Ocean City Actively Targeting Colleges To Address Seasonal Cop Shortage; Marijuana Abstinence ‘Achilles Heel’ For Recruitment

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Police Department is reaching out to more colleges and universities in an effort to fill seasonal police officer positions, an attempt considered promising to law enforcement officials.

“It has been a challenge the last couple of years,” Councilman Dennis Dare, chair of the Police Commission, said. “I asked that the chief give us an update on what the plans are going forward so that we hopefully reach our goals.”

In a Police Commission meeting Monday, Police Chief Ross Buzzuro addressed members of the committee about the agency’s efforts to target college-age students for temporary officer positions.

In 2016, the department visited 68 colleges and universities, 12 more than the year prior and 22 more than in 2013 and 2014.

The police will continue to recruit because police get no backing from their superiors, lawyers, and the court system. As soon as they arrest a black person they are considered a racist. Police then have to prove their own innocence.

21st Century City HALL, outside of the box thinking aint difficult. What is difficult - the real audience you are trying to attract isn't interested in Law Enforcement since the salary is low. Thinking college youngins want summer jobs, a little bit experience, will be responsible is PAST thinking. Heck you cannot fill your bus fleet with college youngin's - how do you think it will fare with summer officers? Going to extra colleges won't work either because of the gorilla in the "room".

Hello, you foreign summer help cannot find HOUSING, you think its any different for anyone else.....unless you have special housing for summer officers. Hmmmmm...

You need year round visibility at the local colleges, an entice LOCALS - period!

I see MSP has a sign outside their Salis. barracks announcing they are hiring.

"Those who ingest marijuana more than 20 times in their lives are permanently banned from being a law enforcement officer in Maryland."

How did Mike Lewis get into MSP? Must have lied. There are plenty of people that can substantiate 20+ "experimenting occurrences".

How pathetic is this. A decorated combat veteran can't be hired by SPD because of smoking pot over 20 years ago. If you have done it 15 times you are disqualified for life. It can even be before your 18. What a joke. Look at some of the losers they have working there.

Really? Won't post comment about Mike Lewis? There are plenty of people that know first hand that according to the rules, he should be barred from being LEO.
