Parents Pledge To Wait Until 8th Grade To Give Kids Smartphones

Making your child wait to get a smartphone could feel impossible, but it might be a huge relief, and many parents are doing it.

As CBS2’s Meg Baker reported, thousands have signed the ‘wait until 8th pledge’ — agreeing not to give their child a smartphone until 8th grade.

Jim Lees and his son Quentin were on their way to get a new cell phone after the 12-year-old accidentally left his in his pocket and put it in the washing machine.

Quentin uses his phone for games, and his sister uses hers for social media.

Lees said it was a family decision to give the kids cell phones.

“Part of it was logistics, activities, taking them here and there, picking them up, coordinating,” he said.

Other families in New Jersey and nationwide are signing up for the ‘wait until 8th pledge.’

“This pledge will help unify parents because it will help them stick to their guns,” parenting expert Tammy Gold said.

Kids are Tieing up the Internet , playing on it...........
The Bandwidth will Never be enough and serious business
won't be able to get on............

To begin with, it was meant for the Military , then Govt,
Next, public allowed on it (which will be America's Demise)

Enemys will always exploit it and it will Never be Secure !!

9:14...I agreed 100% and may add many adults have no business with them ( motor vehicles or phones) because they can't put them down long enough to drive a 5000 pound projectile. Then if fortunate to make it to their destination, they refuse to put them down in public while eating. These people are not only rude to ones with them, but everyone around them. I don't care to hear their conversations. the way I see it, we made out fine without them and they do have voicemail or alerts, so call the person back when you are not driving or eating.

Parents who need a village to sign on to validate their parenting choices are in need of growing some backbone.

It is still very easy to find a so-called 'dumb' phone that allows you to keep in touch with your children when they're away from home, but doesn't give them unsupervised access to the internet.
Even a simple funny you tube video can have inappropriate soft porn advertised right near it. And social media is anything but. Lots of negativity, sick humor, falsehoods and bullying going on.
Do you really want to invite the whole village to live in your child's head at the same time you're building their foundation?!

I got my own, and paid my own bill as soon as I turned 18 (was still in high school). Back then though there were no color screens, no internet and all of west OC was a "roaming" zone.

If I don't know where my 12 yr old is and they need a cell phone as a result. Then I've failed as a parent.
