Statement by ACLU of Maryland and Common Cause Maryland Regarding Pending Delegate Appointments in the General Assembly
"We are concerned that the appointment of several delegates, in particular Black and Muslim appointees, who seek to dutifully serve their communities are not being approved by Governor Hogan following his sudden decision to request background checks. The Attorney General has advised the governor that the background checks cannot be legally required. We do not agree with the administration placing requirements on these appointees that have not been placed on other legislators. More generally, we are also concerned by the lack of democratic processes used to fill vacant seats. It's time that the governor approve these appointments for the good of the communities the appointees represent, which have a right to be at the table because decisions affecting their livelihoods are being made right now in the General Assembly."

Any employer nationwide does background checks on their employees. Common sense. You do not want to hire a felon to be a bank teller for instance.
Common sense - not discrimination.
No way. Hogan stick to your guns! If I have to get a background check to work in the private sector (including a drug screening) then why shouldn't government workers be subjected to a background check?
their "concern" is short on specifics and long on insinuation
We have background checks for everyone; all the way down to youth coaching. What's the big deal?
Keep the background checks, Mr. Hogan
Shame on employers who do not look into perspective applicants and follow up with references. If the employer requires the necessary security checks for perspective applicants, ACLU needs to heed two simple words: BEST QUALIFIED!!!
Tired of the ACLU BS!
The big deal is a skeleton may pop out of the closet, and politicians and their backers fear skeletons more than Zombies!!
Too much weed??? ... of course we need to vet ... just good logic, something libs are real short on
Any delegate representing the people of Maryland had better be a Patriot and promise to uphold the Constitutions of both Maryland and the US. And, they should not have a criminal record. The fact that the ACLU has a problem with this makes one wonder whose side they are on. Are they the enemy?
Do I want to be represented by, or have others in the state be represented by people who are criminals or who have shady pasts? Nope!!
No where is the Maryland constitution states that someone has to pass a back ground check to be a representative
Yes they are
