Trump Administration Releases Final Rule for Legal Immigrants Using Public Benefits

It is not as strict as the leaked version but would still drastically limit what benefits they could use without risking green cards or permanent residency status.

After more than a year of discussion, the Trump administration released its final rule on Wednesday to limit what public aid legal immigrants could receive without penalty.

The rule would make it harder for legal immigrants to obtain green cards or permanent residency status if they have used certain government benefits, including Medicaid, food stamps and housing subsidies. It will open up a 60-day public comment period.

The final rule is not as strict as a leaked version that was released earlier this year. That version included health insurance subsidies and participation in the Children’s Health Insurance Program as penalties for green-card applicants.

Still, the rule is expected to receive harsh pushback from advocates for immigrants, patients, low-income communities and health-care organizations.

Frederick Isai, executive director of Families USA, a health access advocacy group, released a statement on Wednesday.

"Conservatives say they want immigrants to ‘follow the rules’ of our nation. These families have done just that. Yet, this new rule continues the rewriting of core American values -- from a country that welcomes hard-working people who want to improve their lives and contribute to our nation -- to one that takes the bootstraps away from vulnerable families and doesn’t think twice in separating children from their parents."

How about if this country worries about the "bootstraps" of the people who were born here, worked here all their lives, become disabled and then have to fight the government for 3 years before actually being given the disability that they have paid into all of their lives. This is the thing that pisses me off when I see the caravan. They get everything handed to them. Why????
I have been fighting disability for over 2 years and my lawyer assures me that I will get it "eventually" but it could very well be another year before that happens. That is sad. What is even sadder is the way this country treats our veterans. There have been some changes since President Trump took office but I don't think we are at the finish line on that front. TAKE CARE OF OUR PEOPLE FIRST!!!!!

Sorry you are going through that 2:35. I witnessed the same and there was no question I was disabled. I know of several others. You will eventually get it like myself. I had to rely on friends, in-laws or anyone caring to help. It is sad the game played by our government. Lord knows I would rather have been working and still would. It smarts to see many get benefits that clearly are able to work, but prefer to be lazy.

Sorry but they may be hard working when they get here but Democrats want their vote and quickly teach them how to suck off the govt. I saw it my self when a immigrant family from Mexico was living with other family’s and left to go into section 8. They also got on food stamps.
