Knightstown, Indiana flap over cross display is personal

Judy Tompkins of Knightstown is married to Joe Tompkins, but not that Joe Tompkins. But not everyone knows the difference, and lately she has been fielding abusive, misdirected phone calls.

"It's like, if you'll pardon me, 'You (expletive)!'" she said. "One man said, 'You won't be able to buy oxygen in your town.' "

That unusual comment may have referenced Judy Tompkins' husband, who has lung cancer. He also carries a Bible with him at all times, she said, and he disagrees strongly with the stand taken by his son, also named Joe Tompkins, for whom the tough talk likely is meant.

The younger Tompkins caused a firestorm in the small Henry County town this past week by joining forces with the ACLU's Indiana chapter to file a lawsuit forcing the removal of a cross from atop a giant Christmas tree in the town square. On Monday, Knightstown's town council ordered the cross removed to avoid a court case it said it couldn't win.

The capitulation only fueled passions. Dozens of Knightstown residents took to the streets Tuesday to protest the council's decision and to hand out small wooden crosses to passers-by. Hundreds of others erected crosses in their yards and storefronts. Some even mounted them on their cars.

The council removed the cross because they, as they said, "knew they couldn't win" if it went to court. Admitted it was a violation of the Establishment clause.

Then proceed the meek, humble, forgiving, moral high ground Christians to go so berzerk that they resort to threats, calling the wrong person to insult them, threatening that a person dying from lung cancer can't buy air from them (ironically incorrectly fueled at the wrong person)

Trying to exert their privilege by throwing a giant tantrum that they have to play by the rules. I guess by religious freedom... you are free to be, and you better be, their particular brand of religion.

This is shameful, really.
