Bill in Florida would stop people from buying soft drinks with food stamps

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A bill will be considered that would prohibit people from buying soft drinks with food stamps.

The bill was filed by Rep. Ralph Massullo (R-Lecanto). It says that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, can’t be used for soft drinks. It would require Florida’s Department of Children and Families to request a waiver of federal requirements.

If it passes, it would take effect on July 1, 2018.

Do away with the free food.

Food stamps should pay for beans or rice and water only. It is supposed to prevent down trodden people from starving and should not be a way of life.

Ok. Now this makes MUCH more sense than trying to deter drinking soft drinks via higher taxes (NYC, Philly, etc).
Why is it that our lower socioeconomic class has a higher obesity rate than their wealthiest counterparts?
Diet and exercise
And healthy food costs so much more than unhealthy food. This is why I've been advocating having a panel of nutritionists in each state to approve which foods can be purchased via food stamps: similar to the WIC program, which actually works.
Let's start worrying more about THIS health epidemic instead of these terrifying statues of confederate soldiers. We - the taxpayers- pay for it; why cant we have a say in how it's spent.
But, i guess that's not a fun narrative for CNN, WaPo, NYT, etc.
