Little Illinois.

Not one solar farm around here contributed to the local economy, workers were brought in and used there own contractors.

For proof that wind turbines are a novel concept that does not work in actual practice please google “Washington College Wind Turbine” which was taken down due to excessive cost and a lack of benefit despite being lauded as the shore’s first foray into the future

Democrats have been receiving lobbying fund for this project for years. Yes, Democrats on the PSC want to use your tax dollars to pay for construction of foreign companies to build these windmills. And yes, they will not benefit our local economy. It will be to the advantage of the OWNERS and stock holders of the Windmill Company. And Maryland keeps voting Democrat. You deserve what you get because YOU don't get involved!

Wind turbines have in unbiased studies been shown to be relatively poor at energy creation, more importantly, they negatively affect whales use of sonar hence creating a real danger to endangered wildlife. Also, each wind turbine kills hundreds of birds every year, creatures we can hardly afford to lose more of. Sadly, wind energy is a scourge on the environment, taking advantage of well intentioned people who want a cleaner world.

10:34 the same thing was going to happen with this offshore project and the power generated benefits new jersey
