Important Announcement about Evergreen Health Cooperative Inc. | |
Baltimore — Evergreen Health Cooperative Inc. (“Evergreen” or “company”) will not be issuing or renewing individual health benefit policies, both on and off Maryland Health Connection (“Exchange”).
“After many months of working closely with Evergreen management, leadership at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and outside investors to find a workable solution, we have run out of time to meet the deadline for a January 1 effective date. We remain committed to a viable, competitive insurance industry in Maryland,” said Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr.
Evergreen is a start-up health maintenance organization (HMO) organized as a not-for-profit Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (“CO-OP”) under the Affordable Care Act and was licensed by the Maryland Insurance Administration on March 28, 2013. CO-OPs were sponsored by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”) to increase competition among insurance companies.
This means that Evergreen Health plans are not available on Maryland Health Connection for the 2017 plan year (for policies effective January 1, 2017).
What this means for Evergreen individual policyholders:
Evergreen will be unable to offer or bind any new individual policies during Open Enrollment for the 2017 plan year (for policies effective January 1, 2017). Likewise, Evergreen also will be unable to renew any individual policies during Open Enrollment for the 2017 plan year.
What this means for group policyholders:
This does not impact group policies. Group policies currently in effect will remain in effect until the policy renewal date. Group policyholders should continue to pay the premiums on their in-force policies to ensure continued coverage.

Wow thats not good, that leaves just one carrier
Obama care needs some major fixing.
This is because Evergreen went from Non Profit to For Profit. It is now investor owned. They were bleeding money and in a argument with the Fed about owing millions.
Personal policy's only choice is now Care First with their outrageous prices. And you can thank the State of MD for that since they gave them MORE of a price increase than they asked for.
On the exchange you now have only Care First and Cigna..
The rates are no different if you go on or off the exchange if you do not quality for a subsidy.
That brought my bill to over 11K
Thanks Obama, I am now uninsured.
Most people own automobiles and they have to be insured. If you move to Florida, California or West Virginia you can take your auto insurance with you. Why can't it work the same way with health insurance? There is the same equivalence with people who have pre-existing conditions...if you're a poor driver with a bad record you fall under the Maryland Uninsured Motorist Fund. Why can't there be a Maryland Pre-existing Condition Fund for health insurance? This stuff about can't sell health insurance across state lines is a bunch of BS.
Cigna is a third one listed, but they are all 3 unaffordable. I punched in my numbers to see what my penalty would be, and the calc said Zero on the website! I still can't find a way to buy an alternate policy on the Exchange site. It's totally unusable.
Thanks, Obama. Now I have no Evergreen insurance (they never sent me a letter, but sent me an email to hurry and renew) Calling them tonight is how I learned about the cutoff.
So, at a $35k household income, I'll either pay $0 for no insurance, or $400/ month for the privilege of paying $12,000 out of pocket a year if I need any medical treatment.

What to do?
Get a job with employer group health insurance or marry someone with a job with employer group health insurance.
...weird. A month ago they sent me a letter on renewing for 2017, no letter about this. Oh well, wasn't a good insurer in the first place.
