*Letter to the Editor Number II
4/18/2018 just prior to 0300am

This is another important update from the volunteers at the Fruitland Fire Department. Station 3 Fruitland got dispatched 107 Oakley Lane for "chest pain and difficulty breathing." A few minutes later Central 911 upgraded this call to a "Non-Breathing Subject" and dispatched the fire engine to assist. Central stated the patient was a 50 something male who had just been released from the PRMC ER earlier in the evening.

Several minutes later Central did a response check and the Fruitland Fire Department scratched on the call so they were alerted again.

Several minutes later Central did a response check and the Fruitland Fire Department scratched on the call AGAIN so this time they hit the Station #1 volunteer tones and dispatched Station #1 for a fire engine response. Then after that at 0304am Car 3 responded with 316(Volunteer Asst. Chief) only. This is an inadequate response, but the assistant chief should be commended for responding to the scene alone when he saw no one else was going to assist.

Then maybe a minute or 2 later Truck 2(housed at Station #1) with the paid fire crew responded(finally) to assist Fruitland on this nonbreathing call. You can tell that the officer on the engine, Lt. Aaron Colgrove, had just woken up from a deep sleep and sounded very groggy. (Should the paid crew be sleeping at night?)

At 0312am Truck 2 from Station #1 finally arrived on the scene which was more than 8 minutes later. In the meantime this patient, a viable patient, has not been breathing all this time and quality additional help has not arrived for a good 20 minutes. That is very unacceptable and if the patient doesn't make it then a lawsuit could and should be pending.

The patients family could sue PRMC because the patient had been discharged from the hospital for the same complaint instead of being admitted and monitored on a cardiac floor.

The patients family could also sue Station #3 Fruitland for not responding with an adequate crew and response time.

The patients family could also sue the Salisbury Fire Department for a delayed response time because they were sleeping and took too long to arrive because they were sleeping.

The patients family could also sue Wicomico County for funding the Fruitland Fire Department to respond to these calls.

The patients family could potentially sue the City of Fruitland as well. The City of Fruitland has the Fruitland Fire Department listed on their website stating that it is their fire department and they partially fund the fire department.

Command(316 Chief) Situation placed under control at 0321am.

Paramedic A3 advised Central they were responding to PRMC with the patient at 0333am.
Car 3 advised clearing the scene 0333am.
Truck 2 advised cleared the scene at 0333am and switched their radio back to Fire Salisbury.

At 0336am Paramedic A3 asked central to notify PRMC that they were 2 to 3 minutes out.

Paramedic A3 arrived at PRMC 0339am, a good 40 to 45 minutes after being dispatched.

This is becoming a daily problem with the volunteers at the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company and this is very unacceptable. Where was the volunteer fire chief(315) who leads this department? Robin Townsend is the chief and is he too good to get out of bed to help one of their citizens in his district? This was a young man who may end up dying because of their "refusal" to respond. Thanks go out to 316 for responding.

Now the county tax payers will have to pay the City of Salisbury for that fire response even though the county has already funded the Fruitland Fire Department for handling those calls. You could tell by the voice of the officer on Truck 2 that he sounded bothered that he had to wake up from his deep sleep to go assist a citizen in need. Even when he responded back to his station he sounded tired and perturbed.

If you are worried about protection, moved to a non shorebilly county/state.

So true.

9:09 I was a volunteer for 15 years in an urban vol. fire dept. responsible for a major university, a 300+ bed hospital, multi-million dollars homes and high rise condos/office buildings. In addition to fire schools and arson investigation certifications, I have a masters degree in fire sciences. You locals are playing firemen games and are under educated babies that spend most of your time trying to one up each other. There is no leadership or discipline in either the paid or vol. depts. in this area. It is a joke except that eventually someone will die from your lack of professionalism.

No scanner and not old. I am an active firefighter with a portable radio and probably fight more fire than you paid douche bags in Salisbury.

I think it is. And if anyone wants to hear the tape they are free to get a copy at the 911 Center. You can hear how sleepy the paid lieutenant from Salisbury is and see the delayed response times.

I couldn't agree with you more Sir.

Now that Hoppes is finally leaving let's see if Jake Day does the right thing and hires a real professional to lead the Salisbury Fire Department. Promoting Tull, Gladwell, Jester, Frampton or anyone in that department would be gross negligence.
