Doctors in D.C. 'prescribing' fruits and vegetables to low-income patients

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Some doctors in DC are prescribing more than just medicine. They're actually writing prescriptions for fruits and vegetables.

The pilot program is helping people without access to healthy foods: 20 dollars a week, or 40 dollars every two weeks, to buy fresh items from the produce section.

Councilmember Mary Cheh, who got DC to kick in $400,000 for the pilot program, says such prevention will cut health costs, and is doable on a large scale:

Wait. Doesn't food stamps cover that? Give them fresh vegetables but not the cash. When does this gravy train end?
