Health Care Bill's Failure: Just Part of the 'Art of the Deal'

Exactly two weeks ago, this author predicted the defeat of the American Health Care Act — and explained that it was a step towards the final, actual deal that will repeal and replace Obamacare.

President Donald Trump faces three irreconcilable factions: the GOP establishment, conservatives, and Democrats. He must bring them together — to “deliver the goods,” a key rule in The Art of the Deal. But first he must show them “the downside” — and convince them they will fail on their own.

The most difficult faction to deal with is the Republican establishment — not because they are politically strong, but because on policy issues like health care, they are convinced that they have all the answers and that Trump just does not understand.

So he let them make the first move — and he exposed two things about them: first, that they had not come up with a plan that was ready for prime time; second, that they had not done any of the political legwork necessary to sell their plan to voters.

Trump gave Speaker Paul Ryan and the House Republican leadership enough rope to hang themselves. Instead of dictating terms to him, they will now depend on him to save them, politically. They must accept whatever plan he will put forward.

Best article I have seen to date. And it is true. While the MSM is bashing him, he smiles his smirk knowing that the ACA is on deaths door and will fail either way. And then everyone will be crying and back to finger pointing.

It already has in many states, and why has the MSM not dutifully reported on that?

These idiot reporters do not realize how smart this man really is. He has won some and lost some and has learned much from those experiences.

I lost my un-affordable insurance Jan 1st. And as more carriers pull out and more people drop out, this colossal failure will naturally implode on its own, and Trump knows this. We all know this.

The only one winning was the expanded medicaid crowd - as usual.

I am tired of the party fight because now the only ones losing are the citizens.

I agree that Ryans plan was a sham, but why isn't anyone talking to KY senator Paul Rand?

8:09, you must mean Rand, Paul. LOL! You so smot!

My insurance company left my state January 1 as well, and I was only left with 2 choices for insurance. Obamacare will implode and then 10,000 government administrators will be unemployed. Good for the Country, I say. Maybe then I can walk in to a local insurance office and buy a plan across the countertop that fits my family without a pile of government bureaucrats sniffing around at it.

I agree if Republicans do nothing Obama care will die a natural death and that will be the democrats fault, after all it's their bill. What nobody seems to be talking about is what makes health care so expensive and do something about those things they can do something about such as limiting amounts of law suits, selling insurance in any state they want, put a cap on drug prices, not insisting a 60 year old woman have pre natal care and on and on and on. Befor they can solve any problems they need to figure what those problems actually are.

I completely agree.

This is a colossal failure for Paul Ryan and the GOP establishment. Andy Harris did the right thing by not supporting the bill.

Trump is blaming the Democrats for the plan's failure. When Obama was president, the Republicans were the party of "No". As long as there are the 2 parties, no one will stray to the other side and there will never be a consensus. Just get rid of partisan politics altogether.

You'll never have health care legislation until both sides sit down and agree on a solution. And that probably won't work either. As it is, obomacare will collapse, and ryancare was just as bad if not worse.
Then someone will have to do something.

All I will say is repeat what I have always believed Ryan is a liberal Republican. He "rose colors" Democrat ideas and try to present them as Republican ideas. Ryan will be the downfall of Trump unless he is removed from his leadership position. He is the male version of Pelosi, look at me.

The march toward Medicare for all and that is what Trump really wants. Not Ryan half baked bill.
