Owners of Virginia winery stunned after overnight thief snags almost entire grape harvest

ROANOKE, Va. — An illicit nighttime harvest this week stripped Montgomery County’s Firefly Hill Vineyards of almost its entire crop of grapes, co-owner Allison Dunkenberger said Wednesday.

“We still can’t wrap our heads around this … We’re just in the grieving process,” Dunkenberger said about the loss of her family’s grapes mere hours before she, her husband, and friends and relatives were to begin trimming the fruit from carefully tended vines.

Whoever took the grapes had to have been someone who knew something about the winery’s operations — the grapes are not visible from nearby North Fork Road, she noted. But who? “It’s not a cutthroat industry,” Dunkenberger insisted.

Sounds like it might have been from a competitor or possible a disgruntled employee.

I read this article early this morning and still cannot ponder what do thieves do with all those grapes? They had a plan and technique down well. First I've heard of this...

Hopefully there will be a follow-up!

HAPPY TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be Moonshiners! They need to investigate that avenue.

Dave T: I find theft truly repulsive. I hope those responsible are brought to justice.

Keep your eyes open at the farmers markets. Someone is going to have a lot of grapes.

Deer

More likely a herd of deer. They could strip the place, but usually over a few days, not one.

Somebody intends to make wine with all those grapes. But how did they pick that many grapes unnoticed? even in the night. Dont they have security cameras? If it were deer there would be foot prints every where. even with humans. How many different shoe prints? selling wine is a large part of their income. People stop at nothing now days. How is the turn out of grapes this year with all the rain? are they plentiful? good crops? are the vineyards taking losses due to poor quality and quanitity of grapes due to the amounts of rain this summer? Many questions to be asked here. Hope answers come out.
