Opinion: Instead of Banning Polystyrene Foam, Enhance State’s Ability to Recycle It

Our company has provided jobs and opportunities in Maryland for more than 44 years. Today, we operate a manufacturing facility in Federalsburg and distribution centers in Hampstead and Havre de Grace employing more than 700 hard-working Marylanders.

Aside from providing good manufacturing jobs for our employees, here in the USA, and contributing to the state and local tax base, we proudly help to keep the community clean by volunteering for roadside cleanups around our facilities. We are Dart Container Corp., a family-owned manufacturer of a broad range of plastic, paper and compostable to-go containers.

Now Gov. Larry Hogan has legislation on his desk that would hurt our business and the businesses of many mom-and-pop stores, small restaurants and the citizens of Maryland.

The bill, if signed into law, would prohibit the sale of one of Dart’s main products, polystyrene foam — PS foam, which is used to make to-go products such as plates, cups, bowls and containers.

Even better would be for Governments to stop permitting municipalities from dumping garbage in the Ocean.

Wboc had a story last week on a small store in cambridge making the switch from styrofoam productsgor their foods and from their shelves.the new compostable plates cost 3 times more. Why should we be forced to spend so much more ?

The state can sustain its recycling efforts only so long as there are markets for the recyclables. The U.S. got into a cozy spot when it could ship cardboard to China, but got lazy in keeping up the quality of the product, so China said "No more contaminated cardboard". which put the brakes on all cardboard exports to China.

Glass is collected in huge quantities, but it sits in most places, waiting for something to happen. Same for plastics.

It is called Government control over our lives / habits / activities. Sounds like Nazi Germany / Russia and other communist countries. Liberals love these bills / laws. Hogan will sign it guaranteed. He allows Democrats to do what they want without objection.

Wouldn't it be great if the super-rich didn't have control over the US Government and all State Governments? Well, it would be a level playing field. Companies could operate locally in a profitable manner.

You are correct and knowledgeable.

Hogan doesn't care about you or anyone else
He's got the government now that he's sucking off of for the rest of his and his family's life

Lets follow the money trail. Big Oil has control of these petroleum based products and they have been making a fortune off of plastic production since its invention. You're never going to stop it as long as we can't convince manufacturers and consumers how this product is killing us all as well as the planet. Ninety percent of us have plastic (Bisphenol A) in our bodies already and it directly effects our hormones and thyroid. From water bottles, to baby bottles, to soup can liners, we are exposed constantly. There are alternatives but we have to start the ban now if we're going to put our health and the planet above greed.
