BERLIN – After months of discussion, town officials approved an 18% property tax increase.
On Monday, the Berlin Town Council voted 4-1, with Councilman Zack Tyndall opposed, to approve a tax rate of $.80 per $100 of assessed value. The approved increase is lower than the 34% tax hike initially discussed but citizens continued to express frustration this week.
“The compromise you’ve reached is probably unacceptable to a majority of us, but we understand that at some point something has to be done and you guys have a hard decision to make,” resident Jeff Smith said. “Make what decisions you feel you need to make and know that we’re still watching.”
Resident Tracey Albrecht said that council members were supposed to be stewards of the town. She questioned their decision to purchase “a $3 million dog park” as well as the need for a multi-million-dollar police station. She said many of her neighbors felt the same way.

Government, even at the local level, tends to grow.
That is the nature of government.
It grows because those who wrestle control of it inevitably make it grow.
They do this so that they can benefit from the growth.
On the National level, government has become a behemoth.
It is consuming everything everywhere.
Everyone knows it and nobody can stop it.
It will destroy the earth.
Avoid governments at every opportunity.
Someone cleaned up on a 3 million dollar dogpark!
Isn't it always the case -
Ask for a higher amount knowing full well you will get the lower price that you wanted in the first place. 3 million for a dog park - really! Tell me you were joking.
Throw the bums out.
Who owned the dog park before the Town bought it?
Many can't wait until Gee Wizz is voted out in the fall of 2020!
Why did Democrat Zach Tyndal oppose?
Because he knew there were enough votes and this would make him look good when he tries to run for higher office again.
it ain't cheap being COOL!
Gillis ?
RECALL THESE SCUM.
3 millions for a dog park? They didn't care, they knew they would tax the hell out of the residents to pay for it. That's one hell of a jump for property tax and does not include county tax. That's robbery! Go raise some hell, you have been robbed. Screwed without even a kiss first.
Wow! And Wow. That's a whopping increase to have to swallow. Getting hard to afford to live in the "coolest town in America." It's looking like Berlin is trying to be San Francisco.
