Texas hotel employee, 21, pulls incredibly long solo shift amid Imelda flooding: 'He is our hero'

A young hospitality worker in Texas is earning praise for running an entire hotel by himself after severe flooding caused by Tropical Storm Imelda left guests stranded inside the building.

Satchel Smith, a 21-year-old student at Lamar University, arrived for work at the Homewood Suites in Beaumont at 3 p.m. on Sept. 18, but rising floodwaters soon buried the access road – as well as a section of the I-10 – leaving Smith’s co-workers with no way to get to work.

Smith, however, proved to be prepared to step up to the challenge, and proceeded to make the hotel’s stranded guests comfortable in any way he could.

I was camping at Skyline Dr when reports of Hurricane Sandy was coming and would end up bringing over a foot of snow. After failing to book a cabin, we took off to head back to the shore. Reports came that the bay bridge was closed due to high winds, so we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Abingdon, MD just outside of Bel Air. I grew up there so, it seemed like a good place to ride out the storm. The front desk clerk was there for 3 days straight. He must have stayed in a room. If you go to Bel Air and need a Hotel room. Stay at the Hampton Inn. It was the only hotel to not lose power. We were quite comfortable during a pretty ruff storm. It was even fun!
