Shelby Steele: Failed NFL Anthem Protests Show Black Protest Has Lost Its Power

Social commentator Shelby Steele recently wrote an editorial for the Wall Street Journal wondering if the protests by black NFL players during the playing of the national anthem, signals the end of any weight being placed on public protests by blacks in America today.

With so many whites turned off by the NFL protests, Steele wonders if white Americans have finally “found the courage” to “judge African-Americans fairly by universal standards.”

“The recent protests by black players in the National Football League were rather sad for their fruitlessness,” Steele wrote in his January 12 editorial. “They may point to the end of an era for black America, and for the country generally — an era in which protest has been the primary means of black advancement in American life.”

Steele went on to call the player protests “forced and unconvincing” and said they were more “dutiful” than passionate.

Blacks in general and our loony left media keep throwing around the "r" word (racist) like water on a 12 alarm fire. It has lost it's meaning. We have been so over saturated with black lives matter and all whites are racist that it has no more meaning. So what do we do. We turn it off....tune it out.

I always judged African Americans by universal standards, and I am white. However, white Americans cannot control what other white Americans think or do.I don't understand what courage has to do with anything, because people regardless of race make the decision to keep themselves "in their place".

Don't know if the More link shared this pertinent info: Mr. Steele is a black man. And a great intellect!

They have nothing to protest and now seem lost and unsure of what to do with equality and freedom and still to be looking for something to overcome.

Whites' outrage has turned to confusion, then boredom when the "protest" had no focus and no one to give it meaning, save those few on a knee, most of whom whose very success was subsidized by government schools and programs since they were infants.
Without focus, the BLM program, never really well organized, is becoming just an unpleasant memory to most.

When I see the BLM gang protesting something they remind me of a toddler who dropped their pacifier on the floor. Just whine and cry until you get what you want.
